Today’s media does World War II

In a fascinating documentary about Dwight Eisenhower, entitled, “Ike: The War Years,” one particularly arresting scene shows the general (superbly played by Robert Duvall) standing before a room filled with reporters, all ravenous to snatch the least lagniappes of hard news about impending military operations.

Ike begins with bromides about how our courageous troops are pushing the Nazis back, and then he prepares to leave, when an indignant reporter stands up and blurts: “General, do you have so little faith in the news media that you cut off any further questions after feeding us this unadulterated bull?”

Ike marches back to the podium, pulls down a map, and proceeds to point out specific aspects of military plans to conquer Sicily, complete with what generals are in charge, where their troops will land, and what their missions’ goals are.

He turns to his audience and says: “You gentlemen of the press are in possession of information that could lead to the loss of thousands of lives.” He then walks out of the room amidst a standing ovation, assuming that the reporters in front of him as well as the politicians behind him were responsible and patriotic adults who put the national interest above their own career ambitions.

Once outside, he turns to his skeptical aide and says, “the press is as much a part of this war as the rest of us, Tex.”

Not any more they’re not. Thank God America’s most beloved general isn’t alive today. If he were, news of press leaks about America’s electronic surveillance of the country’s sworn enemies would probably have plunged him into his grave in nanoseconds.

Then of course there are those jubilant New York Times stories about presidential declassification of National Intelligence Estimates, done mostly to debunk perfidies spewed by one of America’s most notorious fibbers, Joe Wilson.

Examples like these could be multiplied; they amount to little more than the moral equivalent of a shark feeding frenzy. Eisenhower’s aide had good reason to be skeptical of the General’s magnanimous perspective at that time; if he were alive today, most likely good ol’ Tex would have joined that last roundup in the sky even quicker than his boss.

Which leads to an intriguing question. Suppose a number of today’s journalists somehow were transported to a World War II setting; how do you think many of them would report that global conflict?

Dec. 8, 1941: JAPANESE VISIT PEARL HARBOR! Flying a variety of multi-colored aircraft launched from aircraft carriers, the Imperial Japanese Navy indicated its extreme displeasure with American foreign policy by soaring dangerously close to our vessels of aggression. Rumors abound that some ships even experienced damage from Japanese misbehavior, which prompted an editorialist to comment, “We had it coming to us.” President Roosevelt proclaimed, “Yesterday, Dec. 7, a Day which will live in Insensitivity...”

January 1944: NYT REVEALS GERMAN ENIGMA CODE! In a startling journalistic scoop, sure to win a Pulitzer for its courageous reporter, the NYT announced from its four-star hotel in Berlin that Americans have been reading secret German military communiques for nearly the last three years. Undeterred by accusations of treason, the outspoken journalist declared that somebody’s civil liberties somewhere were probably in danger by failure to divulge such information, which he admitted now would probably cost hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of lives.

December 1944: GERMANS COUNTERATTACK; HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES PREPARES IMPEACHMENT ARTICLES! In a surprise move, a German counterattack knifed through the Ardennes Forest and Belgium, resulting in the senseless deaths of thousands of Americans and civilians, in an engagement being referred to as the Battle of the Bulge. Critics insisted that failure to anticipate this act amounted to criminal negligence, and articles of impeachment against the President were drawn up.

May 8, 1945: NAZIS SURRENDER; NO ATOMIC BOMBS FOUND! FDR lied, millions died! President Truman insisted that there were excellent reasons to fight the Nazis in spite of the fact that pre-war intelligence had mistakenly reported the existence of German plans to build The Bomb. He equated some reporters with a specific part of a certain animal’s anatomy in language too colorful to be reprinted here.

Finally, let’s consider this little gem: MILITARY PLAYS UP ROLE OF HITLER. “The U.S. military is conducting a propaganda campaign to magnify the role of the leader of the Nazis in Germany, according to internal military documents...”

Admittedly, this one really is really far-fetched, and perhaps cradling the headline with quotes divulges its roots in today’s journalism. But only a few words have been changed to make the point a bit more telling.

The real reference here is to al-Zarqawi’s role in Iraq in a piece that appeared in the Washington Post on April 10, 2006, as a straight “news story.” The words “propaganda campaign” appear three times in the first four brief paragraphs, with the “U.S. Home Audience” as one of the targets.

Yeah, that’s what the U.S. military had done throughout its existence, waged “propaganda campaigns.” Along with saving Western civilization in three world wars, protecting freedom around the world, and toppling mass murderers in totalitarian regimes. By the way, today’s media, what do you guys do?

Never mind, no need to answer that one. We know already.

You are right on with this. The press is a canker sore on our country and they need to be put in their place. Thankfully, people like you understand and write. The only thing left for America to do is revolt against the mainstream media by tuning them out and stop subscribing to their papers.

Then the real test after that - do we get our news from talk radio, the internet or Entertainment Tonight? Hard choices.

Every nations must have enemies, and superpowers must have especially monstrous foes. These foes must arise from within, of course, because the national pride of great nations precludes it from admitting it could be defeated by other "outside" forces.

