Political Mud Slinging against Fleisch and Haddix at Holy Trinity, WWJD?

Steve Brown's picture

Barb Curasi is flooding the good folks at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with political propaganda and total lies.

There never was a plot to replace the city manager. In fact, I hired Bernie McMullen and like the guy. He is doing a fine job.

Picking on Fleisch, a fellow parishioner, through the church directory is sad. Picking on a Haddix because he has a GED is not very Christ-like either. Who cares if he got a GED instead of a regular diploma?

For the record, Barb knows absolutely nothing about my education or work experience.

Barb's "hatch job for Jesus" is below (the factual content is about 2%):

"Well the whole thing is very sad since Vanessa Fleisch is a CHRPer. But so are Bernie and Cathy and they were really upset when they found out what was going on. Vanessa won't even look Bernie in the eye and Bernie and Cathy thought they were friends. She was their realtor for crying out loud! They had been looking for a house on the lake 4 years ago when Cathy was diagnosed with lung cancer. So they decided to just stay where they are and add on instead. Cathy picked Vanessa because she was a CHRP sister. But anyway, Don Haddix can't stand Bernie and he is cahoots with Steve Brown, and somehow Vanessa has gotten involved with this. There is a third guy, Eric Imker running to fill out the term vacated by Haddix when he started his mayoral campaign. Erik just can't stand Bernie, for what reason, we don't know. But in a perfect storm, Haddix, Vanessa and Eric get elected and they then have a majority on the city council. Bernie is out and Steve Brown is in! As I stated, he is not qualified!! The whole thing scares me to death. If this comes to pass, I will move. Paige is graduating and we don't have to stay in PTC. A lot of the problems we have in this town now are because of what Steve Brown did as mayor. God help us if he becomes the city manager. And God help us if Don Haddix becomes the major. He didn't even get a traditional high school diploma. He has a GED and no college and Steve Brown studied journalism (I'm not sure if he got his degree, I do know he has never worked in journalism He's mostly been office managers for dentists). Cyndi at least has a law degree. And Vanessa accuses her opponent, Les Dyer of being a developer because his wife is a realtor. How does that work when Vanessa, herself, is a realtor? That sounds like a tactic right out of the "Steve Brown Political Handbook". She also told one of my friends that she thought it was unethical for Bernie and the Mayor to buy fixer uppers together to rent out, like there was some political influence going on there. She even said there was talk that they had used city funds for this purpose. You know Bernie - he wouldn't do anything like that! And they mayor is running for state office. If he had that kind of bombshell in his closet, would he run for state office, for crying out loud! Again, this has Steve Brown written all over it. The bottom line is Vanessa has gotten herself mixed up with a bad bunch. We have to make sure that Steve doesn't get back in city hall. And the only way to make absolutely sure it doesn't happen is not to vote for Don Haddix or Vanessa. And as I said, I don't usually get this outspoken about this stuff, but this is too important to bury my head in the sand and let the chips fall where they may." - Barb Curasi

In my humble opinion, the truly educated never stop learning. Whether worldly experiences or college professors are your teachers, your open mind and desire and willingness to learn are far superior to the lambskins on your wall. I have four college degrees, which I obtained in order to improve my employment situations, and I think the main thing I learned through earning them was discipline (not to undermine the degrees; I'm also proud of my own hard work and the content I learned). Thankfully, there are all kinds of educational institutions, formal and informal, in which we, as Americans, can participate. Because of the geography in which I find myself (chuckle), I cannot vote for or against Mr. Haddix. I admire his decision not to overly defend himself on this issue; it seems he is sufficiently educated to address the political questions posed to him and sufficiently disciplined to refrain from needlessly engaging with the nitpickers.
An aside: Whether a university/college is liberal or otherwise should not dissuade someone from becoming an independent thinker. Your education is up to you and whatever YOU make of it.

My theory on how this came about:
Barb and the McMullens are personal friends. They all go out to dinner and tie one on. Bernie goes on a rant about how Haddix and Imker hate him. Barb goes home. Drinks another bottle of wine and writes a letter to the editor. A day later that letter is declined. Barb gets pissed. Drinks two more bottles and sends the letter to her church group.

