Blog Bullies Went Too Far

Spear Road Guy's picture

I have blogged before about the “blog bullies” and their negative impact on this site. It’s okay to poke some good natured fun, but I recently saw one posting in particular, attached to a letter to the editor (8-8-06, “County, PTC reaping property tax windfall”), that was disturbing.

Blogger Idontknow’s posting placed Steve Brown in the same list as “Hitler, Castro, Mussolini and McKinney” which is childish, disrespectful and offensive. You can agree to disagree, but he went over the line on this one.

Idontknow acts as if he is jealous of Steve Brown. A lot of us write about our differences with him from time to time, but idontknow’s comments look like they stem from some kind of inner hatred. In fact, idontknow and Pandora have a difficult time coming up with relevant points for disagreement with Brown as witnessed in their posts to the same letter to the editor.

Although I didn't always agree with Brown's style, he obeyed the law and put up a good fight on behalf of a lot of citizens. He certainly didn't lie either.

I was introduced to the woman that owns the "sinking house" in the Peninsula subdivision a while back. She claims that the house is now fully restored and it would never have happened if Steve Brown hadn't come to her rescue against the builder. He helped a lot of senior citizens in town too.

You can disagree, that's fine, but idontknow's comments reveal his cruel nature. The rude exaggeration was uncalled for. When you go out of your way to compare innocent people to mass murders, war criminals, Communist dictators and people who assault law enforcement officers, you hack into the ethic moral values of our community, all become equally evil, and goodness has less significance.

Wow, after reading this vivid analysis of my six lines of text, I must admit that I had a moment where I thought to myself, "maybe I was wrong to compare our previous Mayor to such meglomaniacs."

Of course, that moment couldn't be measured with the most precise of timing devices that NASA scientists possess.

I don't believe that I ever said Steve Brown didn't do good things in Peachtree City. In fact, take some time and go back through the history of this blog website; you'll notice I have said several times he has done some good, as have all mayors and councilmembers and those who developed and continue to grow Peachtree City.

And I voted for Steve Brown to get him into office, both in the general election and the runoff. I believed he would be a fresh voice in City government. Boy, what a voice we ended up getting.

My problem with the former mayor has always been his focus on improving his false altruism, his penchant for using the local television media as his own personal dartboard, pinning whatever he believed to be "against him" to it with the vitriol of a scorned woman after considering herself wrong, assuming his opinion was the only opinion and damning all others to the bowels of developers, old guard and other magic consipracy theories.

The man, for his "good things", hurt a lot of folks you'll never get to talk to, as they have either sworn off helping out in local government or have just flat moved away because of this man.

Am I a bully? Well, if you can't put up a fight, I guess I could be called that. But, as time has shown and will continue to show, such rampant namecalling will only serve to prove the points I make.

Harold Logsdon has been called "a liar". I have been called "a bully". I think there are a group of foolish posters who take a very limited focus on things and only think of themselves, much like our previous mayor had a tendancy to do, even if they say it's in the name of "the greater good". I guess to an extent we all do; it's called an agenda.

I'd like to remind you that the people that I referenced (Hitler, Mussolini, Castro, McKinney and Stalin) all helped others. Look it up in the history books; for all their atrocities, they also "helped people" and made a positive difference for some.

I will stand by my at first comical reference; Steve Brown did some good things, some bad things, and is no longer in power. And I, for one, am happy we're not continuing the infernal, internal battling in City government leading the 6:00 news on Fox 5.

So, as always, you are welcomed to your opinion, as I am mine. I am not slandering anyone (or libelling, either), as my opinion is neither fact nor of any consequence unless you take the time to internalize it and believe it. And if you do, that's your problem, buck-o.

It’s strange reading idontknow saying about former mayor Brown, “Boy, what a voice we ended up getting.” I contend that idontknow is worse than Brown ever was in our wildest dreams. Idontknow is the bona fide continuation of the infernal, internal battling in Peachtree City. Idontknow went out of his way to compare the former mayor to mass murders, war criminals, Communist dictators and people who assault law enforcement officers. How is the voice of idontknow any better for our community?

The shrewd little dodging device that idontknow keeps using are phrases like: “The man, for his "good things", hurt a lot of folks you'll never get to talk to, as they have either sworn off helping out in local government or have just flat moved away because of this man.” Or “…assuming his opinion was the only opinion and damning all others to the bowels of developers, old guard and other magic conspiracy theories.” Idontknow can do a verbal slam dance on a person for sure, but he has a difficult time providing the facts. Are the “folks” the development authority people and their illegal loan issues? (The same loans we are now going to have to pay).

Now remember what indontknow said about Brown in the previous paragraph and consider his blog entitled “People are dumb.” Here indontknow says, “So I'm reading through some of the, uh, passionate postings by some of those who feel that their opinion matters in the Whitewater High School student issue.” He later writes, “Sorry to be babbling here, but I am quite confused by those who decide to attack another's opinion, informed or not, with such vigor for an issue that seems rather clear cut.” It certainly sounds like only indontknow’s opinion is the only one that counts, funny, that’s what he said about Brown.

Oh no, idontknow, you’re right, you’re not “slandering” anyone. Instead, you’re dragging the level of public discourse down to the altitude of the Jerry Springer Show. You vandalize our community with hate-filled, over-generalized statements.

I couldn’t help but utter an “OH MY GOD” when you wrote, “I'd like to remind you that the people that I referenced [in comparison to Brown] (Hitler, Mussolini, Castro, McKinney and Stalin) all helped others.” This has to be the most flimsy attempt at defending disrespectful and offensive remarks about an honest, law abiding person that I have ever seen. Brown had some style issues, yea, but Hilter, Stalin, etc.

Nice try with the blog on tourism in an attempt to improve your bully image. Not one slam without facts in the whole piece. Too bad you can’t keep your stuff on that side of the line.

I felt like comparing you to Osama Bin Laden in this blog, but you’re not like him at all, so I won’t do it. Doing so would be extraordinarily rude to you, and it would reduce the hideous nature of Bin Laden.

Surprisingly, I didn’t even vote for Brown in the runoff, although I now admit, I made a mistake after watching Mayor Logsdon’s performance. And yes, idontknow, Mayor Logsdon did lie about tax pledges he made to many of us in person. However, my blog has nothing to do with Mayor Logsdon.

Idontknow, I merely read your revoltingly over the top comparison and put my name in place of Brown’s name, and thought about what my family’s reaction would be, what the other kids at school would say to my kids, the people at church, and thought what a severe castigation for four years of hard work and very little pay.

Vote Republican

Logsdon. Whom, I believe, has been wrong at every turn.

Sigh. What an improvement.
