Joseph Lowery, Jay-Z and Jeezy

Main Stream's picture

I watched the inauguration with hundreds of other Democrats on Tuesday and I would say that 98% of them were white. The room we were in was filled with applause, tears, laughter and a sense of community that I had not felt in a long time. We all watched with collective anticipation as the clock approached 12:00 noon because we knew at that moment our country would have a new President, a man who obviously we had all supported and had voted for. And after Obama took the oath of office and the inauguration continued, while Joseph Lowery delivered his prayer, we continued to watch and listen to the words with respect and deference for this Civil Rights icon. I must admit, however, when he uttered the phrase "and white will embrace what is right", I was taken aback by his words, offended really, that he would insinuate that whites did not embrace what is right, especially at this moment when all I could see around me were white people who HAD embraced what they believed to be right, by voting for Obama. If it weren't for the millions of white people in this country who voted for Obama, he would not have been elected President.

I appreciate David's mom and swmbo for trying to explain Lowery's mindset and the fact that he is most likely still living in the past. And while I respect and admire this man for enduring the injustices he faced and I celebrate his fight to change our prejudiced society, I'm still offended by Lowery's comment and believe it was totally out of place.

Last night, I watched a Jay-Z and Jeezy video showing the two rappers gyrate on stage to their rap songs they had written and performed for an inaugural event on Tuesday evening. I'm not a fan of rap anyway, but the vulgarities they spewed while rapping in tribute to Obama was sickening. I'm about as liberal as one can get but this display of vulgarity in celebration of our new President, was really disgusting. This is not art - it is crap.

For many people, other than aged civil rights icons and rappers, Obama represents unity and progress, not decade-old bitterness and divisiveness. He represents eloquence and intelligence, instead of ghetto, trash-talk rap and words rhyming with ho, mo-fo, or N*****. Obama is someone to emulate and to be proud of, not pull down to levels of bitterness or ghetto rap. Obama represents CHANGE so pull your ghetto pants up, clean up your language, stop gyrating to vulgarities, stop living in the past, and CHANGE!

I understand that some rap music can be very offensive, but there is also other forms of music that is just as bad. There are songs about worshipping the devil, drugs and killing black people. What we all need to realize is that there is bad in all shades. Pointing the finger back and forth at each other will accomplish nothing, it never has. Iam white and supported Obama from the beginning but I wish all youth would listen to Obama and look to him as a role model. I do not like rap music and do not listen to it, I also do not make judements on black people because of it. Rappers do not represent ALL black people and hard metal devil music does not represent ALL white people. I do understand that certain people get tired of hearing about slavery and how terribly treated black people were. But put yourself in their position for just one second. Just imagine if it were white people who were slaves and we had NEVER had a white president up until the year 2008. C'mon you honestly don't think we would be reacting the same way? You honestly don't think we would not still have a little hostitly for what our ancestors went through? Of course we can't relate because it was not done to us! I realize it is difficult for some people to accept that we have a bi-racial presdent and that is truly sad. But I don't think he would agree with some of the words in rapp music either. I truly hope that if anything we learn to accept one another reguardless of skin color.

I've already expressed my opinion about his 'poetry'. Professor Manis wrote an article that points out to me that ALL OF US as Americans need to stop this sick obsession with the color of Americans. It is truly a block to our unity as a people. The beauty of our country is that we have the freedom to express our ideas openly. We do not have the 'right' to continue to express our 'hate' based on color! We're destroying ourselves from within. Please take the time to read this. I'm so sorry that we have not taken the time to express the pride that we have in the diversity of the outstanding artists who call themselves Americans. We, as a people have diverse taste when it comes to 'art' - but let's not carry our 'hate' for a particular art form to 'hate' for a people.

Andrew M. Manis is associate professor of history at Macon State College in Georgia and wrote this for an editorial in the Macon Telegraph.

Andrew M. Manis: When Are WE Going to Get Over It?