These back-stabbin' internal foes have been a staple of the extremist wing of the Republican party for some time now. They (and I'm including Herr Doktor Folkertsma in that group) use these nebulous "foes" to repeatedly deny responsibility for their blunders.

There are four simple steps to their technique:

  1. Come up with a momentarily popular but reckless policy (tax cuts, Iraq invasion, Mexico wall)
  2. Deny responsibility when that policy proves disasterous (deficits, Iraq quagmire, etc)
  3. Blame disaster on others (liberals, media, homosexuals)
  4. Repeat as needed

I expect to see more of these "blame anybody but Republicans" attacks in the near future as we draw closer to the November elections.

Hey guy. I think if you truly pay attention to the forums here, the news, and talk radio you will find that support for the Republican Party is in the toilet. Yet the democrats have nothing to offer this country that doesn't tear the foundations of our constitutional government apart.

If you look at what is at stake in the November elections you will find that the differences in the House Committee memberships would be that: (1) Instead of spending lots of money on Republican pork, lots of money would be spent on Democrat pork. The question is whose pork spending do you have more faith in.

Though there is becoming less of a difference between the democrats and the Republicans for now we seem to be stuck with the lesser of the two evils. My belief is that evil is evil so which one do I vote for? The one that's going to kill me now or the one that will kill me a little later?

PTC Guy and others are right in other postings in their desire for a third party. Our problem is what third party. So Basomatic you are not worth debating with the crap you just put out. Folks ought not bite on Democrat talking points. We're not going to change your mind and your surely not going to change ours. So....know any more good eating places?

Respectfully,
A former die hard Republican still a Conservative cat...I mean Lion

I feel your pain, Git Real (and your assorted aliases), I really do. It must shake your (and your assorted aliases) core beliefs to have to look into the mirror and admit the harsh truth: Democrats are more fiscally responsible with the nation’s checkbook than Republicans.

You (and your assorted aliases),, and many other people, who once proudly stood up and proclaimed your fiscal conservatism were played for suckers by the corporate wing of the Republican party. The elitists patted you (and your assorted aliases) on your greasy head(s) when Congress passed the irresponsible tax cuts. They were able to buy entire houses with their tax savings. You (and your assorted aliases) and I got something like hundreds of dollars in tax relief, and our children got stuck with the bill.

Whether you (and your assorted aliases) choose to admit it or not, fiscal conservatives as a whole seem to be no more than thirty percent of the United States population. That’s a sizeable minority, but not enough to govern. In order to seize power, fiscal conservatives have to align yourself with the 15% or so social conservative bloc (I realize there is some overlap) to have any chance of governing.

Talk about strange bedfellows! The social conservatives goals are diametrically opposed to yours most of the time. They want to turn the federal funds firehose in the direction of churches and religious institutions. It’s not farfetched to say their vision of America is a theocracy, with social behaviors and expectations dictated by a paternal Jesus-loving government. They care not one whit about the deficit because Rapture-time is just around the corner.

You (and your assorted aliases) can talk about abandoning your Republican party all you (and your assorted aliases) like, we both know at the end of the day you (and your assorted aliases) aren’t leaving anything. The cost of a legitimate third party is too prohibitive in this day and age.

So, you (and your assorted aliases) are stuck. You (and your assorted aliases) are stuck in a party who has had 6 solid years to govern now and has shown that they have a marked inability to lead. Your party has isolated the opposition from all meaningful attempts at bipartisan governing, essentially shutting out the minority party.

Cal and crew can print all these canned editorials they want blaming the failures of Republican conservatism on this, that and the next, but I’ll be here with rebuttal after rebuttal.

Why?

Because I believe that Republican Conservatism, 2006 edition, is an absolute failure as public policy.

Have a nice day, my Lyin …errr..Lion friend, and have you (and your assorted aliases) tried that new pizza joint in the Kedron shopping center? It’s very good, but very pricey for pizza.

As bad as the Republicans have managed spending the fact of the matter is that our bloated budget comes in well under anything the democrats would come up with had they not failed to win the past 8 years of elections and were in power. Fact...every time the Republicans spend money your crew whines about all the spending cuts and that the Republicans have gutted the budgets. If it weren't for the war on terrorism and the massive spending that has been required to keep the Allah loving haters from killing the likes of you and me off, the budget would be in much better shape. The problem with the RINOs is that every time they come up with a budget they try to be nice to left and give them much of their spending increases to fund their wasteful social programs. Instead of cutting and gutting waste in the name of compromise the RINO's have given in to your side in a failed attempt to compromise and try to get along and all it has done is cost the taxpayer.

Basomastic, you should be elated. Republicans are governing like Democrats and becoming more like them daily. Your only problem is that you are impatient and cannot wait. You want it NOW. Like I tell my children.....wait a little bit and you'll get what you want. Problem is that when it's all said and done I'm not so sure that your gonna like what you get. Unless you're the one in power.

Me..the Lion & proudly presenting(my assorted aliases)
