Shelby's Contract with Peachtree City

Shelby Barker's picture

The last couple of months have been an awesome start to our campaign. I have met many people around the community that have expressed concerns about the path our city government has taken over the past several years. These feelings of concern displayed by fellow citizens have led me to establish a written commitment of innovative ideas that will ensure Peachtree City remains the best community in the world. You will find that under my contract with Peachtree City, I take strong stances in favor of Peachtree City’s quality of life. If you find that you support the contract please go to the website to join the cause. Shelbybarker.com

First

I want to create a new legislative rule regarding re-zoning initiatives. This rule will require a four out of five majority in favor of re-zoning in order to pass the initiative. The new rule would limit voting blocks on the council and make it harder for council members to deviate from the Comprehensive Land Use Plan.

Second

I am strongly against the selling off of city assets in order to balance the budget. These facilities are jewels of our community.

Third

I will promote government efficiency by consistently asking staff to provide areas in which our government can be more resourceful. I will guide them to continually look at instances where creating a private partnership may better benefit the public, i.e. landscaping crew. We must also continue to examine areas that are low priority that can be cut from the budget.

Fourth

I will call for a restructuring of fees across the board. We should encourage innovative fee ideas such as a yearly recreational pass that provides year round access to recreational facilities and an increased usage fee structure for out of city residents.

Fifth

I stand firmly against further big box development, unnecessary annexations, or higher density re-zoning.

Sixth

I will make cart path maintenance a top priority. The upkeep of our cart path system has been pushed to the back burner for too long. We must begin to actively improve our system today in order to save ourselves from more costly repairs tomorrow.

Seventh

I support the most open government possible. We should greatly reduce “consent agenda” items and executive session meetings. I will also call for the city to utilize more venues in distributing information to the public.

Eighth

I will work closely with our county commissioners, state representatives and members of Congress to ensure that Peachtree City’s opportunity for investment and quality growth is maximized.

Ninth

I am unapologetically against any proposal that will move the city away from the village concept. Thus, I am opposed to proposals like Calullah Hills, which will ultimately abandon our village concept.

Tenth

I am committed to supporting the needs and requirements of an efficient, effective, and well-trained police and fire department.

If you are using the definition that a contract is a binding agreement, then to me your document lacks two of the two ingredients. I'm just sayin'.

It's not easy being the carbonunit

User fees to allow us to use things we already paid for with tax dollars smells an awful lot like double taxation. That's not progress unless you consider Obama's proposals for the country "Progress".

Other than that - and the 4 out of 5 vote, which won't work, you are on the right track. Of course actually getting those things done and sticking to those positions is really difficult once you get in a see the realities of running a city.

Good luck, you will certainly bring a fresh new outlook to City Council. We need that.

I refer you to "yada" by Bonkers

And having tons of business and practical experience - although judging from some of the people on council and actions they have taken - I'm overqualified.

I read your "contract" Thank you for making one. Newt was the last politician to make a "contract" His failed, maybe yours won't.

In order for me to kmow your chances of success, I have a few simple questions:
Awesome campaign so far: Is that an overwhelming fear or dred--I guess I don't like that word since "shock and awe." How can things get better than awesome?

The path that the city is on now--where is that?

Whether your ideas are "innovative" as you said--we will see. I think innovations are something "new."

As to a four of five vote majority--even the Supremes don't try that--wish they did, but it will never fly! Just elect better people!

As to selling our Jewelled Assets--it depends upon what we get for them doesn't it? Would that be the Tennis Center?

You say you will ask and guide the staff (whomever that is) to cut budgets! Are you kidding? That would be your job. The Chief and Manager won't cut his!

You want to "restructure city "fees." I take that to mean in this case, raise them!

Big boxes and high density zoning changes. All depends upon the vote doesn't it and for what reasons?
Where they are is more important than if!

"Top Priority" for cart paths. Right, "Top." To do what each year and how much? Jobs are top!

Closed meeting stopped? Hard to keep them out of Y-Not and Starbucks?

What investment opportunities does PTC want from Commissioners, etc?
More Bonds and Splosts, maybe to pay for them?

I don't know what a "Village Concept" means. What is it, exactly.
Did the Avenue kill that? Did Walmart? Did The West Side? Did the Post Office poor quality construction and location do that? How about the cruddy Police Station?

Every soul on the face of the earth wants enough cops and firemen and the best ones and the best trained ones. What % do you want to spend to do that and who will decide what enough and best and trained, means?

I'm not agin ya. I don't know ya, but I don't like generalities in politics. Detailed dollars are impossible, but "innovations" can be described.

Don't see how that killed the Village concept, but how in the world did the city let them get away with that horrible parking lot? It looks as if they just poured concrete on the ground without doing any grading. I've seen elderly people stumble getting out of their car while they are parked in the handicap spaces. Shouldn't they at least be level? How hard is that.

If the city is going to be so picky about everything else - like that poor guy in Sweetwater Oaks who had to move his fence and address number about 5 feet - why not go after the post office? The parking lot is not just ugly, it is a safety hazard. Let's shut them down until they fix it.

I suppose the land where th P.O is was bought by the Federal Post Office. It is a terible location for entry!

They are not susceptible to local piddling!

However, I will bet you that some contractor is to blame for that parking lot. It is the worst possible.
I'm sure he got paid to do the landscaping and simply did it the cheapest way---obviously he did or it wouldn'd be there! It actually was some worse to begin with and they patched it a little!

Even the Post Office wouldn't ask for an almost inaccesible and hard driving landscape!

I don't know why we always want to blame the wrong people for errors!
Everything should not have to be checked and forced! Capitalism, maybe? NO, greed I suspect.
