Sadly, The House Passes the 1,200-page Climate Bill that Congress was Not Allowed to Read

DarthDubious's picture

Despite heated objections by some Republicans, the unread 1,200-page Waxman-Markey climate bill was passed 219-212 in the House on Friday.

During Boehner’s brief attempt at filibuster, he reads passages related to the usage of "qualified youth corps" to regulate energy efficiency in regards to "the sustainability of low-end income communities." "I wonder if ACORN qualifies for these grants," Boehner quipped.

Objecting to the fact that 300 pages were added to the bill at 3 a.m., Minority leader John Boehner attempted a brief filibuster, giving time for colleagues and aides to scan the unread extra passages and present certain excerpts on the floor. Politico blasts his effort, reporting:

That wasn’t good enough for House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio), who delayed the roll call vote by reading page-by-page through a 300-page managers’ amendment Democrats added at around 3 a.m. Friday. Boehner seemed to relish the hour-long stunt, picking out the bill’s most obscure language and then pontificating about what it might – or might not – mean.

Shockingly, co-sponsor Henry Waxman objected to Boehner’s reading the bill on the House floor, and tried to prevent it on procedural grounds so that is contents would remain unknown and no one would shift support or delay the bill’s passage. Passing “laws” in secret is not law at all– it is tyranny, and it is shameful:

Waxman also wondered if any “historical records would be broken” by Boehner reading part of the bill and queried whether the tactic was “an attempt to try to get some people to leave on a close vote?”

Politico reports that Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX) raised questions about whether "there was even a copy of the current version of the bill anywhere in the House chamber."

Rep. Michele Bachmann stated plainly that the bill was "a choice between liberty and tyranny," claiming that the bill institute "control over nearly every aspect in the lives of the American people" and advocating the Forbes amendment.

Remarkably, Ed Markey, one of the bill’s co-sponsors, rose to report that a copy was only available at the speaker’s desk or online, which Politico reports, would require members "to leave the floor to access."

How could that have happened when obumbles promised that all members of congress would have at least 5 days to read every bill before voting on it? Was that just a campaign lie? Nothing has changed in Washington at all.

It's good to see that there are still some things that never change. The sun will rise in the east, all politicians are liars and crooks, death and taxes.

Is the practice of adding extensive new language to a law about to be voted on something new?

Are you sure nothing like this happened in all the years the Republicans controlled Congress?

Was it really, really new language?

Are you sure Congress had not seen it before?

Are laws things you "read," or are they things you "study," generally over the course of many weeks?

Aren't adults opposed to this practice able to vote AGAINST the law to show their displeasure over this practice?

Are things really the way you describe them?

I am dubious too.

new is the outright LIE that Obama told about transparency.. about Government being responsible to the people..
When these BOZOS will not read the Bill.. then allow 300 more pages added to it WITH NO ONE KNOWING WHAT IS IN IT.. When the Whitehouse switchboard is shutdown with the calls coming in.. With over a Million calls to Congress and the Whitehouse ALL SAYING DON"T VOTE FOR THIS CAP AND TAX and yet they do it anyway.. No.. I guess it's not really new.. Politicians LIE, Congress ignores the people and THE GOVERNMENT IS OUT OF CONTROL.. No it's not new.. WHAT IS NEW IS THE PEOPLE WHO THE GOVERNMENT IS SUPPOSED TO SERVE ARE ACTUALLY (finally) STANDING UP AND SAYING ENOUGH.. Now that's NEW.. at least since the Revolution...

Oh BTW.. as to your premise that well.."REPUBLICANS/BUSH did it too.. STILL DOES NOT MAKE IT OK TO CONTINUE SCREWING UP AMERICA..

Let me first explain how Congress works. After a law is passed in the House, regardless of whether the members have all read it in its entirety and fully understand it, it goes to the Senate. Obviously, the senators have plenty of time to read it before they vote on it, regardless of what happened in the House.

