90% OF DEPUTIES SAY BARRY BABB FOR SHERIFF

By: Captain America

Well I've held my tongue, (or keypad), long enough. Tomorrow is the big day. Barry Babb has run the most gracious, respectful, and cleanest campaign ever. Who else has deputies standing beside him on the courthouse square, sticking their necks out on the chopping block, holding "Barry Babb for Sheriff" signs, and waving to passing motorist, all the while knowing that their jobs will probably be gone if Barry looses, for doing so? These deputies care about this county and community so much that the intense passion running through them reveals itself by their actions in standing up for what they believe. I am one of these deputies. I quit a job where I made a lot more money in order to serve my community. After 9/11, I took a hard look at myself and asked myself, what have I ever done for my country? I didn't serve in the military, like I wish I had, so what could I do now to attempt to make up for it, even a little bit. I then thought, maybe serving locally as a police officer, and trying to keep our community safe, would be a start. So at 42 years old decided to put myself through the police academy in order to come to work in Fayette County, where I live. I worked during the day and went to Clayton Regional Law Enforcement Academy at night, for 7 months, and graduated number 1 in my class, and was lucky enough to be hired on by Captain Barry Babb. I love my job and would go on welfare and do it for free if I had to. I endorse Barry Babb for Sheriff of this great county because I believe in him, and his ethics, and his leadership, and if he the election does not go our way, and Barry Babb goes to another agency I will go with him. I have nothing bad to say about any of the other candidates, but I have everything good to say about Barry Babb and I hope you will vote Barry Babb for Sheriff. As my motto has always been, " FAYETTE COUNTY HOO RAA".

A race well ran by a man who does what's right equeals a win. I hope my fellow officers will join me and move forward. I am sure there will be changes. Some we will agree with, others we won't. All and all we will all come out ahead. Regardless of what Obama may say, people useualy don't like change. While we are waiting for Wayne to come back and start the transition let's not be stirring the stink pot. From what I've seen the last few days most everyone is getting along great. Some are a little worried. Others are still a little upset that their candidate didn't win. But it's nothing we can't move beyond with time. However there is one captian who needs to keep his opinion to himself. I don't believe that Wayne needs you to be his spokesperson. You are not helping. Your guys don't like it and your not helping our patrol guys either. Your intentions may be good but you are coming across as if you think your going to be Chief Deputy. Relax and just let this flow. Well, enough said. See Ya.

Thanks for your service to our community. I'm glad to see we have deputies here in Fayette who can conduct themselves with dignity and respect. It's unfortunate that you can't support the candidate of your choice without being subjected to the childish name calling and ridicule that you have received on this blog.

It seem the Sheriff's Office has some serious office politics going on and ALL the departments need to work together and support each other. Hopefully Sheriff Hannah can bring everyone together and the negative posts that are from his supporters stop. It doesn't look good for him or the department. Can't we all just get along?

What happened to your 90%?

Oh that's, right even people that don't work for the Sheriff's office were allowed to vote. DARN!

I guess this means that 90% of the Sheriff's employees were WRONG.

Do 90% of the Sheriff's employees even live in Fayette County?

No, most of the deputies don't live in Fayette County. They can't afford to. Sad, isn't it?

I just wanted to personal say that everything is going to be ok. I know it’s going to be hard to turn the video camera on during calls for service and traffic stops. Although your 70’s porn look is not becoming is this day in age. I am pretty sure Sheriff Hannah will allow you to keep your hairspray and brush inside your patrol vehicle. It’s not a violation of the S.O.P. You know the big tan binder that holds up your coffee table at home. It doesn’t have color pictures in it but the reading is useful. At least now you will have access to your full clothing allowance. Take advantage of it by replacing your “CHIPS” style uniform for something a little more comfortable.

