Civics Test

JeffC's picture

Kathleen Parker has an interesting article about the findings of the Intercollegiate Studies Institute which gave a civics quiz to 2500 people and found that people were to ignorant to vote.

Interestingly, elected officials were the worst performers.

Voters Fail the Test

And you can take the test:

I missed 5, 2 of which I knew better and may have answered correctly except I that took the test after a 12 hour work day (a potential reason, not an excuse). Not too bad for a unit in my condition I suppose. I missed the Gettysburg address question, and should have gotten the FDR and the supremes one, and the anti-federalists and bill of rights one. The levee question had the hint about defense, which got me thinking along the correct line. Thank you JeffC.

I hope everyone has a nice Thanksgiving, I know that I have a lot to be thankful for, both for what I have, and for what I don't have.

Nice exercise. I missed 3.

I thought the commentary from the W. Post was interesting.

Talking about the founding fathers...
They understood that an ignorant electorate was susceptible to emotional manipulation and feared the tyranny of the masses.

I missed 3. I'm still arguing about the levees.

Didn't you guys watch Ken Burns' The Civil War? One of the historians claims that Lincoln likely emphasized, "Of the people, by the people, for the people...."

Ken Burns delivered a moving speech there last week in celebration of the 145th anniversary of Lincoln's address. We were just minutes away from Gettysburg that morning and considered a visit. We headed to Connecticut instead, and that evening we saw the program on CSPAN. Bummer. I would have loved to have attended. I can't seem to find it on YouTube.

I missed the Gettysburg Address one too. The levees one was because they didn't have to pay or it? Uh... they don't pay taxes??? I'm still arguing. LOL

I focused more on "national defense" rather than the levee. It made better sense to me viewing it that way. The levee was what I considered it "noise" and drew away from the question's intent.

I missed 7, 11, and 33

Cy: You're right, most normal people are asleep @ 2:30. I've been sleep deprived, physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausted. I think the ever constant twitch in my right eye and the sharp stabbing pain in the left are signs that I need to slow down. I missed the Gettysburg question too, and, like you, could kick myself. Mostly what I missed were the questions dealing with economics, and I've never claimed to be a genius in that field.

Yardman: Give my best to your family. I don't know if you remember meeting me before, but I worked briefly with your daughter.

I must go finish my stuffed tomatoes - can't let cousin Carrie show me up this year. Smiling

...stuffed tomatoes - can't let cousin Carrie... Is this a scene from a movie that came from an earlier age?

Would that be the movie "Carrie" or "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes"?
The tomatoes were a big hit this year and Carrie and I were passed the electric knife for the annual turkey massacre.

Hope yours was a good one.

I took the test and got 32 out of 33 answers right (or 96.97%). I missed the question on the main issue in the Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858, but of course I wasn't there.

This is a fairly easy test. Some questions are a little strange, like being asked to come up with the definition of profit. Only very sorry people wouldn't know that.

Thanks for the test, Jeff!

As a naturalized citizen I felt proud to get 90.91%.
One question I should have known but the questions about Puritans and Levees got me. Good test.

Very interesting!

I scored 23/33 - 69.70%.

I am a little ticked off that I didn't do better - I'm not used to scoring below 90% on anything. I have, however, taken civics tests before and scored quite well.

What I found the most alarming is, as you pointed out, that our elected officials scored so low.

"Who will govern a free nation if no one understands the mechanics and instruments of that freedom?" - Kathleen Parker

This may well be my next quote of the day. I write a quote for the day on the board at work everyday. Sometimes my aim is to amuse and other times to evoke thought, but always they are purposeful in creating conversation (I've said before that I am an over educated bartender). I am often amazed by how little people know, ie: "Who is Ralph Waldo Emerson?".

Well, I imagine that your score was pretty high. You seem to be incredibly civic minded - I hear you have a politician in the family. Smiling I know that I have learned a couple of things from the likes of you - "...blogging - makes one smarter.". Aside from personal conversation, what better forum could there be for the exchange of ideas than blogging on The Citizen?

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

"The invariable mark of wisdom is the ability to see the miraculous in the common." - Ralph Waldo Emerson (gotta love Emerson!)

Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving,

Shannon

BTW - sorry for the asshole comment a couple of weeks ago.

Took the "civics" test and missed two...both in the economic ones. You don't think it is slanted do you? LOL. Hope everyone has a great day. I look forward to a blessed holidays season of insightful political discussion and semi- intelligent social commentary. Keep the faith.

She probably is more mature than most politicians - although, she does call her brother 'butt fungus' from time to time. Then again, I've heard politicians call each other worse names than that. It would be funny to hear Martin call Saxby 'butt fungus'!LOL
