back to the early 1950's when commercial air travel was in its post WWII build-up. Here's a couple of videos featuring Arthur Godfrey - yes he was a pilot - and an Eastern Airlines' Super Connie - Lockheed Constellation - L1049.

One thing that Mr. Godfrey didn't reveal about those Wright 3350 engines was that they were very prone to beat themselves apart.

Enjoy!

Thanks for sharing. I don't know much about aviation - but remember thinking as a child that only very special people would be able to fly in a 'jet'. Flying from LA to Chicago was a big moment in my life when I was 7 or 8. (And how about smoking in the cockpit!!) Chesterfields no less. LOL!

Oh I remember smoking on commercial flights. When I first broke into the biz some years ago, I had to go and clean the nicotine that was literally caked on the valve that controlled the air pressure in the cabin - AKA an outflow valve. You can't begin to believe how thick it was. Lets just say, a putty knife was needed to remove this nicotine crud. But, it made it easy to find leaks around doors seals as it left that brown cruddy residue as visible clue. I'm sure glad I never smoked.
