Would You Die To Defend America Today? In the 1940’s and 50’s, I was waiting to turn 18 and receive my draft notice, so I could do my patriotic duty to defend America and die doing it if necessary. And why not? I had two uncles who were currently fighting Japan at Guadalcanal in the Pacific and my daddy had just been drafted. One Uncle lost his hearing when injured by Shrapnel. I had a classmate named John Paul Collier, Jr. He went by John and his daddy was called Paul. When John came back to school the next year, the teachers called him Paul. John’s dad had been killed in the war and in his dad’s honor his family started calling him Paul. It was very sad to see a little boy lose his daddy. Every Friday evening I went to City Hall with my family to read a list of hometown boys who were killed in action the week before. Every night there was a black-out of electricity and a neighborhood air raid warden would come by and shine a flash light into my bedroom window and we would answer “all is well”. Every morning at school, we pledged allegiance to the flag and said the Lord’s Prayer. Twice a week the whole school gathered in the auditorium and sung as loud as we could, America the Beautiful, God Bless America, The Star-Spangled Banner and Onward Christian Soldiers. When I was called up for active military duty during the Cuban Missile Crises in 1962, little did I realize that one year later JFK would be assassinated, LBJ and the welfare state would begin and this would mark the beginning of the end of my patriotism. Things have changed. We’re still fighting wars but without the patriotism of long ago. We have a volunteer military because the draft is no longer acceptable. Loose divorce laws have destroyed family units. The dollar is on the verse of collapse, our politicians are crooked spend thrifts, we proclaim, “God is Dead” and legally kill babies, money is our new god and gambling is state legalized to obtain more money. Fraudulent ponzi schemes are numerous. Porn and drugs are national institutions. Crime is rampant, we don’t protect our borders and the judicial system is a bad joke. The Constitution is dead and so is America. As we watch the death march of America, a friend tells me of helping an old man read his airline ticket to find his flight gate at the Airport. He recognized the old man as being on HBO’s documentary “Band of Brothers” as one of the members of WWII’s 101st Airborne Infantry. His name was Darrell “Shifty” Powers and he was going to France for the anniversary of D-Day. “Shifty” had joined the paratroopers, made 5 test jumps in Toccoa, GA then jumped into Normandy in 1944. “Shifty” asked my friend if he had ever heard of D-Day and Normandy? My friend replied, Yes. Then, Shifty’s eyes filled with tears and he said, “I’m happy there is still some who remember”. On June 17, 2009 Darrell “Shifty” Powers passed away and with him, goes the last of patriotic America. While misdirected America cried over the death of their drug addict, child molester, rock star Michael Jackson, not a word was mentioned of a real American Hero, Darrell “Shifty” Powers. There were no parades, no week long news coverage of weeping fans on TV. Would I fight and die for what America has become today? HELL NO, would you? I Watch's blog | login to post comments |
