Disappointment on the left! Disappointment on the right!

So here we are almost a year into the new administration's term. And what do we have to celebrate on the left?

Well, we passed the Lilly Ledbetter Act which protects women from discrimination at work in terms of pay and work rules. We saw protections for credit card users pass, eliminating unreasonable interest rate hikes. We saw torture Finally taken off of the table as something our government would do to captured persons in our care. And we saw several other pieces of legislation pass which were so innocuous you would have to research them on the internet to even know what they were.

But what of our major issues?

NO end to troop deployments in The Middle East.

NO immediate closing of GITMO (but it's on the horizon).

No reversal of rising unemployment rates.

And NO access to basic health care for each and every American.

Not much to strike up the band and have a parade about.

Let's walk across to the right side of politics.

Blocked health care reform so far..... just what large health insurance and pharmaceutical companies wanted.

No likely passage of Cap in Trade, allowing pollution levels to continue at current levels for the foreseeable future, but which allow corporations to not have to invest money in energy reduction measures.

A monumental victory in Massachusetts which appears even more monumental if you ignore the monumental loss in New York's 23d Congressional District.

And a blockage of the nominee who was to head up the TSA; a nominee who was unanimously approved by democrats out of committee (Joe Lieberman said he brought "nearly three decades of experience in public safety, homeland security, and intelligence, carried out at all levels of government and, indeed, in academia.")

And today, the conservative-leaning Supreme Court landed a doozy for the err.... ummm.... people?

The Supreme Court just voted to allow large businesses to contribute unlimited amounts of money to political campaigns.ALL 5 JUSTICES APPOINTED BY REPUBLICANS VOTED FOR THIS!

So This is what "strict constructionist judges" do? Drown out our meager campaign contributions with the wheel barrows of corporate campaign cash?

Look who applauded this opinion and who derided it.

I especially like The Republican Senate minority leader's take on this reversal of years and years of precedent which protected an individual's ability to compete in the financing of campaigns.

"With today's monumental decision, the Supreme Court took an important step in the direction of restoring the First Amendment rights of these groups by ruling that the Constitution protects their right to express themselves about political candidates and issues up until Election Day." — Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.

You see that folks? Mitch McConnell has insured Bank of America, Citibank, AIG, CIGNA, United Healthcare, Phizer, Johnson and Johnson, and many other mega companies that they will be protected by him and his fellow conservatives who happen to sit on the bench.

Real quick my fellow beloved bloggers: Look in your wallets. Shake out the change in the pockets of those jeans on the floor or in the hamper. Now go on line and quickly look at your bank balances. Check your net worth on Quicken.

Now compare the numbers you just scanned to these:

Pharmaceutical company revenue in millions for the first half of 2009

Now, this is Wikepedia, but I suspect the numbers are fairly accurate. And keep in mind this is NOT net worth; this is just their profits for the first half of 2009; profits made, in large part, by holding the cost of their product to us as high as possible.

So, let's wrap our hands around this: The party in the minority that feels it is a party of the people has:

1) Blocked insurance reform to date ensuring that the status quot is maintained...just like big pharma and big insurance companies wanted.

2)Blocked measures to reduce energy consumption of large corporations....just like large corporations wanted.

3) Blocked the placement of leadership in the TSA because he just might possibly support unions.... just like anyone with explosive underwear would want.

and

4) Guaranteed, through their "strict constructionist" and "*conservative" supreme court justices, that poor little Johnson and Johnson will be able to donate as much money as they possibly can to defeat healthcare reform, pre-existing condition legislation, and/or cost controls like allowing importation of drugs at each and every opportunity.

Really makes you wonder who is actually on the side of the individual. It makes you wonder who will send people to Washington and who those folks will be beholden to. I can't wait to hear and read the reaction by those among us who feel we, as individuals, should be represented in Washington, and not special interest and big business.

Cheers,

Hack

The supreme court decision has nothing to do with corporations being able to donate unlimited amounts of money to campaigns and candidates. Thats not even what McCain-Feingold was really about. The decision just overturned a law preventing corporations to pay for TV ads withing 2-3 months of an election, depending upon which type of election it was. They could already do this anyway, its just that now they can do it a little closer to the election. So the change here is really pretty small. You complained that this upsets many precedents, but i would argue older precedents support this decision. Corporations have had the same rights as individuals for a long time in this country. The right to own property, keep arms, sue and be sued, all of it. And that was a decision established by the supreme court as well. This is just a furtherance of that policy, the right to free speech by a corporation which is really already excersied daily.
For example, Newspapers and TV news organizations are private corporations and they are free to run whatever story they want (good or bad) about a candidate right up until election day. Im sure we can all agree that media outlets , whatever the type, are totally biased, so whats the difference, really?

