A few years ago a friend, a recovering alcoholic, invited me to join him at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. He was to be honored for 25 years of sobriety, and he wanted me to come to celebrate with him. I was happy to go.

Nursing home, anyone?

When I was growing up in our family, there were certain issues that would certainly spark discussion. If one mentioned the words "nursing home," it was unspoken but understood that our family values would, to the best of our ability, not let that happen. "To the best of our ability" really meant "no way." In other words, we might discuss one another and even disagree with each other but the family was loyal to each other and that loyalty meant we would take care of each other no matter what.

Help my unbelief

The story is told by Mark in his Gospel (the third book of the New Testament) of a father who sought help for his son. The boy apparently was prone to seizures. The father had asked the followers of Jesus, specifically the disciples, to heal his son, to no avail. So the father went to Jesus with his story.