Congratulations on graduating at the top of your police academy class. However, I would still recommend that you receive further training in the area of Georgia Law. As law enforcement officers, we should be knowledgeable in this area. Watching “COPS” on Saturday night doesn’t count. Perhaps you should just take it upon yourself to write “non-process” in the remarks section of every citation that you issue. That way the courts won’t have to do it for you.

I hope that you are now aware that there is no Georgia statute that allows us to write citations for expired drive out tags. There is code section for this but due your homework first. Maybe you should have called for back-up on that one. Isn’t that the way “A Shift Rolls”? Or could it have been that your firearm was already drawn so you didn’t feel it was necessary?

By the way, why don’t you join the military? Then you earned the right to say “HOO RAA”!

Well Captain America is retiring his cape. There are too many obsessed fans out there, that are paying a little too much attention to him.

Yes its true that the candidate that I supported didn't win. It is my constitutional right to support a candidate for office. You can look at my blogs, (all three of them including this one), and see that I never posted anything negative about any of the other candidates, only positive things about Barry Babb.

As far as the hairspray goes, it can also be used as a less leathal weapon if my OC spray gives out. And on the S.O.P. thing, my S.O.P. is in a black binder. Keep up with the times. The uniform is company issue so I have no control over that.

O.k. out of 330 tickets I wrote in the last two years I made a mistake on one. I'll take that, but I'm man enough to wear it. I give a lot of verbal warnings because I believe that citizens deserve a break sometimes, and if I can get my message over to them with a friendly verbal warning, then mission accomplished.

Come ride with me sometime and I'll show you what its like to chase two fleeing felons through the woods by yourself, after a chase into Fulton County, and take both into custody, and clear up 12 felonies by doing so. Then you can feel like you are watching cops too.

Sheriff Elect Hannah asked Barry Babb to stay at the department and Barry asked me to stay. See you Monday.

Oh yea, and for the blogger that said I was stupid for saying I would go on welfare and do my job for free. The welfare thing was just a figure of speach. Due to the fact that my family business helped build this county for the last 5 decades, and we saved our pennies all along, I would and could do my job for free without the welfare, not out of stupidity, but out the spirit of serving my community.

As I would have said if my candidate had of won the election, lets get back to the business of concentrating on protecting the citizens of the county. Hoo Raa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. You can write any response you want but I won't be reading it. After my three here, I'm retiring from the blogs. Oh yea, Don't hate me cause I'm beautiful, its just how I roll.

Pookey you mentioned that Captain America, should write non-process on all of his tickets that he gives out. He should not have many to correct since he only gives warnings. He might still have the same ticket book, that he started with.

More than 20 years ago, when I 1st came to work for the Sheriff's Office I never imagined a day like today would come. The day I am talking about being that Sheriff Johnson having announced his retirement and his successor being elected.

I have always respected Sheriff Johnson from the 1st time we spoke when he interviewed and hired me. As I have grown professionally, I have come to really understand the impact and reality associated with the only three questions that my interview consisted of; Where was I from, Where was my family from, and lastly (and probably most importantly) Can I treat people fairly? Jonesboro, Jonesboro, and absolutely were my answers.

Last night, in what was another telling moment in my professional life, I had the 2008 version of that interview relived again--this time with Sheriff Johnson's successor Lt. Colonel Wayne Hannah.

I have known Lt. Colonel Hannah as long as I have known Sheriff Johnson. I supported Lt. Colonel Hannah in the Sheriff's race for my own lengthy list of reasons. Without going through that list, my confirming moment with Lt. Colonel Hannah came last night.

As he and his supporters were celebrating his victory at the end of a lengthy and brutal campaign cycle, his thoughts were on today, tomorrow and the next 4 years of tomorrows. During the midst of this humbling experience, he had the presence of mind to have me remind the other members of the Traffic Enforcement Division that gloating is not right and that he would not tolerate it.

The worst part of this campaign for me has been sitting here listing to, and reading, the untrue statements being bandied about on the blogs and knowing that they were not true. I want to make a distinction between differences of opinion and untrue statements. Lt. Colonel Hannah has never minded the fact that others might support another candidate than him; he only took exception with those that spread untrue comments.