For much of the last forty years, ever since America "fixed" its race problem in the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts, we white people have been impatient with African Americans who continued to blame race for their difficulties. Often we have heard whites ask, "When are African Americans finally going to get over it? Now I want to ask: "When are we White Americans going to get over our ridiculous obsession with skin color?
Recent reports that "Election Spurs Hundreds' of Race Threats, Crimes" should frighten and infuriate every one of us. Having grown up in "Bombingham," Alabama in the 1960s, I remember overhearing an avalanche of comments about what many white classmates and their parents wanted to do to John and Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King. Eventually, as you may recall, in all three cases, someone decided to do more than "talk the talk." Since our recent presidential election, to our eternal shame we are once again hearing the same reprehensible talk I remember from my boyhood. We white people have controlled political life in the disunited colonies and United States for some 400 years on this continent. Conservative whites have been in power 28 of the last 40 years. Even during the eight Clinton years, conservatives in Congress blocked most of his agenda and pulled him to the right. Yet never in that period did I read any headlines suggesting that anyone was calling for the assassinations of presidents Nixon, Ford, Reagan, or either of the Bushes. Criticize them, yes. Call for their impeachment, perhaps. But there were no bounties on their heads. And even when someone did try to kill Ronald Reagan, the perpetrator was non-political mental case who wanted merely to impress Jody Foster.
But elect a liberal who happens to be Black and we're back in the sixties again. At this point in our history, we should be proud that we've proven what conservatives are always saying -- that in America anything is possible, EVEN electing a black man as president. But instead we now hear that school children from Maine to California are talking about wanting to "assassinate Obama." Fighting the urge to throw up, I can only ask, "How long?" How long before we white people realize we can't make our nation, much less the whole world, look like us? How long until we white people can - once and for all - get over this hell-conceived preoccupation with skin color? How long until we white people get over the demonic conviction that white skin makes us superior? How long before we white people get over our bitter resentments about being demoted to the status of equality with non-whites? How long before we get over our expectations that we should be at the head of the line merely because of our white skin? How long until we white people end our silence and call out our peers when they share the latest racist jokes in the privacy of our white-only conversations? I believe in free speech, but how long until we white people start making racist loudmouths as socially uncomfortable as we do flag burners? How long until we white people will stop insisting that blacks exercise personal responsibility, build strong families, educate themselves enough to edit the Harvard Law Review, and work hard enough to become President of the United States, only to threaten to assassinate them when they do? How long before we starting "living out the true meaning" of our creeds, both civil and religious, that all men and women are created equal and that "red and yellow, black and white" all are precious in God's sight?
Until this past November 4, I didn't believe this country would ever elect an African American to the presidency. I still don't believe I'll live long enough to see us white people get over our racism problem. But here's my three-point plan: First, everyday that Barack Obama lives in the White House that Black Slaves Built, I'm going to pray that God (and the Secret Service) will protect him and his family from us white people. Second, I'm going to report to the FBI any white person I overhear saying, in seriousness or in jest, anything of a threatening nature about President Obama. Third, I'm going to pray to live long enough to see America surprise the world once again, when white people can "in spirit and in truth" sing of our damnable color prejudice, "We HAVE overcome."

It takes a Village to protect our President!!!

Please everyone, repeat after me. Obama is NOT our first Black President. He is half Black and half White raised by his White family becasue his Black Daddy left his A$$. If anything he is mostly white, Now I am not so sure that I want to take that claim. And remember that when he fails, as all Presidents do from time to time, and he will. And when that happens who are all you Blacks gonna blame then (the VP). They are gonna make mistakes. We are all human.

BUT my case is get off your butt about the rasicm. I do not own slaves. I have never owned slaves. I have hired whites, blacks, browns, yellows, and sometime greens. I am offended by Rev. Lowerys prayer. He is a racists from way back.

Now back to my soap box, Diva, Sniffles5, David's Mom, and Main Stream, if you don't like Fayette County, go back to Clayton or Henry, where ever. And if you don't like the USA, then where ever, pick one. We really don't want you here and we are really tired of your Black (yes, I said it) holier than all opinions.

OK, say it BUT Jo Anne we have a Black President now - you can't say that. OOHH Yes I can, He is 1/2 White And 1/2 Black raised by the Whites.......

Let me begin by saying the I have not addressed any blogger by name when referencing libtards and twice now you are the only one who has responded. As far as butt kicking, you are correct. The GOP definetly took one the deserved it. Unfortunately the outcome of the bloodbath was for the Country that I love, the Country that I have shed blood for, the Country that I have had my blood shed for has been taken over by a gentleman who is not fit to do my taxes. I have never been a great fan of Bush Jr. but he won and atleast had some qualifications. Now, don't try and race bait me on this topic or call me names. The liberals won, but at what price to our Country? Now, do want to debate Gitmo?

diva's picture
Submitted by diva on Fri, 01/23/2009 - 11:18pm.