If 'the barb' wanted her message to go to only a few friends why did she try to send it as a letter to the editor in TheCitizen? She wanted to smear candidates in order to assist those she is favoring in the oncoming vote--nothing else. If rumors are going around as she indicates, and there is nothing to back them up, and you still pass them on, you are nothing but a sorry excuse for a human being to besmirch anyone's name with no validation for your remarks. Beantown, some of your remarks would be funny if they were not so foolish. Why should Steve Brown not defend himself when he is mentioned in the rumors being spread? And, yes, anyone would be pleased to see nice things written about them. Wouldn't you? And would you not speak up otherwise? It seems Barb's little dirty trick backfired on her. Maybe she will decide it is better to locate when "Paige" graduates and leave behind all the turmoil she has created. If so, I would like to know where she relocates as I would not want to be her neighbor---anyone who spews such nastiness would probably continue to do so where ever she may be.

It is incredible how you are so unprofessional & self-serving that you would create such hysteria when you say you don’t want the job as city manager.

To set the record straight for all reading the paper, the email “virus” is an exaggeration by Mr. Brown. A personal email was sent discussing an opinion of Brown to a handful of friends. NOT a mass mailing! One person who received this email must have forwarded it to Brown directly or through someone else they knew. There was no church involvement and is suggested just to stir more gossip and speculation.

Upon receiving this email Brown replied to all of those on the original email. Frankly, it was pathetic. Then he took a private discussion to the public forum... for political reasons. If his plan was not to do what was suggested in this personal opinion email why would he care so much?

If Brown heard people were talking about him in a positive light or about an accomplishment & they expressed it was in the best interest to get him back into PTC politics - he would have been thrilled.

Instead, freedom of speech & opinion not favoring him - he chose dirty politics. Anyone who writes a personal email does so with the intent that it is private NOT to be posted on a public blog where it is then analyzed and criticized. This was done by someone who actually held position as mayor? What a joke. Some think, and are entitled to their opinion, that you are not a positive choice to represent our community.

Times are changing and it is time to get people into office that are mature and respectable members of our community. Actions speak louder than words. Anyone running for office right now should be aware that as a society most citizens are fed up with self-serving brat pack good old boy networking. This used to be a great, safe, family-focused place to live. In order to restore what we all knew PTC to be we need a fresh mind willing to put the people who live here first.

and got caught at it!

Mrs. Curasi got “BAGGED” and now she has no rock to hide under.

I guess we won’t be seeing her face at Church or the Avenue any time soon.

Doesn’t the church teach us NOT TO LIE!

“A personal email was sent discussing an opinion of Brown to a handful of friends.”

“To set the record straight for all reading the paper, the email “virus” is an exaggeration by Mr. Brown.”

To set the record straight I’ll refer you to the “Letter to the Editor” that you mistakenly lifted the word “VIRUS” from. See, PTC plot to install former mayor as city manager? No way, they say

So much for the “personal email” defense. “BAGGED” AGAIN!

This was by no means a “personal email” or a “discussion”. This was the willful and deliberate spreading of an OUT-RIGHT-LIE that was sent via the unauthorized use of a private mailing list on the part of some insecure, self-centered GOSSIP QUEEN!

“Anyone who writes a personal email does so with the intent that it is private NOT to be posted on a public blog where it is then analyzed and criticized.”

And anyone with half a brain should have known that such a blatant attempt to spread lies and mistruths, such as these, was going to be exposed as the lying GOSSIP QUEEN she is.

As per the email, “We have to make sure that Steve doesn't get back in city hall.”

How about WE have to make sure that these lies get exposed for what they are and expose those who misused the confidence of the members of a church group.

How about Mrs. Curasi publically apologizing to the members of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, specifically the members of CHRP, who have now been stigmatized by her careless and now public remarks?

” There is a third guy, Eric Imker running to fill out the term vacated by Haddix when he started his mayoral campaign. Erik just can't stand Bernie, for what reason, we don't know.”

It’s apparent from her statement that Mrs. Curasi has NO IDEA who Mr. Imker is. How on Gods green earth could she possibly have any idea of his intensions towards the current city manager?

”If this comes to pass, I will move. Paige is graduating and we don't have to stay in PTC.”

Don’t let the door hit you in the a$$! Move anyway, regardless of the outcome.

