Spin-a-thon
fundraiser set for Friday
Members and friends
of Gold's Gym Fayette County West on Ga. Highway 74 in Peachtree City
will participate this Friday from 6 p.m. to midnight in a spin-a-thon
to benefit KidsPeace, a private, not-for-profit charity dedicated to
serving the critical behavioral and mental health needs of children,
preadolescents and teens.
Reduce
body fat to reduce cancer risk
A study released
today in the New England Journal of Medicine provides overwhelming evidence
of the link between overweight and cancer risk. Researchers estimated
that excess weight may contribute to 14 percent of cancer deaths in
men, and 20 percent in women. The study showed that the greatest danger
comes from abdominal fat, as seen in an "apple-shaped" body.
First
Steps program gets award
Southern Regional's
volunteer program First Steps recently received the Champions for Immunization
award from the Immunize Georgia's Little Guys project for its efforts
with Healthy Families of Georgia Prevent Child Abuse Georgia. The IGLG
project is a partnership of Georgia Department of Human Resources' Georgia
Immunization Project and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. This year
marks the first time that the honor has been awarded to a community
partnership.

chaplain joins Ebenezer
Chaplain Brenda
Wallace, the primary chaplain for Southern Regional Health System's
Women's Life Center, has been chosen to serve as the assistant pastor
at the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta.
SRMC
receives accreditation from National Vascular Laboratory Commission
Southern
Regional Health System's Vascular Laboratory was recently recognized
by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories
for its commitment to providing a high level of patient care and quality
testing for the diagnosis of vascular disease.
Hearing
spotlighted in May
The
month of May is designated as "Better Speech and Hearing Month"
and is recognized by hearing healthcare professionals and speech language
pathologists in the United States. In honor of speech and hearing month
the following is intended to provide some useful tips for hearing conservation
or what to do should you or someone you know suffer with hearing loss.
WIC
nutrition program asks for comments
The
Georgia Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Special Supplemental Nutrition
Program will hold its annual public comment period during the week of
May 12-16. During this period, Georgians are invited to comment on the
program and to suggest ways to improve WIC services. Comments may be
sent in writing to the Georgia WIC Branch, Suite 10.444, Two Peachtree
Street, Atlanta, Georgia 30303 or by email to rmmerrell@dhr.state.ga.us.