If, upon reading the law AFTER its passage in the House, a House member decides he is not happy with it, he can always let the Senate (and certainly the senators from his own state) know about his views. Then the senators can amend it. If the law is amended at all in the Senate, it has to go back before the House again before it can become law.

Even if the law is adopted, House members are free to propose amendments later if flaws are discovered in the law. Using the power of persuasion that comes from being truly right, as opposed to vague railings against taxes, they will prevail.

Thus all these crocodile tears being shed over claims that 300 pages of extra legalese were sprung on House representatives at the last minute represent simple posturing by people whose agenda is to stir up the bleeding-heart pseudo conservatives among us.

The evil geniuses who exploit these weak-minded neighbors of ours like to keep them stirred up for one purpose only. They send out letters (usually in the name of the Republican National Committee) asking for money so they can keep fighting for the people. Many of the fools respond with donations.

So we’re back with the old adage that a fool and his money are soon parted. Only fools would believe any of the propaganda used by the people who try to sabotage our democratic institutions by spreading false information and sowing doubt and dissension at every opportunity.

We’ve got you figured out, boys!

First off you are intellectually incapable of figuring me out, or anyone else I'd wager.

Second, I'm not part of any false conservative-liberal paradigm party line BS. There is very little difference between Dems, and Repubs. I hate them both equally. Only a handful of our so-called Reps are truly representing the wishes of their constituents. Besides, I thought the term was bleeding heart liberal.

Thirdly the masters of exploiting weak minds have funded both sides of the presidential campaigns since at least 1960. They own all the horses in the race, and laugh at people who actually think they are going to get something different from the next president they elect. So, who's weak minded? I voted for Ron Paul.

Lastly, informing others of wrongs occurring in our "democratic" institutions is not propaganda, the MSM would be plastering it all over TV if it was, besides, the government has been sabotaged since 1913. I won't tell you what two events occured that year, go study it for yourself, and stop being ignorant of history, aay?

... why are you here in the USA? Let me guess ...for our medical.....wait, for our MENTAL HEALTH services? Yep, best in the world.

Oh, and after we tax ourselves for global warming do you think you could go to India and China to see if they would pass even ONE single law regarding emission standards?

I digress.

Anyway, now that you have passed our fifth grade social studies course on government, what will you do next?

I know, look in to the oath of office taken by our REPRESENTATIVES ... now that's a GREAT idea.

you Hoosier you... Do you really believe what you spout.. but then again I guess you do.. Explains alot.
A little lesson for you... IT IS THE RESPONCIBILITY OF THE REPRESENTITIVES THAT WE SEND TO WASHINGTON TO REPRESENT US.. NOT SPECIAL INTEREST..
It was their DUTY to read the Bill.. not simply pass it on to let others do the work for them...
WE DO NOT TRUST THE GOVERNMENT TO DO THEIR JOB.. THEY PROVED IT WITH THE PORKULOUS BILL
They did not read that either and look what happened.. 8000 pork earmarks with BILLIONS of OUR tax money LOST..

Your simplistic view of the Government and your willingness to abrogate your responsibility of due diligence is astounding.. but then again as a progressive Liberal maybe not so astounding after all..

i.e. the (anti)Patriot Act, Natioal ID Act, FISA, the Bankster Bailout(bloodless coup)of Oct. 2008.

The law of the land is the Constitution.

I suppose adults SHOULD be able to vote against law they don't like, but I can't vote no, as I am not a congressman, or a senator. All I can vote on is those who supposedly represent me, but I KEEP GETTING SHAFTED! For some strange reason they won't do what I tell them to, as they are not listening, or are doing the will of some others who have way deeper pockets than I.

The only difference now is that a president was just elected who said this kind of politics was going to be stopped, and his "5 day rule," which just got completely ignored for expediency. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

I'm sure that most in the House hadn't seen it because it took an hour on Friday to find ONE COPY of the bill itself in the House that had been changed at 3AM with the additional 300 pages, despite howls from the Repubs asking for a copy. The first dodge was "it's on the internet," which is no help to House members since they don't have internet access and every elected official is well aware of that fact.

