Wells signs - within 150 ft of polls?

I went to advance vote on Friday at the Fayette County election office. On my way across the parking lot to vote I came across a black pickup truck with Wells Campaign signs standing up in the back of it. My first thought was: Are there ethics regulations about campaigning withing 150 feet of a poll?
So does anyone know what happened? Was Wells sited?

As SandySue accurately reported, the black vehicle with the Wells campaign signage was spotted too close to a poll site.

We have discovered that the truck actually belongs to Tax Commissioner George Wingo. Wells was attempting to get Wingo thrown in the slammer one more time. The Wells campaign thought it would be hillarious to see Wingo receive a pistol-whipping from the Sheriff for actively supporting Wells.

It may not be true, but remember you heard it here first.

I know what happened. It is my truck. I have Linda's signs on it (and many other bumperstickers/signs). I left the truck as I was out of town on county business. It never occurred to me that there was a polling place there. While I don't agree that signs are the same as "campaigning", I try to avoid parking near polling places with it (the truck), just so that I don't have to have a dispute over the issue. The "offending signs" were covered up.

So much ado about nothing !!! Don't most people already know who they're going to vote for by the time they get to the polls. Haven't they already seen the gazillion signs everywhere for months ?! I seriously doubt that a parked truck with a candidate's name on it had any influence on anyone. There's a line there between campaigning at the polling place....and I don't think a parked vehicle with a candidate's name would be considered campaigning by a logical person.
And....I really don't care who the candidate was. I knew who I was voting for before I got there. I even had a bumper sticker on my car supporting a candidate. Ooops...does that mean I was campaigning at the polling place? Nah...I don't think so.

much of a lawdawg. The issue here is that it is unlawful to campaign within 150 ft of the entrance to a polling place, and the law makes no exception for the fact that persons may know whom they are voting for before they reach the polls.

But heck, following the law is a "pick and choose" matter with the three amigos.

So we just wasted our time making all these laws? You already knew who you were voting for?!

Submitted by Lawdawga on Sun, 08/06/2006 - 10:34pm.

Ummm...you lost me on that one, Snark. When you go to the polls, don't you know who you're voting for beforehand, or do you just pick out a sign that strikes your fancy when you get there and then decide ? I'd have to say a lot of time has been wasted on making certain laws....and too much gray area left in when they are interpreted.

If the law is not a good one then let's get it changed. If it is the law then let's hold everyone to the same standard. Sound reasonable??

Submitted by Lawdawga on Sun, 08/06/2006 - 10:42pm.

Your answer and solution are absolutely right....BUT, they're too simple for the Powers that Be to understand them, I'm afraid. If "we the people" could really do what the Constitution says we can do, then perhaps we'd have more reasonable laws with no loopholes. But, noooooo....our elected officials make those laws to suit themselves and the lobbyists and special interest groups, and I could go on and on. Too much government, too many laws, too many loopholes.

I understand a woman was turned away and told she couldn't vote because she was wearing a "Jack Smith" T-shirt and she was considered to be campaigning. She had to go and change the shirt before they would let her vote.....and yet this PU truck and sign were allowed to remain on county property!!! Wow is that a double standard!!!

Submitted by Lawdawga on Sun, 08/06/2006 - 10:11pm.

Not double standard --- just ignorance. And, ludicrous that the woman would be turned away. Somebody needs some "rules", I guess....and I really, really hate rules. Unfortunately, some people do not know how to think sensibly and act accordingly without a set of rules in front of them. Whatever happened to common sense ?!!!

You leave your truck on county property with a Wells sign in the back and when you get busted you give us that lame excuse? It's typical of your campaign tricks. The concern though is to whether you abused your position by justifying the use of county property to do what the rest of us would get fined for by the county marshall's department.

Whatever happened to eliminating the appearance of impropriety when conducting and representing the business of the constituents? Guess Peter and Linda are about as honorable as Bill Cambell. Scott Burrell's shady behaviour is starting to look acceptable when compared to these characters.

Linda, Your new campaign signs look really good with the Jack Smith signs pulled up and place at the feet of yours. Neat trend.

Harvey....as a member of the SSM do the commissioners get special treatment in regards to campaign violations?

Submitted by Harvey on Sun, 08/06/2006 - 5:49pm.

If a campaign truck was parked at Stonewall during advanced voting, that's bad stuff. The kind of crap that used to happen in Dekalb County and we would laugh down here about how crooked they were. Except up there Sidney Dorsey would have the sense to have Patrick Duffey park the truck. Here, one of our own sitting Commissioners put it there.

If Smith wins, no harm no foul. If not we need to take a strong look at where we are now.

Oh, and the "I thought nothing of it" BS. It doesn't work with our Grand Jury Peter. It's been my experience they are smarter than that here in Fayette County.

