Peachtree City's Hidden ProblemsDear fellow citizens, My name is Shelby Barker, I have lived in Peachtree City since 2002ish and have already scene many changes, some for the good some for the bad. But the bottom line is that Peachtree City has always been known for setting standards in many aspects of life. To the outside world Peachtree City is a bubble with little or no crime, violence etc…. In fact, this is the main reason thousands of new citizens flock to our beloved city every year. However, with the latest news about teen suicide, drug usage, indescribable sexual acts between middle school students etc… I ask you, has our little golf cart town strayed away from the values and culture which made it what it is today? Before you answer that question let me tell you a little about myself and why you should consider my opinion. You see, I grew up in a town called Olathe Kansas there I went through Elementary School, Junior High, and two years of High School. Before my junior year I moved to a little town called Peachtree City Georgia, where I attended McIntosh High School. During my two years at McIntosh I started and became the first president of the Peachtree City Youth Council, and finally I graduated in 2004! Ok, the reason why this is all very important is because I have just recently been in the “trenches”, and I promise you McIntosh High School had DOUBLE the amount of drug flow in its doors then my Kansas High School. AND THIS IS A PROBLEM… The problem is not only drugs though. Fellow citizens, we have students choking each other, committing sexual acts on the bus ride home, sexual harassment, verbal harassment, teen pregnancy, teen violence, teen suicide and I promise you the list goes on and on. Now, I will grant you, that all schools through out the world have to deal with some of these problems, but we as residents of this city do not have the guts to admit our beloved city has a MAJOR problem. AND THIS MY FRIENDS IS OUR PROBLEM… Now, what I ask every citizen to do, whether you have a student or not, is help create an environment that will destroy our major problem. Help our city realize we are not perfect, help our teachers by showing our kids what’s right and what’s wrong. I ask you to join myself and the Youth Council in taking a major step forward and come to tomorrows Peachtree City Youth Council meeting, where they will be discussing solutions to these problems. I ask you to participate in making a change. -------Peachtree City Youth Council Meeting Feb. 7th 6:30 PM @ city hall------ Thank you, Shelby Barker |