“3) Blocked the placement of leadership in the TSA because he just might possibly support unions....“

He inappropriately accessed federal databases to obtain information about his estranged wife's new boyfriend and lied about it to Congress and the White House.

And as for blaming the Republican Party for Global Warming; please tell me again how Gore ‘mined’ all that money.

As far back as 2007, the NYT headlines read”Companies Shift More Donations To Democrats”

Please show me your posts criticizing that.

How about, “In 2010, Democrats will once again call upon their most ardent contributors, big labor- who donated a whopping 450 billion dollars to Democrats in the 2008 election cycle, to propel them to victory. With some multinational unions containing over two million members, the influence exerted by unions is comparable only to that of corporations.”

“With 87% of all union donations going to Democratic candidates, Republicans are at a disadvantage in states that do not allow corporations to directly donate to campaigns.”

I’m sorry Kevin, I didn’t hear you. What were you saying?

When the Mid-Terms come around I’ll be looking for your dissatisfaction with large corporate donations to both parties.

If politics makes you sick, just skip down to the *******

Joe. Sorry to compare you to moldy food. That was not fair or accurate. You're more like fog. Not much substance, but it blocks one's view quite well. Luckily I have the internets and it serves as a good fog light. Republicans exist to block health care. And polls will tell many different things.

If you ask:

"Do you want your taxes to increase to cover more people with health care?" Folks will not support it.

If you ask:

"Should companies exclude working Americans with pre-existing conditions from health care policy coverage," or "Should covered persons be denied coverage at the discretion of the insurance company even if they pay their premiums," or "Should health care costs inflate at twice the rate of inflation," You sill get poll results supporting key aspects of the health care bill which itself is in jeopardy.

Bad PTC. You make great points. But if we consult polls on healthcare, consult them on global warming as well. Most think it's a problem. The question is what to do about it.

Mike K, I believe that all 100 senators are paid for the same reason: To work for the American people. One side uniformly opposed any real health care reform. One side gave demonstrable mis-information on death panels and attacks on VA and medicare benefits. That was all done to block legislation, right or wrong.

Now for the real important subject today*********************

My sister in law gave birth to twins last weekend, but has slipped into a coma due to postpartum complications.

Her name is Anna. She is a fighter. I believe in the power of prayer.

Please, please pray for Anna and that God's will be done in her life. She is the mother of the nieces we raised for a time.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers in advance. I won't be available for a while, but I will immediately let you know of any changes.

Cheers, and God Bless

The Republican party did not block health care reform. After all, the libs had control of both houses and a filibuster proof majority in the Senate. They could have had it passed months ago if they had a bill that was worth something more than the 2000 pages that it was written on.

The Democrat party "screwed the pooch."

They tried to rush though a pathetic piece of legislation by passing bribes out to special interest groups, just so Obama could claim a hollow victory at the expense of our freedom and tax dollars for generations to come. They Democrat party blocked any discussion of any Republican ideas and shut out the American people with their backroom bribes to Nebraska, Louisiana, and Labor Unions.

Folks. Just thought you would enjoy Exhibit A in the height of disingenuous statements.

Let's just take the Senate. The Senate has 100 senators that should be working for the American people. Apparently some think there are only 58 senators plus two independents who are paid to actually work. Apparently, some think that 40 senators were just being paid to sit on their butts and taunt the 60 actual workers. Interesting perspective.

Well, what do the 41 spectators in the Senate actually think?

GOP Memo: "Blocking Dems’ Health Care Reform Proposal Is Good Politics"

A Maryland lawmaker wants to block Congress' health care reform bill.

"Make me the 41st vote and I will block health care reform"

There is a reason that I try my best not to talk to you. It's the same reason I don't eat rotted, slimy, moldy food that sits in the back of refrigerators. Nothing good is in it....nothing good can possibly come from it.... and you know at a glance that there is nothing of nutritional value in it.

with trying to block a bill that was bad for America and MOST Americans DID NOT WANT..

DO you think just because the Dems tried to jam it down out throats we should have said shove it harder?

You know the real answer here.. The DEMS DID NOT NEED ONE Republican to get this passed.. They had the control.. They just wanted political cover so when America saw what they were really getting for their 4 years of pre-taxes and fees w/o benefits, then they would have revolted... and the dems knew it too.

Kevin you are smarter then this.. That is why I like debating you.

Now we can start over and DO THIS right..

Technically speaking, Joe is correct-Repubs did not block health reform. Given the chance, however, it is my belief that they would have given blockage the old 'college try'. Truth is, both sides of Congress realize that while the measure is in its current state, no one in Congress is willing to risk further ire of the American people (especially those up for reelection.

My guess is that a little further down the road both sides will put their collective heads together and find something that is more acceptable to the American public. After all, their political lives are at stake.

You and I are just going to have to wait and see.