When I first started voting, In IN, back when, one street was within the boundaries.

Cops stood on both corners and would not allow in traffic on that street and would not let any vehicle in the parking lot was a sign or banner on them.

My, how times have changed! Or was who owned the vehicle?

Since when did county parking lots become free storage for our Commissioners?

From reading Peter's response, the sign was on his personal truck, which he must have driven to Fayetteville and parked. It then reads he was out of town on County Business, I assume in a County Vehicle. Conveniently campaigning, yes, but not out of the realm of being plausible....

The lady being turned away with the Jack Smith t-shirt on is understandable, in my opinion, although I don't know the law..

In regard to Peter Pfeifer's truck with the Linda Wells signs, other than size, what is the difference between the sign and bumper stickers? I always see vehicles w/political bumper stickers when I go to vote - Sonny Perdue, Kathy Cox, etc.
Also, I was at the county complex during the early voting and noticed newspapers, very prominantly placed in the county offices, with a bold ad for Jack Smith across the top of it. Is this legal?

It all seems the same to me.

The bumper stickers are pulling in and out in a short matter of time after voting. The fact is that Peter Parked his Placarded Pickup Perfectly in the Polling Parking Place Practically all PM.

You sir are appropriately named for comparing such. That's like comparing someone to going 1 mile over the limit in a school zone to someone doing 80 miles in that same school zone.

The Big 5 maybe 6 bloggers are out on their last big push to get Wells out - bait the trap and jump on it - thanks Peter for being honest - they already has your license plate and that was the next trap - your spoiled that one by being honest. Bunch of trash again.

Here's a fact - When I voted 3 weeks ago - Dunn / Maxwell / Bonner / Chapman / Wells / Smith and Lakly peppered signs all over the entrance and driveway going into to the place I voted - I asked the people who I registered with if this is OK - she did not know - She stated you could not campaign within so many feet of the voting place??

With that said - who knows the rules? I would hope Peter? But if the people and staff working the poles did not know if the entrance to the parking lot is consider part of the voting property (which I believe it is) who would know??

Thanks for your honesty Peter - you are going to take a beating but what else is new. It's only 4 or 5 bloggers who change logins constantly.

Vote wells - keep the county and the officials up front and honest. The alternative is the good ole boys network and plenty of development.

First of all there is nothing you or I can say that will change anyone's vote at this time. So this is not a last effort from the pack. The voting has started and the remaining voters will vote Tuesday with their minds having been made up a while back.

My issue is with Peter's abuse of his position which really comes as no surprise as that is what this election is all about.

With that said - who knows the rules? I would hope Peter? But if the people and staff working the poles did not know if the entrance to the parking lot is consider part of the voting property (which I believe it is) who would know??

Casey...really...Do you realize how lame your statement is and how gullible one would have to be to believe that {{{Edited}}}?

Thanks for your honesty Peter - you are going to take a beating but what else is new

Honesty???? Riiiggghhhttt. So you guys think it's proper to operate off the It's easier to ask for forgiveness than it is permission principle.

Quite honestly Casey you may think the masses are a bunch of ignorant asses but I think you are going to have yours handed back to you on Tuesday. We the voters of Fayette County can see through the FCRWW&CC's, Linda's and Peter's deceptions. Please don't attempt to talk down to us like that any more.

One final note. I guess you'll find out soon enough how many times 4 or 5 bloggers who change logins constantly get to vote. IF that is truly the case.

To answer your question? agree - I don't think I'm very bright

I do think I'm very open minded, I've learned to respect and allow people to express their opinions, even if it does not agree with mine. I was taught that in home schooling.

Never thought you were a bunch of ignorant asses - that's not my style. A pack of dogs ? pretty close, especially during the election campaigning. Allot of trash - no meat.

But hey, as long as he's being honest, maybe he'd like to tell us where he stands on the extra legal fees the bonehead Dunn has just generated again (as reported in the other paper) on the drug money issue.

Honestly, he's like an overgrown child who will throw his toys at everyone until he gets his way. Until January, it's our money he's using as toys.

And I'm thinking he never thought he'd see that letter printed in the paper since it shows us what he denied all along - which is that he wants that drug money and if the money can't go through him, he wants the Feds to stop sending it.

Herb Frady's all over the article distancing himself from this. I'd like to hear where Pfeifer, Wells and Horgan stand on it.

Jack Smith and Linda Wells have run a very ethical - no smear - mud slinging campaign - I'll give them both allot of credit to stay away from the cheap shots and the he said she said BS. Thank You both.

Grow up and listen - other people have opinions - and yes - they are not all going to agree with the dog pack.

