County Commission Run Off

By: BOLO

For those who may have forgotten, we still have a runoff for county commission between incumbent Peter Pfeifer and Lee Hearn. As far as I am concerned 2 major issues have made up my mind and I'd be curious about what other people think.

First, Pfeifer (at the risk of being ridiculed for not going along and getting along) stands up to the developer-friendly Board of Commissioners. He calls them out when they are giving away the "quality lifestyle" we have worked so hard to maintain in this county.

Second, Pfeifer is a fiscal conservative; he's not trying to pick my pocket every chance he gets. The Board of Commissioners and The New Sixth Commissioner (1 1/2 year "interim" County Administrator, Jack Krakeel) are out of control. They're giving county employees huge raises (and cost of living and merit increases) when many Fayette taxpayers not only won't get any salary increase but are hoping they still have a job in 6 months. And, don't buy into the "we gave it to the lowest paid employees" spin. Next year, they'll implement the rest of the raises to the higher paid employees (then it gets REALLY expensive).

All of the spin about "we did everything we could to avoid a tax increase to afford the pension plan" sounds nice. But, let's face it, there is NO way to guarantee that the taxpayers won't end up having to bail the pension out. Look at what's happening in Atlanta. Who do you think is going to have to pay for that??? The taxpayers, that's who! Even worse, Lee Hearn (the purchase card cheat) said in a few candidates' forums that he is sympathetic to the county employees' interests. What do you want to bet he'd vote for more raises and other golden parachutes for his buddies?

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF EARLY VOTING AND RE-ELECT PETER PFEIFER FOR COUNTY COMMISSION POST 3.

of the Dunn regime. He is (and has not been) sitting on the board recently for the best interests of Fayette County. He is a puppet for Greg Dunn (and always will be)!

He has no independent thought as a commissioner, and must ask Greg and Harold which way he should vote on any given issue.

Bottom line is this, it is time that we give the heave-ho to the last of the Dunn cronies that still hold office here. Greg Dunn can sit at home and hope that Lynn Westmoreland runs for Governor so that Greg can throw his name into the hat for Congress. That is truly where he believes he should be. He is so arrogant and condescending.

Voting for Hearn is a vote for responsibility in this election. Don't be fooled by the propaganda spewed here by Janet Dunn, Linda Wells and Harold Bost.

BE SMART IN THIE RACE!!!!!!!

C'mon, Dal. Let's get real about this. Maxwell, Smith, Frady and Randall Johnson are the real puppet masters in this game. (How else do you explain Horgan, the political dum-dum, getting re-elected?) Hearn is not qualified to be a political leader, period. He (like dummy Horgan) will have to look to his puppet masters to decide what to do. His experience is limited to public works and transportation. That means, his knowledge base is limited and he will have to rely on other, more experienced (although I would not argue "smarter") board members for advice. How likely are they to tell him the down side of their positions?

As for the purchase card issue, Hearn may not have had his hands on the bad behavior but subordinates don't do what they don't think they can get away with. And nobody is stupid enough to fool with money (a potentially criminal act) if they don't think their boss is either going to condone what they did or is too dumb to figure it out. Either way, Hearn doesn't come out of it as a shining star worthy of being a county commissioner.

Third, I heard something about him using sick leave in violation of county policy. You know, the Friday Flu? Eye-wink How's he going to have any credible authority over county employees when he was AWOL on money management and flaunting the rules?

Fourth, he cannot overcome the potential conflict of interest between his current employer and county if there is a grant opportunity the for which both counties want to compete, I, as a taxpayer, cannot trust him to put his full-time employment at risk to protect my tax dollars.

VOTE FOR TRUE FISCAL CONSERVATISM --

RE-ELECT PETER PFEIFER TO COUNTY COMMISSION POST 3.

We will take this under advisement.

Now is the time for all registered voters to be heard - even if you did not vote in the Primary, you can vote in the runoff. Early voting is going on this week and election day is Tues, August 5th. You will have an opportunity to vote for Fayette County Commissioner, Post 3 and the Probate Judge.

I STRONGLY recommend voting for Peter Pfeifer for the Commissioner's seat. He has the experience, the citizen's best interest is his motive, and he is not a "yes man" who is going to go along with the rest who are dragging us down the drain piece by piece. Most recently, the billboard issue. Pfeifer was the only one who voted against it.

As for Dalmation claiming that Peter Pfeifer is a puppet of Dunn's - you don't know what you are talking about. Yes, they are friends and yes, they agree on many issues, but not all. You obviously don't know Pfeifer. He has never been Dunn's puppet, and never will be anyone's puppet.

One could just as easily see Hearn as a puppet of Smith, Maxwell, etc. Why do you think they are all working so hard to get him elected? They don't want Pfeifer standing in their way, alerting the public to everything they are trying to slip by. They want their man, Hearn. The man that will sit there and agree with everything they want to do - no questions asked.