PTC, no place, needs the likes of a GOSSIP QUEEN like Mrs. Curasi!

If you are privy to the fact that Mrs. Curasi will be lectoring on Dec. 19th, more than likely you or someone in your household has received the lector's schedule. You should know that lectoring is different to lecturing...and that when a person is a lector he/she is proclaiming the Word of God - something not to be taken lightly. To announce that Mrs. Curasi will be preaching is not at all funny. I do not know anything about this woman, nor do I care - but I do care that the ministry of the proclamation of the Word of God - the Good News is not the butt of any jokes or tongue-in-cheek conversation. If anyone wishes to come to hear the Word of God on December 19th, more power to them. If anyone comes to see Mrs. Curasi, then shame on you PTCGOIL.

Submitted by PTCGOIL on Fri, 10/30/2009 - 4:20pm.

I think you might have a comprehension problem. Now, let's read this together, shall we?

"she will be the lector on Sat. Dec. 19th at 4PM"

Now, gelato, where in that statement of mine did I state that she will be lecturing (your word, not mine). The "Mrs. Curasi will be preaching is not at all funny" (again, YOUR words, not mine) must be from another post (mostly in your grey matter somewhere, I presume) that does not exist anywhere that I know of.

As for the "Word of God" (again, your words) and coming to see Mrs. Curasi (you might refer to the web site www.holytrinityptc.org), as it is clearly stated on their web site who is LECTORING. Sorry, nothing as nefarious as you are insinuating that I am "privy" to (you words, not mine). Are Catholics the only ones allowed to view the above web site?

If you're gonna place "shame" somewhere, I suggest you look elsewhere.

Might be some soul searching going on at Mass this week, me thinks. In any event, I'll keep praying for you and your friends.

I'll be ding-danged!!!!

She must have a learning disablity. Maybe she can't retain or comprehend what she reads to her fellow church goers. Especially the part about TREAT OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE THEM TREAT YOU.

That must be her excuse as for not being responsible for the nasty email in which she wrote at the top of for "mass ditribution. Send it to all."
I guess she also is not responsible for sending a letter to the editor either. Silly me, I thought those were to be read by all.

Submitted by beantown on Fri, 10/30/2009 - 1:04pm.

Is this a playroom for children? You are very pathetic. Look how you accuse and make such distinct comments as if you truly know it all. I did not "lift" anything from a letter to an editor... so I'm not "bagged" as you say.

Wow, what a sad & boring life you must lead. Glad not to know you. A person who gets involved to such a level of angst must be a VERY weak, unimportant, disheveled underachiever. Are you sure you covered all the points in my post? Don't bother replying if you missed one. I don't give one thought to your opinion.

Judging from your two rebuttal posts, I can't help but conclude that you yourself are none other then the infamous Mrs.Curasi. you respond to what you call accusations as if they were directed at you, a little slip of the tongue eh?(or fingers as it were) Get caught spreading rumors and then try to justify it by accusing people of the same thing you got caught doing. Don't take this reply as a defense of little Stevie, I think he's got a lot of clown in him too. I am not her. But "conclude" as you will. I stated my opinion on that issue earlier - and that I see now was a complete waste of my time. Who gives a crap about that issue or any other issue talked about on this blog is my opinion now. You can all hash it out and call each other names and when new people come on the blog just insult and demean like you are king of the hill. There is no grown up discussion about an issue. It seems to be a lot of the same people and if you read back on older posts - they reply with the same nasty authoritarian view like they know it all. What is the point of a blog? Really, a complete waste of my time.

“Is this a playroom for children? You are very pathetic.”, “what a sad & boring”, “weak, unimportant, disheveled underachiever”

Beantown, did I miss any?

And to your point beantown; yes I do take things apart and analyze every single part looking for a point of failure and then use it to my advantage. It's called debate tactics. You should learn how to use it to your advantage.

As for Kim, well it seems that if she is elected we will be seeing massive tax increases across the board.

Education or not, Don Haddix has represented the citizens of PTC very well and is among the minority of politicians, locally or nationally who are willing to answer questions and explain their position with honesty and integrity.

