Palin on SEX ED / abstinence-only

In 2006 candidate Palin said she would fund abstinence-only education programs in schools. "The explicit sex-ed programs," she added, "will not find my support." The stance, which reflected the priorities of the GOP, nevertheless led to an incredulous editorial in the Juneau Empire.

"Abstinence may be a laudable goal, but failing to educate teenagers about how to protect themselves from disease or unintended pregnancy is tragically misguided. According to the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, abstinence-only programs do not reduce sexual activity, teen pregnancy or sexually transmitted disease. Every day 10,000 U.S. teens contract a sexually transmitted disease, 2,400 get pregnant and 55 contract HIV. Unintended pregnancies happen to Republicans, Democrats and people of all faiths."

Now today we learn her 17 year old daughter is pregnant.

Irony here wouldn't you say?

Once, aboard the Straight Talk Express, McCain was asked if he supported the use of contraception or President Bush's abstinence-only education program to stem the spreading of AIDS.

"After a long pause, he said, 'I think I support the president's policy.' Does he believe that contraceptives help stop the spread of HIV? After another long pause, he replied, "You've stumped me."

Quite a pair Republicans

As a writer pointed out recently, “Interesting that when John Edwards’s and Jesse Jackson’s ‘troubles’ came to light, nobody asked whether they were employing proper birth-control techniques, and, if not, why not. Those questions are reserved for the daughters of female candidates” — for the teenage daughters of female conservative candidates, I might add. Hope the media sees what fools they are making of themselves, and the credibility they lose each time their own biases and prejudices take over their souls.

It's no surprise that politicians who advocate abstinence only education programs find themselves under scrutiny when their lives become examples of why their policies don't work.

Everyone's talking about how personal a matter this is for Palin and her family, and I couldn't agree more. All situations like these are deeply personal. No one should judge Palin or her daughter for the pregnancy. However, every conservative that promotes no exception abortion bans and abstinence only education and talks about how deeply personal this is and how everyone should stay out of Palin’s family life is a hypocrite. I don’t get how it’s okay to legislate how they feel about these issues while at the same time saying the matters are so personal. It’s okay for government, in the form of restrictive laws, to get into the lives of Americans, but it’s not okay for the media to get into Palin’s?

It's not okay to judge Palin or her daughter. However, I think relating what's going on in Palin's own family to her stances on certain issues is fair game.

I agree with Obama - candidate’s children and family should not be part of the political discussion. It is a shame that the Republican Party did not let the public know about this before (they say McCain knew). This should have been released to the public as a 'fact' rather than being found out through the process of validating a 'rumor'. The discussion of Abstinence vs. Sex Ed being taught in schools can be discussed - but not by constantly referring to Palins daughter. My heart goes out to this young woman. Where is the political wisdom by thinking that this would not be discussed if it were presented as a 'rumor'?

I feel sorry for the girl and, clearly, the smarter tactic would have been to take the fact public from the start and control the spin. The way they did this just makes the politicians look desperate and embarrassed the girl.

However, what I keep coming back to is the thought that Rove and his minions would have NEVER let a Dem's kid get a free ride. They love to say "it's a private family matter" when the scandal involves one of their party's kids (Cheney's gay, pregnant daughter OR Anheiser Bush (aka "the Bush twins") getting tanked at college parties and on overseas trips). But they crank up the slime machine full force when it's a Dem's family. And, let's not forget that the party that has won elections on "Family Values" has set itself (and its children) up for the gleeful unearthing of hypocrisy that they reap (e.g. Larry "I am not gay I have a wide stance" Craig, Ted "I just got a massage but I didn't take the chrystal meth" Haggard and Mark "I like my pages young and male" Foley).

Finally, the thing that interests me is that Palin's statement emphasized that the family is supporting the daughter. Funny that her positions on unintended pregnancy (whether by rape, incest or voluntary intimacy) do not take into consideration that all females (regardless of age) do not get the benefit of that support. And her party's adamant position against providing that support through public resources (free/low-cost pre-natal care, adoption support and foster care funding) or legal protections (pregnant employee protections and, yes, abortions for pregnancies due to rape or incest) is cold-hearted, to put it kindly.

So, I agree. Leave the girl alone (her mother's political ambition has damaged her enough) but don't stop talking about this issue and how different circumstances (other than the party candidate's child being the unintended parent-to-be) would get a completely different response from the party of "Family (Political) Values".

Pregnant by an emigrating tramp, forcibly? I hope not!

Do not---I repeat, do not, cause an abortion by making a speech, riding an airplane twice, and traveling thousands of miles after water breakage!

We need another VP candidate---and not Mitt, der Schmitt!

If Cheney's holding the gun, the groom is absolutely safe. The bride and the attending friends and family, however, should practice ducking.

I'll take a VP candidate with a pregnant 17 year old daughter over a Presidential candidate that has a mentor that is a preacher from a racist, hate-filled, Marxist church any day.

Also, I'll take a VP candidate with a hubby with a 22 year old dui over a Presidential candidate that whose wife thinks that America is "just downright mean".

You would take ANY republican candidate when offered!

And Sarah Palin would be in a position to push forward her agenda to dictate the reproductive decisions of others? Unbelievable.

daughter's and not the mother's? Has there been more proof presented other than that Palin didn't look pregnant? That she went all the way home instead of going to nearby hospitals? I have not seen or read of any definite proof. It would be terrible to lay this all on a 17 year old with not truth to back it up. I am speaking as a mother who would hate to see her child get this kind of adverse publicity.

to the Down Syndrome baby... this is the campaign release from about an hour ago

Sarah Palin's 17-year-old , unmarried daughter is five months pregnant, the campaign has announced. Hoping to quell internet rumors about about her youngest son, Palin released the news about her daughter Bristol earlier today.

A shrill fundamentalist family with a preggo 17 year old....that's almost a cliché.

How very sad. Bristol Palin is now the nationwide poster child for the absolute failure of "Abstinence Only" sex education in our country's schools.

Did we ever figure out if this will be her first or second child?

is in the ear of the beholder, and only dems are allowed 'mistakes'.

"Look closely children, this banana represents a penis, only bigger; we don't want to scare you. Girls, you take the condom out of the package and roll it over the banana, I mean penis, like...like this and then you lay down and let him in, as shown in this diagram. For our more advanced 13 year olds, please refer to your copy of the The Joy of Sex for optional positions. Now you are protected from disease and pregnancy. Have fun!!"

I'm sure that it is only due to such graphic and open discussion that Chelsie C. never got pregnant...or maybe its just because she was such an ugly kid, and her daddy had first dibs. Oops, can't say that can I? She's part of a protected minority, intelligent democrats.

Keep using condoms lefties, there are too many of you out there already and I might need some rationed health care soon!

Poor Bristol does not get a say on having her baby or going Roe vs. Wade. Political convenience has already decided she MUST have this baby, no matter if she is mature enough to deal with the responsibility.