The whole episode was just another embarrassment from a political body the citizenry has expressed repeatedly utter contempt for.

Why the Silence from our Congressman, the self-proclaimed "Legislative Fighter" ??? Heck, the fact that there wasn't a copy of the bill for our Congressman to read doesn't matter because he can't. No one has any guts in Washington. Ask any of the state insiders about Westmoreland---- he is nothing but a trough feeder just like the rest of them.

So Westmoreland cast a “No” vote---WOW….You could teach an organ grinder’s monkey to push the right colored button and you would not have to pay them a couple hundred thousand dollars a year and an obscene retirement package. Right now we need people that are willing to go to Washington, rock the boat violently and risk being sent home after one term. Westmoreland ain’t one of those that has the rare backbone to do that. He would rather suckle on the pork. A real leader in these times would vote against any pork including pork in their own district. Westmoreland hasn't done that.

Submitted by AtHomeGym on Sun, 06/28/2009 - 4:33pm.

I do believe that he was one of the very few who did not sponsor a single "Pork" in the last bill with all the "Pork" projects included. So how would hve ptctaxpayer have voted on the "Cap and Trade" legislation? BTW, you had a chance not too long ago to "send Westmoreland home." Clearly, enough voters thought he does an acceptable enough job to return him to office.

I have heard all the negative about the cost - $3,000 per family, lost jobs, manufacturing fleeing overseas, etc. So can JeffC and some of you other Dems who presumablby support the bill you and no one in Washington has even read, please tell me the good points of the bill? Go ahead. I'm listening.

No lion, I was speaking to the fact that the federal government has turned our unalienable rights (defined as rights NOT granted by the gov't nor can be taken away it) into privledges.

The 2nd amendment deters tyranny. Just ask Hitler, Stalin, and Mao all of whom enacted total gun bans BEFORE mass-killing their fellow countrymen, as well as others.

We do not face the threat of tyranny in America. If you think so, you are delusional.

Are the tanks coming down your cul-de-sac? Has the government tried to confiscate your guns? Have you been ordered to a concentration camp?

Of course not. You like to create a fantasy in which you are so threatened that any restrictions on your ability to buy guns is unacceptable. No one has proposed a "total gun ban."

And where has God blessed a 12g pump?

fangs and claws to defend ourselves with, but brains to create weapons with which to do so. I have the God given right to defend myself, and my family, and my country from tyrants. We already live under tyranny, perhaps you do not under stand the concept of tyranny. Tanks need not be present in the streets for tyranny to exist.

tyranny:

1: oppressive power ; especially : oppressive power exerted by government
2 a: a government in which absolute power is vested in a single ruler ; especially : one characteristic of an ancient Greek city-state b: the office, authority, and administration of a tyrant
3: a rigorous condition imposed by some outside agency or force
4: a tyrannical act

You my friend are living the fantasy:"We do not face the threat of tyranny in America." The passage of laws that are not even allowed to be read in full is an act of tyranny, PERIOD.

Vaccinations at gunpoint could be coming this fall, that's according to WHO pandemic level six SOP. Take your injections like a good little slave. Keep drinking your fluoride. Be a good little compliant citizen and they may let you keep using your air conditioning next summer. For a large fee increase of course.

but I just couldn't put my finger on what was wrong until I saw a film called America: From Freedom to Fascism. You should see it. It'll open your eyes to the fact that the privately held Federal Reserve is the true power behind DC government.

Bush, Clinton, Bush II, or Obama, they are all puppets who are the front men for banksters. They are bought and paid for before the elections ever take place.

They fund both sides so their guy always wins.

Oh, and the passing of legislation that we cannot scrutinize is tyranny. Increases in your poower bill as a result of the passing of such laws, is tyranny. Poisoned drinking water is tyranny, forced vacs are tyranny, and you best believe its in the works. Did you even read the definitions I gave?