Peter Pfeifer does not need me to go on and on - his experience and his actions speak for themselves. He has worked hard to gain your trust and will not let you down. I have every confidence that the citizens of Fayette County will do the right thing, and the smart thing by voting for Peter Pfeifer.

It is in the best interst of this county to make sure Peter Pfeifer continues to serve us as County Commissioner.

How can you say vote for Hearn for responsibilty? What about his abuse of the credit card when he was employed with Fayette County? That is not responsibility. Why is he no longer employed by Fayette County? Also, working for another county would be a conflict of interest, in my humble opinion.

Submitted by Dalmation195 on Mon, 07/28/2008 - 4:43pm.

Lee Hearn never "abused" the credit card system that had been put in place. He purchased items needed for the daily operation of the public works department. While some of those items were very expensive, they were necessary for the day to day operation of the department. Furthermore, those purchases were authorized by the county administer, at that time.

You guys keep dredging up issues from the past and then distorting them for political gain. This is all the slanderous statements that Harold Bost sent out. Once again, the Greg Dunn team.

If you will recall, Greg Dunn (despite a considerable amount of money spent by both Dunn and Bost) has lost two races here in Fayette County. We could really start to call them the "Council on local relations." Dunn, Wells, Bost and soon Pfeifer are gone.

If we are going to throw it up against the wall, it will stick better if what you are throwing is the truth.

Herb Frady may be the "Architect", but Peter Pfeifer will soon be the "Departed."

Lee Hearn has been endorsed by Randall Johnson along with man y other elected officials from the Fayette County Area. In addition to the elected officials, many business leaders here in this county see that Lee is the best candidate for moving the county forward in the RIGHT direction.

VOTE SMART ----- LEE HEARN

The fact that less than 25% of the registered voters turned out for the primary, says loads about the state of the electorate.

An electorate that neglects their civic responsibilities will get a government controlled by and for special interest.

So, get ready citizens for a county that caters to these interests, including builders, billboards, and industrial developers. Our county is going the way of all surrounding counties to our north.

We have only ourselves to blame for the coming mass movement of people out of this county in the next two years and beyond. They will be looking for what we once had here, low crime, good schools, and controlled growth. What’s left behind will be the rubble of our neglect.

I will vote for Pfeifer but if elected he will be overwhelmed by the special interests that elected the current group of commissioners. All purchased with our tax money.

It is time (it may actually be past time) for the voters of Fayette County to wake up and look at what is going on around them. Our county is changing rapidly and the commission has not been cognizant of that change. The same can be said for Fayetteville and PTC. The voters have to encourage candidates that do not view change as some sort of evil. "The way we always done it" is not longer a sufficient defense for standing still. Keep the faith

How can Mr. Pfiefer claim to have the best interests of our citizens in mind and be a fiscal conservative when he votes to carry out lawsuits against other parts of our County government. The lawsuit against the sheriff cost $226,000+ of our tax dollars.
See the Citizen article below and decide for yourself.

Having one branch of government in a lawsuit against another branch of government is not necessarily a bad thing. The real question is did the lawsuit have merit. Was Mr. Pfiefer supporting the notion of protecting the taxpayer against a governmental department that is out of control? Whose job is it to execute fiscal oversight of the Sheriff's department? The Sheriff, I wouldn't think this too independent, would you? Who raises and allocates funds to the Sheriff's department? The Commission, through the taxing and budgeting process. So, why is it they can't question how the Sheriff does business on the behalf of the citizens? Why is it our Sheriff's department can't follow a bidding process that insures the integrity of the Sheriff's department? Purchasing guidelines not followed, assets sold and not recorded properly, is it simply mismanagement? More importantly, why would the Sheriff's department NOT want to address the commissions' concerns about issues such as these? Why did it have to come to a lawsuit? Is it just "turf", or is it something more? Oversight is not a bad thing, is it? What possible objection could the Sheriff's department have to this? It's not their money, it’s our money. Someone should be watching how they spend it and manage it. It’s called accountability.

BTW, your comment seems to be off the topic of civic involvement and where we're going as a county and a place to live. Thanks.

I had lunch yesterday with two Fayette Republicans that I consider to be uber-conservatives, and asked them both who they favored in the upcoming Fayette Commission runoff election. I was and am leaning towards Pfeiffer, but they didn't know that.

I was suprised not at their choice, but the vehemence that backed up that choice. They were both rabidly anti-Hearn, calling him a big government RINO (Republican in Name Only). This got my attention because this was the first time I'd heard this charge thrown against Hearn...truthfully, I know very little about this guy Hearn other than he was involved in that credit card scandal that cost him his job and also that he was nice to Git Real (both of which imply poor judgment...okay, one of them does, MAYBE two). My lunch companions were of the opinion that if Hearn were to be elected, the only three phrases that would come from his mouth for the next four years would be "Yes, Mr. Frady!", "No, Mr. Frady!" and "Right away, Mr. Frady!".

