Israeli-Palestinian conflict in Gaza

Main Stream's picture

So, the Palestinian's and Hamas lob several bombs and missiles over the fence at Israel. I know they're sick and tired of being oppressed, their children starved, rations, etc etc. I can understand their plight and so the Palestinian people fight on. But, I can also see why Israel would retaliate against them. Israel attacks with major bombage and now crosses the border into Gaza in order to obliterate Hamas, with of course mega collateral damage and civilian deaths. Why did Israel attack with such force this time? The Palestinians have always been poking sticks at the big tiger in the cage but why did Israel get so pissed off now? Why not years ago? Is this their last attempt to finally eradicate the Palestinians in Gaza?

It's absolutely insane that the continuing centuries-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict bleeds over into the rest of the free world producing violence and terrorism generation after generation. All over a piece of dusty desert land topped with religious Mosques and Temples... just sickening.

Hey Jeff, are you out there in cyberspace? Can you weigh in with your insights? I've been in the Wash DC area for the past week and only checking in now...

btw - my secular opinion on all this:

Guess you slept through history class, any how, typical.. Check out the greatest story ever told. Anyone???

Submitted by mysteryman on Mon, 01/05/2009 - 12:01am.

At the close of WW II, we had taken control of 2/3rds of all indo China, the allied forces occupied all of the middle east and deep into northern Africa. Our own forces dominated and wrest control from Japan all of the pacific from pole to pole, almost all of europe with exception of far east europe was under allied control as well. The only thing left to conquer was Russia itself, in which plans for this end game had already been drawn up. So what did we do.. We not only gave it all back, but helped these societys rebuild, their nations. Now all these years later this is the thanks we get.. And to this day we still are trying to police lands that we had conqured, so long ago, and gave back to the people who lived there. Only to have their grandsons and daughters spit in our face. pathetic. There would be no Saudi royalty today if we had not come to their rescue, for they were nothing more than nomadic goat herders held hostage by the germans, what about Afganistan, occupied by Japan, as well as the rest of indo China, Korea, which we still police to this very day, technically still at war with each other, Yes thats right North and South Korea never signed a peace accord... And now as of 2010 Japan will be able to re-arm itself for the first time since the peace aggrement was signed in Tokyo bay. Whats next do we involve ourselves in this region as well. To think that we could or would have any influence in this region is sheer maddness in itself. These people have been in conflict with each other since the dawn of time. Will we ever learn anything that history has already taught..Bring our troops home before it is too late. While i do not condone genocide, or the collateral damage of civilians being killed. The people of this region have had ample time to clear out, 2009 years A.D. is plenty of time for anyone who has a pair of shoes on their feet to get to a marchin.. President Obama i emplore you to not get drawn into this quagmire, at best the U.N Should call for the mandatory evacuation of all who want leave this region. Then let them have at it no holds barred, for it is their destiny. And the last shot will not be fired until the end of time....GOD BLESS US ALL...

Is the only way this conflict will ever be brought to an end, its just a matter of who, what, where, when, and how. Sand when exposed to heat makes glass. Sad part is when it happens the equipment used will probably have made in U.S.A stamped on it.. How ironic....

When are those crazy Palestinians ever gonna get with the program?

We won WW2 and it was our God-given right to install a Jewish state on top of their heads. What else were we gonna do? We certainly didn’t want all the surviving Jewish refugees movin’ over here, and Europe didn’t know what to do with ‘em. Besides, the Bible-thumpers had been clamoring for “restoration” of a Jewish homeland to enable JC’s big encore.

So when opportunity knocked Harry By God Truman answered, despite the objections of George C. Marshall and the other State Dept. types who worried that the establishment of Israel would lead to an endless quagmire. What a bunch of wimps.

Since then we've spent thousands of lives and billions and billions and billions of dollars on our little middle east adventure, and as you can plainly see it's been blood and treasure well spent. Well, unless you're the Palestinians, who STILL just don't seem to grasp the genius of this set-up.

Maybe we should have set up Israel where the Carolinas are. I’m sure all the native Carolinians would have just fallen into line and lived in peace and harmony with them.

I'm here vicariously. I'm fishing in Florida with only a dial up. My son may have cracked a rib landing a 200 lb. sea turtle. That'll teach him for catching an endangered species! (We filled out the forms and released him... the turtle not my son.)

This is the test Biden was talking about for Obama. Strange that it came from the Israelis and the complicit Bushies. After all these years they still don't understand anything.

Hamas is stupid to shoot bottle rockets into Israel against F15's. They were trying to provoke an attack which they did. IMO, the Israeli attack weakens Fatah which will be seen as complicit because they will not rally for Hamas. Conversely, Hamas will be strengthened because they cannot be exterminated. Mere survival against the overwhelming force is winning, just like Hezbollah seemingly won in Lebanon even at the price of destroying the infrastructure of southern Lebanon.

Assuming Israel's offensive is successful and they destroy Hamas what is the end game? Occupation of Gaza? It has never been successful in the past; what's different this time?

Gaza is now the 3rd worst starvation site in the world because of the blockade which Israel agreed to lift during the cease fire and never did. Average calorie intake is approaching 600 calories per day. What do they expect from starving people? Hamas is terrorizing civilians with their rockets. Did they think Israel would not respond?

Desperation meets stupidity.

Israel decided to change the game while their lapdogs were in control of Washington not knowing what the Obama people will do when they come in (16 days!) but sure of the current occupants. Livni is making a show of force for the upcoming elections. Lots to catch up with when I get back.

Death and destruction. The Bushies, Likud, Kadima and Hamas seem to revel in it. Maybe the next administrations will prefer peace.

Doesn't matter to you that there are about 1.47 million civilians there? Just kill them all and let God sort it out, right?

