Steve Brown: Election in Peachtree City

Steve Brown's picture

It has been a couple of interesting months of campaigning by the various candidates.

For the most part, the candidates have been issues oriented.

I was disappointed with Cyndi Plunkett telling a few campaign lies and distorting her record.

At least the other incumbent, Steve Boone, kept things above board. He did say his past actions were in the best interest of the city, an opinion. I strongly disagree with his opinion.

It looks like the voter turnout is going to be pretty low. So, the question is , "Who would a low turnout favor?"

In the mayor's race, I cannot figure out who gets the edge from low turnout. I come up with good arguments both ways.

There was a little discussion on certain candidates backing other candidates. All denied they were backing others (a little lying going on there).

In truth, it may have been a good idea in this particular election to have a slate of candidates due to the field being so obscure.

Quite a few people are going around saying, "Don't vote the Dar ticket!" This is in reference to the campaign signs Dar Thompson allows outside his gym on Hwy. 74. The theory is if Dar likes them, they must be up to something. I went out to see who he was posting and said, "well, well, well."

1. Who does a low turnout favor?

2. Who are the voters coming to the polls? Land plan advocates or Logsdon good old boy cronies?

3. Does the SPLOST go up or down this year?

FAIR AND BALANCED - YOU DECIDE

Thank you Steve Brown in these times of trouble for your experience and insight. I can only imagine how much we would benefit from your leadership now in City Hall. Good luck to all who take office in January and thank you to all candidates for making the effort.

Fondly,

Mrs. Fran Sheldon

I'll tell you who---the people who actually voted because those that took the time and interest to do so have that much more power in their individual vote.

Having said that, I think Cyndi wins the mayoral race with a small or large turnout.

Best of luck to all and thanks to all the candidates for being willing to get in the game and make a difference instead of sitting on the sidelines complaining. You are to be commended.

I'm thinking all Chicks win today...might take a run off to do it though.

People are really willing to vote for Cyndi? Why?

1. I think a low turnout favors Cynthia Plunkett a lot. She is being backed by the same people of DirectPAC and looking at her campaign donors looks like a who's who of what around these here parts is called "the establishment." These people DO vote. The "Women of Fayette County" or whatever also are going to show up. Rowland will probably pull enough votes to force a runoff between Plunkett-Haddix, but if anyone wins outright today, it's Plunkett.

The whiners and anti-everything, life-sucks-and_i-hate-it-here crowd doesn't always show up and put their ballots where their whiny mouths are.

2. SPLOST? It goes down in defeat. The BOE SPLOST really poisoned the waters, not that this SPLOST itself was a good idea in any event. People have had enough of ridiculous government spending for a while. Even though some of the opponents of SPLOST are going to sit back, not vote and hope it doesn't pass, enough will turn out to defeat it.

I was there at 8:30. I would have thought that would be a rush hour but other than the volunteers and staff I only saw two people and one in the parking lot.