I do not know Peter, I do know where you were going with the post -look like another cheap trick and trap. You knew who's car / truck that was - and if nothing was said you would have posted the BS later.

Here's a fact for you - I pulled into the parking lot to vote 3 weeks ago with Eric Maxwell's magnetic signs on both sides of my car - no one stop me - no one told me it was illegal - no one told me I could not vote because I had political signs on my car - So what's your point? I have nothing to gain by misleading folks. Nice spin on that one. I base my arguements here on the facts of peoples actions. You can't appreciate that because it doesn't favor your agenda. Abusing folks....yeah. Wanna play dirty...I'll play. Do I enjoy it? Not particuarly.

Deceiving liar and a campaign ho hack.

I don't care much what your mother thinks. If she doesn't like the title then she should have brought you up better. You have lied and deceived us repeatedly regarding your involvement in this campaign for weeks and you're just ticked because you get called out for it. As for the ugly admittingly nasty name I took no joy in typing that one out. But how else could I describe someone who will drink the kool-aid and continue to spew out lies defending their political candidate no matter what the truth is and the facts show. You remind me of Hillary defending Bill in the BJ case. For you it seems that the truth doesn't matter as long as the outcome benefits your Linda.

Sooooo...where do we go from here? I suggested 10 days ago or so that we all shush on this race because everyone's minds were made up. I was tired of talking about it. But when I see BS like Peter's statement not going challenged I can't sit back and say nothing. And when you come in and defend the indefensible and go after myself and the rest of the pack then don't expect me to not fight back.

I'm still thinking about your statement that you voted with the Eric signs on your car in the parking lot. Casey??? Another lie??? You were a die hard Dunn supporter. Do we need to continue with this???

You were a die hard Dunn supporter. Do we need to continue with this???

Obviously - this is a lie Get Real? I told you I voted for Eric. I posted a blog stating that he would win the election - actually won the little blog pool - I'll search for it If I need to prove my point.

the problem is when I try to search for something on this website my computer is tied up for a long time and I usually end up canceling the search.

Did not deceive you - I stated up front I was backing Wells - prior to that I had no clue who I was voting for in the Dunn / Maxwell election. I met Eric on two occasion in the last few weeks of his campaign - he won my vote and support along with the signs

Good luck tomorrow - and you should care what my mother thinks -

Yup...I was wrong on your support of Dunn. For that I do apologize. The rest I do indeed stand by.

I'm sure over the last couple of months - I owe you a few - "my bad" and "I'm sorry" - we'll call it even

Again - good luck tomorrow

You are such a pushover.

But I am still cracking up about the google map tracking of Peter's pickup and the polling places, PTC Guy's multiple personality discussion with himself and the marshall's laser dot trained on Peter's manifold. Ah, good times. I'm going to hate to see the election end. Smiling

We are going no where. One of me will always be around.

Right. Right. Sure. I am tired. Oh shut up! Grrr. Ha! Idiot. Oh shut up!...

I'm not weak. I was just wrong on a single detail. We all gotta keep the facts straight best we can. Hey....admit when one is wrong. I learned that lesson years ago when I thought I was wrong but then I discovered I was wrong.

One thing I'm not wrong on is my vote for Jack Smith.

Some of the stuff written here is truly hilarious. Guess it's a result of being exposed to too much of the Andy Griffith Show, MASH, Cheers & Seinfeld. Not to mention.......!

Using Git Real's "one single detail" defense, James Earl Ray's shooting of Martin Luther King Jr. is a perfect example of black-on-black crime.

'cept for the fact that Ray ain't black.

Git Real uses the "Casey as Dunn shill" meme to launch an all out attack on Casey, then confronted with the fact that his underlying premise is incorrect, says "yeah, but other than that...".

(At least he's not PTC Guy though...PTC Guy would put words in Casey's mouth, a la "You say you voted for Maxwell...what you meant to say was you wanted to vote for Dunn but..."

The only 'but' here is the big one you keep making of yourself.

If I had a comment to make, I would have made it for myself.

What casey is up to is obvious and I stated it too her directly. She never denied it.

BUT, we all know it is time for you to disappear again. You always do when you don't have a real answer to be proven wrong.

I did have to weigh my options here. Do the right thing and admit I was wrong on an issue or face the Rice Dude. Well that was an easy decision. One was the right thing to do and the other didn't matter.

Rice Boy.....I'm so glad you're a member of the Howard Dean party.

I did like the Git Real vs Thug odds thing. Well done.

Phool Pfeifer, campaign signs have nothing to do with campaigning.

I bet you could write 200 paragraphs explaining why they don't, couldn't you?

What kind of elected official does not know printed literature and signs have always been banned by law as campaigning?

Hmmmm. Why wasn't that truck towed? That is a pretty serious violaton of law.
