Cal Beverly - What happened to Free Speech?

Cal, what happened, the last Free Speech that ran in the paper was on November 4th, 09. Did you just decide that it wouldn't run anymore? I know people have things to say so put it back and lets have at it.

Serious question deserves serious answer: It's the economy ... uh ... folks.

Simply put, I don't have room to print it. (Remember — I said "print.")

Advertising pays the freight for every free printed page you hold in your hand. If a paper gets smaller, it's not because we ran out of news. Instead, we print the amount of pages warranted by the ads contained therein.

Based on our current advertising volume, I have enough ad pages to pay for quality news (including sports and community) coverage, some editorial (opinion) columns, and letters from readers who sign their names. Those are the priorities.

But consider: This very electronic forum is Free Speech. All it lacks is a printed page and my editing.

When the advertising returns to former levels, then the "printed" Free Speech will also return.

In the meantime, feel free to use this site to launch your Free Speech comments.

There are not many forums for unedited expression. Your 'standards' are adhered to by most posters.

Many have noticed the absence of the Free Speech section; however, Cal has done a great job allowing the public to speak, better than any other newspaper I have seen.

I would like to see more Pro and Con side-by-side positions on specific issues affecting us locally. For example, Jack Smith defending the W. Fayetteville Bypass vs. someone opposed to it. Have it head-to-head and let the people think and decide.

Free Speech has gotten completely silly and irrelevant. A pro/con column would be a great idea. Maybe select topics for the next 3 or 4 weeks and Cal can choose the best pro and con column from all contributors.

I do think contributors should sign their real name and repeaters should be limited to twice a year - even you big fella.