The blogger who says that Haddix does not represent the majority of PTC citizens because of his lack of education (whether that's true or not) is certainly showing his ignorance. As an uneducated (well, I do have a HS diploma and lots of college, but no degree) long time PTC resident and community leader, I personally take offense at the theory that one needs a formal education to be successful or worthwhile. Some of the dumbest people I have ever known have Master's degrees and some of the smartest I've known didn't even make it through HS. It all depends on the individual, and I don't need for my leaders to have credentials and awards when I have the experience that they have consistently brought to the table to make my decision by.

Don Haddix has thus far done a good job representing my desires for PTC and I have no doubt that he will continue to do so when he is elected mayor.

But then, what do I know anyway? No degree, but a long-standing six figure executive in a local company also with leadership positions in the Fayette County Chamber, Kiwanis and other civic organizations, Boy Scouts, elementary and high school parent organizations, youth sports' coach and church. Oh, and a published writer to boot. Just bragging, but it certainly doesn't take a formal education to make positive contributions to society.

I'm voting Haddix.

"Steve Brown studied journalism (I'm not sure if he got his degree" What is that? If you are going to write a letter like this, at least know your facts.

How does the church feel about this? It seems to me like this was gross misuse of their email list. The company I work for would be very upset if an employee used the customer database for something like this.

I am amazed at the lengths people will go to just to smear someone's good name. I was a little confused about who to vote for but now I know for sure that it will be Vanessa Fleisch and Don Haddix for mayor and post 4. I am appalled that Bernie would allow himself to be dragged into this. Maybe setting up Chief Murray wasn't good enough for him. So Don had a GED? So did Dan Lakly. I think if you did your research you would find many others in politics only have a GED, especially locally. As for the lady who wrote the mean spirited hateful letter, where did she get her degree? From the way that was written, I would be ashamed to tell anyone where I got my degree from

You should aspire to national politics--they would welcome you with open arms. To use your church bulletin is truly reprehensible. As to education, or lack thereof--a degree does not always measure intelligence or common sense. I do believe you mentioned your degree was in journalism--if so perhaps you should ask for a refund if your letter was any indication of your writing ability--or were you aiming for friendly and folksy? I think in journalism there are several questions you always ask yourself and then answer in your story. I believe they are who, what, where, why, when and possibly one other that slips my mind at the moment. Regarding the allegations you made, you have answered none of those. Now as regards you and your letter I think we know the answer to most of those questions---who, a candidate or candidates who wants to smear the opposition, what--an accomplice willing to do their dirty work, where--in your church bulletin of all places and wherever else you have spread these rumors, why--because it is close to voting day and you and those your represent hope to lay a smoke screen to cast doubts on candidates who may beat the pants off your candidates. Shame on you--you sure will have lots to share in that confessional won't you?

The problem is Mr. Haddix is wishing to represent us as a community. The GED and lack of college education (if this is the case - since he refuses to answer simple, direct questions we cannot be sure) sets him apart from the community. 96% of us have High School diplomas, 46% College degrees, and 15% Graduate or professional degrees.

He is NOT representative of us and he should not be elected to represent us. I am afraid his lack of education and resulting bitterness is what has made him feel that no civility is necessary in local politics. He seems angry, bitter and unkind. Top that with undeducated and I feel very strongly that we should not want him to be the face and voice of Peachtree City.

Submitted by Bonkers on Thu, 10/29/2009 - 6:21am.

Nobody could possibly mean this without their fingers crossed and their tongue in their cheek!

To imply that a group of people similar to people in Peachtree City would demand that a public servant running for office have sufficient certificates of education, to suit the person complaining--I suppose--
so as to be qualified is utterly stupid!

Granted some businesses do require not only a certain college degree and that it be from a list of schools approved by them, however they are simply playing the "odds" thinking that people with a degree are usually more successful at tasks assigned than those who may actually be more qualified to perform the task with no degree.

Everyone can't be hired with the thought in mind that all of them must be capable of being promoted to Chief Executive Officer. Even that philosophy is quite flawed due to some college degrees, and so-called degrees being useless.

What it is is a cabal of snobs who want everyone to do what they did.

Maybe we need to rescind Abe Lincoln's Presidency---he never went to much school at all. Harry Truman couldn't even speak well, plain and clear, but not well as is now required.