1. Sorry that I didn't ignore your "libtard" comment hurled at absolutely no one Laughing out loud

2. Let's do Gitmo over a late night latte. I'm doing heavy cream with caramel drizzle.

GITMO 101: If you say a group of detainees are "known bad actors" and "terrorists" like VP Cheney liked to say, that implies you have EVIDENCE of this; that you aren't just making stuff up.

If you, then, have to release over 100 people because you actually have no evidence that they ever did anything wrong, your "they are bad people" argument becomes hollow.

And the coup de grace,

If a lifelong republican judge says we've tortured prisoners in our care, our "lighthouse for democracy" reputation is struck a severe blow that will require years to recover from.

What say you?

JacquesMolay's picture
Submitted by JacquesMolay on Fri, 01/23/2009 - 11:44pm.

I'm choosing a small bowl of ice cream. Gitmo.... Let me begin by saying that one of Bush's downfalls as I see it was his administrations gross failure to set limits. The prisoners at Gitmo should have processed a long time ago. I guess the main question I have for you is, Do you consider the terrorist attacks on 9-11 an act of war or a criminal act?

I see the attacks as an act of war. I was at ground zero a couple of days after the attack. I got a first hand view of the devastation, towers still burning, people with pictures of their loved ones standing at the fence. This event for me is not something abstract only viewed on TV. So, I do not care if during war we are a "lighthouse for democracy". If one shred of vital information was obtained at Gitmo that kept you and me safe since, then for me it was worth it. What many people fail to understand is that since the beginning of time, the people in the middle east have been killing each other. They understand this concept better than we do. We as Americans have always viewed ourselves as the good guys. We come over and kick butt then turn around and rebuild the same area. This type of thinking does not apply. The shutting down of Gitmo is an enormous mistake for the safety of our Country.

Now, if it was a criminal act then by all means lets put them in the criminal justice system.

How do you view it?

diva's picture
Submitted by diva on Sat, 01/24/2009 - 12:04am.

9/11 an act of war? Okay, by what country? When you have international, non-state sponsored terrorists, who do you declare war on? Who, then, signs the surrender agreement? 9/11 imagery, though tragic, does not provide a country to declare war on. The images of ground zero are much like OKC and the Alfred P. Murrah building. Both terrorist acts. Neither by state-sponsored entities. 9/11 was an act of war by Al Qaeda, yet that has not much to do about Gitmo. Gitmo has far more than al qaeda members. And if we are a country of laws, we can not act lawlessly. If you create more terrorists than you kill, you will never win a war against terrorists. Israel has learned this lesson over and over and over again. I want us to be smarter.

JacquesMolay's picture
Submitted by JacquesMolay on Sat, 01/24/2009 - 12:22am.

I agree that there are more than al quack pot members at Gitmo. However, we have been afforded the luxury of not having regular terrorist attacks in part because of information obtained at Gitmo. The hatred of America is not confined to only one middle east country. Smarter is not the issue here, you can not negotiate or rationalize with that type of hatred. I may be wrong, we'll see how Obama does at the negotiating table. If he fails, we pay!!

Thanks for the exchanges Diva, have a good night.

This is just too much. We had 'rules'/ guidelines regarding detention of persons who would harm our country - even if they were not 'soldiers'. This could have been handled correctly under the 'Rule of Law' and our Constitution. I'm reminded of Nixon's line: If the President does it - it's legal. Sad.

I seem to have more than "whiteness" in common with this guy. On reading his piece, I, too, found myself "fighting the urge to throw up."

This piece reads like satire--or the work of an adolescent. Look, in particular, at his "three point plan" at the conclusion. Are you sure it's for real?

What color is the sky in your world, Professor Manis?

If Manis wants to lump himself in with the racist whites, that is his preogative. They are, I believe, in the minority in this country even though they are the ones that get the attention and are in the news. I have nothing to get over, in the context of race. Neither do my children. What is "truly a block to unity" is this assumption that hasn't "changed".

