Drug testing for welfare receipiants

DarkMadam's picture

Today my best friend sent me an e-mail that made me stop and think. And the more I thought about it the more I agreed. I am all for personal rights and liberties, but when you are asking for help for the government (Mr. and Ms. Tax payer) I think that this request is not an unreasonable one:

THE JOB - URINE TEST
(Whoever wrote this one deserves a HUGE pat on the back!) Like a lot of folks in this state, I have a job. I work, they pay me. I pay my taxes and the government distributes my taxes as it sees fit. In order to get that paycheck; I am required to pass a random urine test with which I have no problem. What I do have a problem with is the distribution of my taxes to people who don't have to pass a urine test. So here is my Question: Shouldn’t one have to pass a urine test to get a welfare check because I have to pass one to earn it for them? Understand I have no problem with helping people get back on their feet. I do, on the other hand, have a problem with helping someone sitting on their rump--doing drugs, while I work . . .. Can you imagine how much money the state would save if people had to pass a urine test to get a public assistance check? I guess we could title that program, 'Urine or You're Out'.

How much would that cost the tax payers. I would guess a drug test is worth about 50. So if the government did it, the charge would be about 5000 per person. Seeing as everything the government does is screwed up. So I think we should just leave it alone. And does it really matter. Do you indulge in alcohol consumption. Guess you are a drug user to. Have a great week.

You wouldn't happen to be related to a recently booted I_LOVE_PTC would you? Just curious.

The state doesn't test welfare recipients for drugs? Drug testing before handing out free money kind of sounds like a no brainer to me.

Again my short-minded suggestor, it would cost more to drug test than the free money!!

How about drug testing for SPLOST pushers? Mayors, and other officials?

Then solve it by deducting the cost of the test from the first check you give the welfare recipient. What if they don't pass you ask - well that saves even more because they don't get anything.

After the first test the random method work quite well. All the state has to do is ramp up the tests when it has a budget crisis and knock a couple hundred off the welfare rolls. Kinda like the small towns do with speeding tickets. Works every time.

Good idea though. Who's going to be the first to call it racist?

Well, think some more!

The Mothers that sign up for and collect the welfare do not in general take drugs. It is the children and husbands and boy friends who do!

Personally, I think you and I and everyone else should be tested for drugs in order to get our driver's license renewed or obtain the first one!

Also, maybe when we try to buy a home at the bank?

How about an expensive car?

How about a big refund check from IRS---test first.

How about running for congress?

How about cops and firemen and town officials--they are drawing tax money also?

I could go on but would like your opinion first.

Actually, they do test municipal employees when they apply.

Were you tested? No!

First,how would you know?

Second, if you go to the PTC website and look up the job description for a police officer you will find that they are required to take a drug test. Fact is; most government jobs require you to take a drug test before being hired so why not test welfare recipients?

I think the original point was that if I have to take a drug test in order to work at my job, then the money that is taken from me without my consent and given to someone on welfare, then why should that person not have to take a drug test in order to receive that money?

Hard to argue the fairness of the point, but implementation difficult. Still, keep it on topic which is stated clearly above and noodle out how to give welfare money only to drug-free recipients.

You have to test them before you give them the money and if they fail, cut off the benfit. How you test the layabout boyfriend who takes the welfare person's check and buys drugs for himself is not enforceable through drug testing.

You don't have to test every one, every time. You culd test 1 in 10 randomly to cut costs.

I could get behind that.

Doesn't work in sports to random test----then they hide it until career over!

No Drug Tests for County Commissioners? Why not? There would be a couple of petrified faces at the next meeting if you plunked down a row of plastic cups.