Now, Fred. I appreciate the rare chance to look under your hood and hear thoughts that are actually yours.

How does a two-bomb, two-city nuclear attack equate to "not stopping until there is nothing left?" We stopped didn't we? So our OBJECTIVE was NOT destruction of all Japanese people or their government. So, any other guesses as to what political entity had destruction of a race of people as their objective? Two more guesses and you should have it.

Good to see you back among those whose ideas and views are as divergent as snowflakes.
If I may, until the pursuit of mideast peace looks seriously at how the factions can coexist vice at how each can individually exist, the problem will fester from this generation to the next. As you know, post WWII countries were held together by autocrats such as Tito in Yugoslavia, Pahlavi in Iran, Kim in N Korea, and so on. These folks held the mentality of "eliminating" any and all opposition by brute force.(Not far from what has been espoused here).
I would like to think that we, as a country and as a people, have grown and matured since then, surely we are more educated and that with access to information at the world's fingertips, we are certainly better informed. That said, the brute force methodology can be but a temporary solution and I believe that some smart guy or gal out there may just have the answer. I can only hope it does not entail the likes of $10M a day that bought us the last peace efforts.

Let me see if I have this correct:

Israel wants the terror people in Gaza to stop shooting bottle bombs at their land. Now also they want to wipe out the terror people in Gaza before they leave. They gave them a day or two to leave but they didn't.

The terror people want Israel to leave Palestine (Israel) and go back wherever they came from to Israel. Nothing else will do.

Isn't there a bunch of Palestinians in Jordan? Isn't one of the Queens a Palestinian? Maybe the Palestinians could go there? Is it big enough to hold them?
Was that supposed to be their "homeland?" If not where?

Did the British leave this mess in the 40s? Somewhat like we will leave Iraq, I suppose!

Are the Palestinians Arabs? I know the Jews are mostly not. Is that the problem?

Maybe Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Egypt, and Indonesia, woulds take them?

I mean take the Palestinians!

I guess I'm still confused about this stuff! Would Turkey help out any? What are the Greeks? It is close by.

We already have a bunch of Jews and Arabs and Palestinians here! Might we take one or two of the groups to solve the problem?

Or, is that why we help the Jews all of the time? To keep them there?

Somebody said Christ was would be back into Israel and that is why the Jews exist there! That makes little sense since Christ was just a Rabbi to them.

What is in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Kashmir? Would they help? I guess India has too make sick-ems or whatever to help. China would have no interest, would they? They are Confusedicians aren't they?

I know, It just dawned on me! Australian outback. Very similar ground to middle east and desolate.

Let's do it!

While Gaza is being bombarded by American-made F-16’s, here’s some food for thought: During the German occupation of Greece, the occupiers posted the following rules: If any German soldier was found murdered, 10 Greeks would immediately be rounded up at random and executed; if there was a repetition, the number would go up to 100. This draconian measure was not put into effect until the very end of the occupation in 1944, well after the Italian collapse of 1943. Communist agitators would go into what they thought were conservative neighborhoods—in other words, well-off precincts—spot a drunken German soldier, kill him, and then beat a hasty retreat. The next day innocent people would pay the piper. At times, the German high command rescinded the order, as it became obvious what was going on.

Switch to Gaza 64 years later. Since 2005 Israel, which is still punishing the original inhabitants of the lands it rules or occupies, has killed 150 Palestinians for each Israeli killed these last eight years. Just think of it. Seventeen Israeli lives have been expunged by the murder of 2550 Palestinian ones. That’s doing much better than the Nazis. And Elliot Abrams, son-in-law of neocon propaganda minister Norman Podhoretz, who’s ensconced in an office deep in the bowels of the White House, calls Hamas “terrorists” and urges even more severe punishments. In 2006, Israeli artillery fired a dawn barrage of shells, supposedly against militants in the Gazan village of Beit Hanoun. The guns missed. Seventeen members of a Palestinian family, the Athamnehs, died in their pajamas, cut to pieces by fragmenting 6-inch howitzer shells. The Israelis did not even issue an apology.

So where is Obama on this one? I’ll tell you where—trying to stay out of the way of AIPAC and the Israel lobby that dictates American foreign policy in the Middle East.

I’ve never been a friend of Islam; however, it’s always been perfectly clear to me that the Israelis are the ones sowing terror and the Palestinians are the ones besieged. The American people have been so brainwashed, they have it the other way round.

By your logic.. If your neighbor shoots at you and your family everyday and no one will stop him, no amount of pleading or giving him your stuff..will make him stop.. he just keeps shooting at you everytime he sees you or your kids (in your own yard)... then when you take a baseball bat or gun and stop him yourself.. then you are the terrorist..

Obama is making a dramatic statement by not saying anything at this time. For over a year Israel has sealed the borders of the West Bank and Gaza strip, not allowing anyone to work, earn money or get food deliveries in.

The 1.4 million people inside Gaza are literally being starved to death by Israel.

The only way food has gotten in is through smuggling and not nearly enough can be smuggled in.

That's what is really taking place in the cesspool known as Israel. Yet the U.S. media isn't bothering to tell the American people about this. If the American people knew that Israel was intentionally starving over 1.4 million people to death, it would change the way the American people react.

My take on the situation is that Hamas has decided to make the citizenry of Gaza the equivalent of a group "suicide squad" and sacrifice everyone towards their stated goal of wiping out Israel. They are counting on the Israeli government to "take the bait" and respond to the crude rocket attacks with overwhelming force and destruction that fans the flames of hatred toward Israel, thereby hastening its demise. Politically, I believe that Israel is foolish to be responding this way. Personally, I am sickened to my very soul to witness this carnage on a helpless populace.