Professor at a college... hmmm my guess liberal.. Most of academia comes from the hate America first crowd... so hate your own race could only be next...
I am white and I was raised by a BLACK FAMILY.. and to be called a racist just because I am white well needless to say "Just pisses me off".. 99% of the White people I know... have never even made an off-color joke about blacks.. Have we discussed issues in the black community.. yes, as well as, the Jewish, Muslum and white communities..
Mr. Manis needs to take a real hard look at himself.. he obviously has some dark secrets he is keeping in the closet.. me thinks he doth protest too much..

Discrimination in any form is WRONG.. Just because some have done wrong in the past does not color all for the future.. I and many others are simply tired of having a past which NONE OF US had anything to do with throwed in our collective faces..
Minorities (read Black)need to get over blaming the "white guy" for their issues.. When ever anyone attempts to point out where the trouble lies.. if they are white.. they are yelled down and called racist.. if they are black ie.. Bill Cosby they are yelled down and called uncle tom's...
White America has just elected a Black President.. it is time for the agitators to sit down shut up and enjoy the ride that they helped build... I realize that a lot of their power is derived from keeping us divided, but it is time to stop the rhetoric.

I agree. The jig really is up for these professional race warlords (at least it should be). I was disgusted and offended to see the race pimp Lowery indict an entire race of people at the annointing...um, I mean inauguration.

Good grief!!! Enough is enough.

I have watched all week as thin-skinned, oh so sensitive souls have expressed outrage at one line in an otherwise wonderful prayer.

I listened to Rev. Lowery's prayer. I read it again later. I thought that maybe he should have rephrased the part about whites getting it right. But it was no big deal. I smiled and went on with my life.

Some of you seem to have a great deal of guilt and hostility to deal with. You seem to look for any opportunity to scream "race card" and go on about how injured and hurt you are by a few words.

Please can we just move on.

"But it was no big deal. I smiled and went on with my life."

You are assuming that these folks have a life. I was offended to. Had to let it be known so I wasn't guilty by my silence. Give folks their time to grieve. On a side note, I was watching Fox the other day, for no good reason, and I couldn't help but notice that it is like a forum for the losing team. They were showcasing Dana "No one can run a business like me" Fiorino of all people! And Michelle Malkin for good measure.

Like I said. Let them grieve. Let them have their time..... Smiling

Less than 1% of the white population had ancestors that were responsible for slavery. My ancestors were still in Germany.

I have nothing to feel guilty about or apologize for. How many of the warring tribes in Africa have made restitution for what their ancestors did?? The crime of selling rival tribes to be slaves??

I'm sick of dealing with the hate directed at an entire race of people for the sins of a few. I'm really sick of trying to appease people who use the race card to get a free pass through life.

Just who was it who allowed military men when they returned from WWII to have to sit on the back of the bus; drink from an inferior water fountain; go to the back door of a restaurant; - must have been those irresponsible black people. Who was it that didn't allow 'black' folks to vote in the south until 1964? I guess the civil rights movement was just a waste of time, because every American has always been treated with respect in our country. We should take the Jim Crow laws out of our history books - but wait - maybe they were the 'legacy' of slavery - for which no one is responsible. Let's really move on - and stop the tired rhetoric of 'I never owned slaves'. WE KNOW! But since no one was responsible for the Jim Crow laws - and/or segregation de jure or de facto - no need for any apology to anyone. Rest easy. All are absolved. Those who have achieved more than most Americans - white or black - do not consider themselves victims - but survivors; citizens of a great country; and when given the opportunity, can serve with great honor. It wasn't 'white' people who allowed/supported Jim Crow - it was our country. Our country should apologize - not just 'white' people. We, Americans, allowed a great unjust law to discriminate against brother Americans. Let's hope we never do it again.

It is a "TIRED PIECE OF RHETORIC!!! It wasn't ME that "allowed military men when they returned from WWII to have to sit on the back of the bus; drink from an inferior water fountain; go to the back door of a restaurant; - must have been those irresponsible black people. Who was it that didn't allow 'black' folks to vote in the south until 1964..." But it was ME, that asked my Mom why she had to serve blacks at the take-out window and it was ME that thought it was wrong way back in the 60's!!! Come on, DAvid LOW-ery's Mom, it's HISTORY. And not all of us ALLOWED it to happen---it just happpened. And NOW we have a bi-racial person occupying the White House. Looks like that horrid, unfair America EVOLVED.