Some even get degrees from exalted Universities by having their Daddy build a Library wing and by hiring a dozen tutors to obtain "Cs."

To attack him based on not knowing his educational level and saying "he's not like us" is just asinine and not relevant whatsoever.

"If you don't want the voters to look at your pro-developer voting record that has damaged the city (Plunkett), or your inexperience and lack of previous involvement (Rowland), start a smoke screen about Haddix' education."

Tacky. Very tacky. And totally irrelevant.

Plunkett doesn't want us to remember how she voted AGAINST the citizens of PTC every chance she got.

At first I was undecided between Haddix and Rowland, but since the big box/illegal tennis center crowd is against Haddix he must be good for us.

Vote for plunk if you want to be the next river-crimedale.

He would be the mouth because he answers questions, the eyes because he is watching out for the city, the ears because he listens to the citizens, and the nose because he can smell the dirty laundry a mile away. Let's compare him to his competition- shall we?

Cyndi- can't be the mouth because she answers nothing.Although she does like to use her mouth to talk out of both sides of it. She can't be the ears because she does not listen to the people, she only listens to her campaign consultant that advises her to not answer anything. She is obviously not the brains behind the operation because she needs the campaign advisor to make those hard decisions for her about answering questions. Gee the degree helps alot here don't you think?

She can't be the eyes because her future vision for the city does not match up with what the constituents see as the future of PTC.

Obviously her nose doesn't work anymore so she can't be up for that part of the "face of PTC" because she has constitently waded into this cesspool that she helped create. Maybe she likes the smell of crap.
I'll let you decide since you are so educated and have so many degrees that the rest of PTCers have or don't have.

It would appear to those of us that do have one or more of those "graduate and/or professional degrees" that it is you RD Clark that sounds angry, bitter ,unkind and in great need of higher education.

I would submit that it is YOU that is NOT representative of us, the well educated, and YOU should not be allowed to annoy us any further.

I look forward to the day after Mr. Haddix is elected Mayor of PTC and you disappear back under the rock from which you crawled.

how did you let him already get elected to PTC Council? Hasn't he represented the people of PTC already? I think your argument, if you can call it that, is pretty much a mute point. How come you only joined this forum in the last couple of days? Where have you been? Were you locked in some think tank trying to figure out how to ruin your opponent? How about we let the mayoral candidates' voting records and campaign disclosures speak for themselves. I THINK that about does it for you. Goodbye!!!!!!!!!

Submitted by RD Clark on Wed, 10/28/2009 - 10:56am.

I have only been trying to get public disclosure about a fairly innocuous topic - Education. I have not even said who it is that I DO support. But I will not support Don Haddix because he has no formal education (even high school? - Again, we do not know because he will not say), and WORSE - he is ashamed of it and that shame has made him bitter and hungry for power.
As for where have I been and why did I just join this forum? I am just an interested citizen. Look how you guys treat people in this medium! I would gladly give my name except I would be afraid that someone would stone me or my famiy to death. SOME people behave badly when they have total anonymity. I hope you will acknowledge that my manners have always been firmly in place.

Obviously, the RD is for 'rude and disruptive"-a few days on the blog and trying to smear an elected official who has done more for our town over the past year and one-half than anyone I know.

Haddix ashamed of his educational background, my aching ass! I think if you look you will see his accomplishments far exceed the norm of most academics. Not every college graduate is successful, not every drop out is a failure, so what the heck is your point?

Perhaps its time for you to crawl back under your rock.

Just my two cents worth.

Submitted by totellthetruth on Wed, 10/28/2009 - 11:24am.

out of something that is a non-issue. I do believe you are the bitter one is this fight. I do not think he is out for power--you however may resemble that statement. If you read Don's material or any of the bunches of blogs he has posted you will see that he is quite literate and he is trying to protect PTC from going down the tubes.

Again RD, just because some one has a degree from a university does not automatically qualify them to run for office or have a heart that is passionate about listening to their constituents.
Again RD (this is remediation for you) look at the voting records of Haddix and Plunkett.
Stop trying to distract voters from what the real issues facing PTC are. More of the same(Plunkett=Logsdon)or reclaiming what was orginally planned for this great city we call home.

