The Sheriff , by law, is ACCOUNTABLE to the Commissioners

Yes, it is true. The Sheriff, by law, is held accountable for his actions. Please remove your emotions from this case. It's okay to acknowledge the fact that he does a good job but realize that he, just like you and me, are accountable to someone. It's a tough pill to swallow...I know...but that's life.

is absolutely not accountable to the county commissioners. Read the state constitution, it clearly states they can take no action affecting the office of, the personnel of or the salaries of the personnel of a constitutional officer. The county attorney cannot write and the commissioners cannot adopt an ordiance that supercedes the state constitution.

Once a real judge enters the picture, the picture will be clear.

This sheriff-commissioner problem looks very much like the Rush Limbaugh thing. All are above the law due to their position in society. If we allow such things to keep growing (hardly any politician in Washington anymore can be arrested for anything--Libby, Bush,Cheney McKinney, etc.)we are doomed as a workable government. People above the law, and staying in Washington too long leads to that Royal King crap again. We may need to rebel!

Both the sherriff and the commissioners are accountable to the taxpayers and we expect BOTH of them (including the commissioners) to obey the laws. Greg and the 6th Commissioner need to come clean on their illegal activities. Release the taxpayer audit reports now and save face. Admit your error in breaking the law with your poor judgement in violating the open meeting laws. Save face while you can.

As for the sherriff and his first class flight tickets how about the cozy little trips at the taxpayers expense so you guys can get away and look after the business of the county at Jekyl Island or where ever it is you go. What a freaking bunch of hypocrites. We want accountability but the commissioners hypocricy is sickening and shameless.

You are exactly right to see the Commissioners act in a way that is contrary to the citizens of Fayette County in order to pursue their own agenda.

It was interesting to see ONLY ONE citizen rise at the meeting last night to voice opposition to the policies of this board. It really appears that the "Three Muskateers" of Pfeifer, Wells and Dunn are controlling everything. Herb Frady and our newly elected Robert Horgan both said that they agree that at a minimum the expenditure should be released. It is horrid to see a small group of people impose their political agenda on the whole of Fayette County Citizens.

I suppose that we will have to wait until November to see whether their voice is really the one we want to speak for us.

Goodbye Greg.

Interesting how Cardinal, member for a month, is now blogging away suggesting a demanding standard of accountability for the Sheriff. However, the same standard in these numerous blogs is not applied to Greg, Linda and the Sixth Commissioner. Why aren't they held accountable? Why do they regularly "Stonewall" on these Sushine Law requests ? Sounds fishy. Sounds like Janet.

Indeed, you are correct, insofar as the sheriff has to give the commissioners an accounting of his books. And he does--he opens his book for audits. But that is the extent of his accountability to the commissioners. There is no law that requires the sheriff to get the commissioners' blessing before he spends money. There is no law that requires the sheriff to justify his expenses to the commissioners. If you think otherwise, please point me to the law. The LAW says the sheriff is a constitutionally elected officer who is accountable to the voters. The LAW says the commissioners can't tell the sheriff what to do. Poor commissioners, will they stomp their feet and hold their breaths til they turn blue?

You're absolutely right, the sheriff is not accountable to the commissioners, only to the state constitution and state statutes.

The three amigos have gotten away with the bullcrap because of a complicit county attorney who puts $$$ ahead of good government. He has to go too, expect that to happen once we elect new commissioners.
