74 N. of 54

PTC Guy's picture

With the widening of 74 south of 54, I was wondering if there are any actual gonna do plans for relieving traffic pressures on 74 up to 85?

Many have to come down 74 and then have to work their way over east to get home. That puts pressure on PTC Parkway and the 54/74 intersection.

Any thinking about an access north of PTC connecting to 54?

Or, for those going south of PTC a by-pass of some kind?

I have heard tons of this and that. TDK and so on.

But anything truly really moving forward to take pressure off of that single conduit, 74?

First: the idea that any kind of "bypass" or "connector" will be built from 74 to any part of PTC is absurd; check a property map. There is no viable way to create such a wasteful and destructive project. Do you honestly believe that any level of gov't, from PTC up to the State of Georgia will even begin to mention the term "eminent domain" in the post- Kelo Supreme Court decision world?

Second: if anything, the commute on 74 north will worsen and never improve. Currently there are three lights between 54 and Tyrone. This number will increase soon to four and inevitibly, within the next 5-10 years, to at least six or seven. In the "government as custodian" condition of American politics, we would rather have them create gridlock-causing traffic lights rather than push efforts to educate drivers on the proper way to negotiate intersections (yes, it is mostly common sense and courtesy) or heavily punish those who fail to obey existing traffic laws, especially on failure to yield right of way which is the most common cause of intersection accidents.

Want to see 74's future? Start in Fayetteville at 7am and drive to Forest Park on a weekday morning. And pay attention to all the commerical/retail development and blight- if Tyrone and Fairburn have their way (and to a lesser extent, even PTC), Riverdale will be the development model for 74 between 54 and I-85.

So the government will waste our money on traffic lights; we'll waste more and more time at needless traffic jams at intersections; and people will continue to seek the "easy way out." It doesn't exist.

We don't know but something will happen. Better or worse.

Becoming Fayetteville or Riverdale is exactly why a by-pass or two is needed. To keep that long corridor from happening.

I saw it happen in another state. From one highway through the country to one highway as a complete sardine can.

They refused to do by-passes as well.

Another state put in a '74,' but with corridors and a by-pass. Yes, there was still construction. But it was sane and drivable.

I agree if it goes the way you project it will be an insanity of lights and wasted time and gas.

Time will tell. No doubt on that score!

I live off of the Parkway, Spyglass Hill area and I avoid 74/54, when I can. I've cut over on Dogwood to 54 via one road whose name escapes me, and that's not a bad bypass, if you know the way.

The real concern in my book comes from the added pressure from Coweta Subdivisions and the effect on hwy 74. I think the finishing of the 54 West will be a real relief to the area. And the planned 74 S widening to Crosstown will also provide needed relief. But if Coweta keeps growing, more help will be needed.

I know what you mean on 75/54. Aberdeen Parkway saves me a bunch of time getting home.

I agree on the Coweta issues. Making that road easier is going to promote development and traffic.

Also, we stopped going to Newnan because of the construction. When complete we will go again. As will many others who did the same thing.

Add that construction on 74 north of 54 is not stopping. That will increase pressures, especially when Target opens.

I might be wrong, but I suspect some kind of by-pass is going to be needed soon.

You have Tyrone Rd and Peachtree Pkwy, where else would you want a "bypass"?
