A Destroyerman's Creed

We are Destroyerman.
Ready to sail and always can-do -
the first to arrive and the last to go.
We believe a big-ship man would have trouble filling our shoes.
We like to think we would have no trouble filling his.
We have learned the lesson of self-reliance,
of pressing the fight with all we've got,
of not being afraid of a little rough living, or any tough assignment.
We are the green-water, open ocean sailors in the
little but mighty combat ships.
We are the real sailormen,
the Destroyermen of the fleet.
We can follow the tracks and ride the backs of the dolphins.
We will be where the action is - in every tough situation.
When things are getting too rough for anyone else, they're getting just right for us

Damn Hutch, don't know if I ever lived up to that standard. Was a great time though. That's if I forget all the petty peace time crap that was around then. For example, middle of the Atlantic on the way to the Med., on our own for some reason, hotter than H, and you couldn't go on deck without your denim shirt sleeves rolled down and buttoned. Guess that does beats getting torpedoed.

The petty peacetime crap was I knew, thank God. Point to point we couldn't go over 15 knots, even with the gulf stream behind us, couldn't wear tennis shoes off the ship, didn't look right ya know, at one time they wanted everyone to hit the deck at reveille, even though there wasn't enough deck space in the compartment for all the people. You're right tho', beats the Hell out of being torpedoed.

Hutch, as a Ground-Pounder, I will admit that that's some good stuff!

It was still safer then running around in the jungle, You guys have my utmost respect. I was lucky, the only ones we fought were the Officers and the odd seabee bunch.

While I was Army, I didn't do the jungle drill--I was an intel weenie, doing stuff like the Naval Security Group guys did. Did considerable flying in single & multi-engine reconnaissance planes too. But no jungle stuff.
