Boehner: Climate Bill Is New Tax On Every American Family

With a vote on sweeping climate change legislation just hours away, Democrats are scrambling for support – and feeling confident that they’ll have enough to pass the bill.

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) said Friday morning that the bill will be “one of the defining votes of this Congress,” and he described it as a “new tax” that will have an impact on “every single American.”

Republicans have taken to calling the measure – formally known as the “American Clean Energy and Security Act” – a “national energy tax.”

On Friday, Michigan Republican Rep. Fred Upton took note of the force with which Democratic leaders were whipping their members, telling California Democratic Rep. Ellen Tauscher: “Congratulations on your confirmation to head up Arms Control at the State Department. You have your work cut out for you because at the end of the day today, you are going to need to repair a lot of arms on your side of the aisle.”

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) told AFP Friday the Democrats will have the 218 votes they need for passage. But party leaders are looking for more, hoping to build a big enough margin so that vulnerable Democrats can be freed to vote against the bill.

We must stop this bill from passage. If this passes its OVER!!! Taxes on ALL carbon emissions. ALL!!! Prepare to get hungry and poor.

Taxes all around for the average american will take 50% of your pay. This will make the country ripe for revolution. This is scary stuff folks. Fight the tyranny, call your congressmen NOW!!!

The vote is set to take place between 6-7PM tonight!!!

We need to begin addressing the man-made contributions to climate change. This bill needs to pass.

If this bill passes it does not mean "tyranny" or a "massive tax increase". You might agree with the bill, but life will go on. Elections have consequences. Obama and the Democrats won and, I hope they will have the courage to enact this and their other promises into law.

The bill passed the House. If the bill passes the Senate and is signed into law by the President, the country will be better off.

As for climate change, I will listen to the best science--the consensus of the scientific community. Propaganda by the right-wing political sites and conservative AM talk show hosts does not constitute a scientific debate".

This bill has nothing to do with "giving up your liberty" or any comparison to 9-11. I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you do not really believe that. If you do believe those things, then you are a very poor fool indeed.

how about the US Senate Commitee on Evironment and Public Works Website?

By scientific community did you mean Al Gore, and his PROPAGANDA movie? I only saw about 3-4 "scientists" in the film.

I'll give you some more links if the SENATE isn't enough. Oh, and the BBC is a main stream media outlet in the UK, and not a right wing anything. Take the RED pill!!!

There are too many Dems with careers on the line with this vote and some fence-sitters who'd like to vote "yes" but really hope it fails before getting signed. Repubs are smart enough to be totally against what amounts to an enormous tax increase on consumers. Dems did a decent job of lying about cap-and-trade not increasing costs, but that genie is now out of the bottle. Same with health care. Everyone is for supposedly cleaner air and better health care for all until the details emerge about how much it really is going to cost.

Meanwhile, China and India have to be laughing hysterically over this debate.