Submitted by MYTMITE on Wed, 10/28/2009 - 11:22am.

you pursued it so vehemently? I think perhaps it is you who are uneducated---that shows in the fact that you believe a college education is an indication of superior intellingence. Your blogs disprove that theory. I do believe Mr. Haddix has indicated several times what his educatonal background is--what more do you want--transcripts perhaps?? I follow these blogs fairly often and cannot remember any one of Mr. Haddix's blogs being bitter or hungry for power. Yes, he answers questions posed on this site. I would wish more running for office would do so. If he puts his name before a blog, some such as yourself brand him egocentric; when he removed his name before his blogs some asked him to replace it so they would know it was from him and he did so. Some feel he blogs too often and answers too many questions--others applaud him for answering questions others do not. As the saying goes you can please some of the people some of the time but you can't please all of the people all the time. Now, back to education, has our outgoing Mayor accomplished much that would indicate his education was instrumental? Have not some of the most intelligent and successful people not been formally educated in our halls of academia? Were you aware that Robert Woodruff, one of the most successful and powerful men in Atlanta, the state and country did not have a college degree? Gee, guess what he might have accomplished if he had that sheepskin-too bad he was held back by his lack of formal education. Much of the buildings you see were made possible by Mr. Woodruff's generosity. His many donations did much to make Atlanta the city it is today. Perhaps we should have turned down his philanthropic offerings--after all the man did not have a degree--what was he thinking!!!

Don,

I don't give a rat's patootie if you got a GED or not. However, "Government Intelligence" is an oxymoron. Better keep that one to yourself.

National Security Agency (aka No Such Agency) that intercepts all types of communication around the world. Highly technical (at least nowdays) and a government agency that atually accomplishes something. Anytime you hear of a targeted strike from a Predator drone on some Arab compound, you can bet the info came from an NSA intercept.

GED is the same as a regular diploma with regards to what one learned and test results.

College is way overrated. All they actually teach you is a bunch of liberal crap at Yale and Harvard and Emory and Georgia. You can learn some useful things at Ga Tech and other technical schools.

I've often wondered about that as well. We can't let the English, French, and Germans off the hook. They were all pretty skilled at torture.

My wife and I were in Boston last November, staying in the Theater District. On a fluke, we happened to notice that Spamalot was playing at the Colonial Theater--just down the street from our hotel. I bought tickets at the box office and we wound up with great seats just feet from the stage. I have never laughed so hard and so long in my life.

become about Bernie McMullen???? He is an employee, nothing more. We didn't vote him in. And we certainly aren't voting for him this upcoming week.

Mayor and Council can hire and fire him and any other city manager. Seems as if someone in the McMullen family is making a little too much of this election to maintain their (or their spouse's)job. Hey, if Bernie is doing his job, what does he have to be worried about, anyway?

And since when did the Catholic Church let it's publication be used for politics? First Amendment come in to play here at all?

"Bernie and Cathy and they were really upset when they found out what was going on. Vanessa won't even look Bernie in the eye and Bernie and Cathy thought they were friends."

Is the author of this letter friends with Bernie? Is that what this is all about? Is Bernie afraid he will lose his job under Haddix? That is what the above statement leads me to believe. Given that anything in the letter is true.

Our Brown clown had to remind everyone that "he" hired Bernie. Of course it was actually the entire council, but why quibble with the only one term mayor in the city's 50 year history.

So if Bernie was hired by Brown and thrived under Logsdon, what do you think Haddix will be doing during his (and don't forget Doug) first few weeks. Don can certainly get Doug (who has a full time job, by the way) and one or two of the new ladies to go along with a replace Bernie move.

Another reason I am voting for Scott (and of course the 3 ladies) later today.

Vote no on SPLOST!

That would be Vanessa, Beth, Kim - the 3 ladies - and of course, Scott.
And I went and just got back - took 10 minutes.

I did say before that I was going all-female - which would have included Cyndi, but I chickened out at the last minute. I know there is going to be a runoff for mayor and I see Haddix winning against Cyndi, so I didn't want to encourage that. Alternatively, I see Scott winning a runoff against Haddix(old pol vs, new kid; incumbent vs. reookie. etc) or if he doesn't win, he'll be gaining valuable experience.