. . .there were many of all colors that saw what was wrong - and many in the '60's who took steps to not allow it to happen. It amazes me that those who personally claim that they did all they could during those times - feel no problem saying I'M SORRY THAT HAPPENED'. I'm tired of the rhetoric of I DIDN'T OWN SLAVES or I DIDN'T KNOW THE CAMPS FOR THE JAPANESE WERE SO TERRIBLE - as an answer to the mistakes our country has made. . .but thanks for your sincere input. And thanks for asking your mom about serving 'blacks' in their allowed place. (There were places in the south where we could eat - that were owned by 'whites' - but I really understand that was the way it was. No one is blaming YOU. True, it's history - and I lived it. It's my history - and I'm so appreciative of those who lived it with me and have the courage today to say, 'I'm sorry' instead of I DIDN'T OWN SLAVES.

Submitted by skyspy on Sat, 01/24/2009 - 10:24am.

EVERYONE is tired of rhetoric.

I think everyone the world over feels bad about the holocaust, feels bad about slavery, especially all of the slavery and tribal warfare that continues on today in Africa. I think everyone feels bad about the Japanese work camps, about 911. All people feel bad for these terrible events that have occured.

Instead of "rhetoric" that condems whole races of people, let's blame the small few that were responsible for these incidents. I think ALL of the previously mentioned incidents are terrible. I do not feel guilty and I won't apologize for any of my ancestors they weren't here. Everyone is tired of hate/shame/blame rhetoric. The rhetoric that expects every white man to apologize for a small few is turning many hearts hard and cynical.

Instead of licking wounds from the past let's embrace our country, all barriers are gone now. Let's celebrate together.

Submitted by Davids mom on Sat, 01/24/2009 - 1:21pm.

I think we are definitely on the same page here - except for one issue. White people are not the only ones in this country to have responsibility for its actions - past, present, or future. Aren't we all Americans? This is the point that so many fail to recognize - so I'll just say it plain. Whites are not the only ones to blame - so why are you taking all of the blame because some minorities have also missed the point. Barriers will not be gone until all Americans realize that those actions were done by OUR COUNTRY. Until we are ready to accept this truth - this 'race' conversation will continue to raise its head. It's taken almost 3 years for the participants in this discussion to even get this close to this 'truth'. The rhetoric should not condemn just one group of Americans - just like the historical election of Obama is not the work of just one group of Americans - it took all of us working together to reach this point. I think that those (black and white) 40 and over are the ones who have taken the rhetoric of blame/shame/hate to heart - and are having the most difficulty getting over it. My children and my grandchildren have truly moved on. Are we ready to admit that our country made a mistake and did not live up to the words found in our Constitution? I think we're much closer to it now - and no one needs to hear 'I wasn't there; I didn't know; my family weren't slave owners, etc., etc., etc. It's not a matter of guilt - it's a matter of wanting to insure that we never go down this slippery slope again with another group of Americans.

You betcha! It has been my experience that regardless of whom a person sleeps with/or how he sleeps with them, he can be very ethical in the work place, etc. I just don't feel their sexual preference is any of my business. I detest pedophiles or others who impose themselves on others - homosexual or heterosexual. But denying a person his civil rights due to his sexual preference - which should be private - is wrong, IMO. How do you feel about that?

Yes, there are definitely limits to my liberalism. When we were driving through Atlanta on Tuesday, I wanted to shout out the window to the kids acting "gangsta-ish" and tell them to pull their trousers up... "We have a BLACK PRESIDENT"...change is here! Try to be more like him, pull up yer pants up...and why aren't you in school anyway!!!!???"

Cy: I'm a moderate too. Having the wisdom to listen and consider with an open mind an opposing view does NOT make you wimpish...it makes you wise! I just started to read Ron Paul's book "A Foreign Policy of Freedom"....he makes some very good points that have me reconsidering some of my views. That does not make me weak in my convictions - it makes me better able to form opinions based on a variety of informative sources. My friend, you and I are not wimps - we are open minded! Remember, a tree that doesn't bend will break in the stormy wind.

Carbon: I agree, gold does look better on darker skin.

Everyone: We do need to get another coffee meeting together. How about next Saturday? Let me know. Main and Carbon - I expect ya'll to be there, I'd love to meet you.

Peace out!