Can anyone give me a good reason to vote for Lee Hearn?

Or Pfeifer. Who cares? The big 3 are going to run the show and the winner of this race and Horgan will have no power at all.

I may stay home. I love those races where there is a 10% turnout and the winner gets 100 more votes than the other guy and he declares a mandate.

I know I'l eventually talk myself into voting, but I'm not excited about this one race.

If Peter gets in there at least the pot will get stirred. Other than that why bother? Oh yeah. I forgot about the Probate run-off between the guy who is tired of being a lawyer and the democrat.

I never miss an election. Yet, I'm struggling to even force myself to vote this run-off.

I can give you several reasons to vote for Lee Hearn. But, first let’s look at the wording you and BOLO intentionally used in your postings in hopes of guiding unwary voters in your direction. It’s obvious that you aren’t “curious about what other people think” and you weren’t trying to correctly identify Lee by saying he’s so and so. You were trying to continue promoting outright lies about him in the same way the strategically-timed nastygram mailout from the Bost/Dunn/Wells camp did just prior to July 15. We, the more-savvy-than-you-would-like-for-us-to-be-voters, knew who NOT to vote for then and we still do…NOT Pfeiffer. Sorry sniffles and BOLO, your posting is obviously an attempt to do damage to the Hearn campaign and promote your own candidate. It’s certainly not to find out who the best candidate is.

Now, in case you or anyone else who might happen to read your drivel really wants to know the truth, I would suggest you read Mr. Hearn’s response to the p-card accusation either in the Letter to the Editor here in The Citizen or in last Wednesday’s editions of the Fayette Daily News and Today in Peachtree City. He clearly and fully explained his use of the p-card and how he was directed by his superior (Cofty) to use it to keep things running smoothly. He DID NOT lose his job because of some “credit card scandal”. He’s NOT a “credit card cheater”. When an employee loses a job because of credit card misuse in a public position, people know about it immediately, usually from the TV news. You don’t have to wait a year or two to hear it from some misinformed, malcontent in a blog in the local paper. It’s time to leave this dead horse alone.

You also need to know Lee Hearn is his own man, not somebody else’s yes man. For example, he chose to protect a long-term employee’s job (who he had already disciplined) after being given two very unfair choices by his superior (Venice). To his own detriment, he chose the least injurious option to the employee. This situation may have been a deciding factor in resigning from his position of 10+ years at Fayette County and his desire to run commissioner.

I have known Lee Hearn for 25 years and he has always been a hardworking man of unquestionable integrity and character. He has worked tirelessly during this campaign to get to know as many Fayette residents as possible and, in that time, has not stooped to return the mudslinging that has been targeted at him. He has a genuine interest in the future of Fayette County and will work to ensure its well-being.

VOTE FOR LEE HEARN ON AUGUST 5TH IF YOU TRULY CARE ABOUT PRESERVING WHAT HAS MADE FAYETTE COUNTY A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE AND WORK.

Let's wipe the spittle off your chin, dear.

Now you seem to be a very partisan supporter of Lee Hearn, and I can appreciate that. I was simply asking a very straightforward question: Can you give me a reason to vote for Lee Hearn? I'm sorry, but "technically, he did nothing wrong with his county credit card" is not going to motivate me to vote for him. Rightly or wrongly, Hearn will forever be identified with the sloppy (BUT NOT ILLEGAL) credit card purchase policies of the last decade. They've since been tightened up. If Hearn tried his shenanigans nowadays, he'd be in jail.

I suppose that I should have made it clear about my convo with my uber-Republican friends. Truthfully, I was taking great pains to NOT identify them... as one of them is (or maybe was) a high muckety-muck in the local Republican power structure. This guy, as long as I've known him, had NEVER violated "Reagan's 11th Commandmant" ("Speak no ill of a fellow Republican") yet here he was trashing Mr. Hearn seven ways to Sunday. Yes, I was very surprised.

Maybe you could try again and give me some SPECIFICS as to why I should vote for Hearn. "He's a nice guy" also doesn't cut it with me.

All in all too much mismanagment for my taste, too much explaining to do in his behalf.

You vote for him, and I will cancel your vote at my polling place. We'll see who comes out the better man based on the rest of the county's citizens (those that choose to vote that is).

Sniffles5, There is no good reason to vote for Hearn. So in a word, it's a NO. Pfeiffer outshines Hearn by miles.
More than likely, in a few years, we also will be looking at a deficit in our budget here in Fayette County. Why these commissioner's would vote for this New Pension Plan is beyond reason.
What are they thinking?
