Area students receive Governor's Honors Sixty-nine students representing eight Fulton County high schools have been selected for the 2003 Georgia Governor's Honors Program. The six-week summer program, held at Valdosta State University, is designed to provide intellectually gifted and artistically talented students opportunities for enriching educational experiences not usually available during the regular school year. Instruction areas include English (communicative arts), foreign languages, mathematics, science, social studies, visual arts, theater, music, dance, commercial and industrial design, technology, executive business management, and agri-science/bio-technology. The program, now in its 40th year, is open to rising 11th and 12th grade students who are first nominated by their teachers and who then compete against more than 2,400 applicants statewide. Local nominees had to pass a school and county interview and then were sent to statewide screening interviews/auditions to earn one of 675 available slots. Each student selected is provided tuition, dormitory housing, and instructional supplies through funds appropriated by the Georgia General Assembly. The 2003 program will be in session from June 15 through July 26 on the Valdosta campus.