Captain America, Grits, McGerkin88, and others who took exception with Lt. Colonel Hannah's possible election... Last night the voters spoke (albeit only 28%) and gave the nod to Lt. Colonel Hannah. Despite all the recriminations, it is now on him to demonstrate he is who he has claimed to be; an honest and non-vindictive person. We didn't have a mass exodus and I don't think we will. Last night Lt. Colonel Hannah told us that now is the moment when we must begin to move forward together and do what the public expects us to do--protect our community and keep our people safe.

For those bloggers who did not know or have an opinion of us until this series of blogs from various factions within the Sheriff’s Office came to be, I can only say this… I feel like a parent who has invited new acquaintances into our home for a visit only to have our kids throw a rip-roaring temper tantrum—embarrassed beyond words. We know how to behave and we normally due. You deserve better and we will do better. Thank you for being patient.

Differences of opinion aside, this will be my last transparently anonymous "blog."

To quote Edward R. Murrow "We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty. When the loyal opposition dies, I think the soul of America dies with it."

Captain America, Grits, Abby, et all... Good luck and good night!

and eyes and ears are fine tuning. Two fine men are back at work today, (Babb and Mindar). They better be treated with the up most respect from you and all deputies. Randall, Hannah, eyes and ears are watching and listening. Some of us have been awakened.

They are all good men. I don't know if the best man won, but I voted for him and he was the one with over 50% of the votes. If Barry Babb can get over it, why can't you?

Submitted by McGerkin88 on Fri, 07/18/2008 - 11:58am.

the "good 'ole boy" system played the biggest role in this election. If you think that Hannah won, take another look at the statistics. The proponents; low voter turnout, apathy was very much the cause of Babb and Simmons not having the numbers. So, the good ‘ole boy system won, this time.

Hopefully, more of us will hang in there rather than contemplating moving out of here. Again, eyes and ears are tuning in.

Spin it anyway you want, the fact remains that Hannah got over 50% of the vote, no matter what your "good ole boy" system did, did the "good ole boys turn away voters? BTW I voted for Babb but unlike you I ain't crying cause my guy lost or blaming it on the "good ole boys".

how I stepped out of my own family dynamics in support of Simmons and Hayes. You would be shocked to learn my true identity and my staunch family background. I come from a long line of good 'ole boy antics. 50.33% aint say'n much, but its a win for Hannah. "did the "good ole boys turn away voters?" yes, indeed it did. Voters were more confused then ever. "I ain't crying cause my guy lost or blaming it on the "good ole boys"." Hutch, you should be.

BTW, read the Fayette Daily News for the Hollis Harris letter. Read the article posted yesterday of the Hannah quotes. Read what our new sheriff talks about, the crime in FC, sounds just like Simmons. You tell me that Mr. Harris wasn't part of the problem.

So, I ask you and others to keep those eyes and ears tuned in. It ain't over, the truth is just becoming to be transparent.

Rosebud,
There is no jealousy there, the productivity of Traffic far exceeds anything that patrol has been able to do. DTF is just worried because an audit may be coming and there is some actual accountability in the future.

So what good did it do for a bunch of deputies with the sheriff's office to show their true colors? None!! In fact, they should feel pretty stupid right about now. All that time spent trying to make Hannah look bad with false rumors and negative comments has backfired and blew up in everyone's faces. Gee, I guess that means that DTF won't get the office they want and some of the patrol deputies will actually have to treat people with respect and use their camera systems! Gee, what's this world coming too? By the way Captain America, you need to go wherever Captain Babb goes...out of law enforcement!!!

You also said that you graduated number 1 in your class, and what title are you (Deputy). Boy you really got something out of being first. Oh never mind, you did get something,(HOW TO BE A BIG BROWN NOSER), but where has that gotten you nowhere.
You also said that if Babb goes to another agency that you will go. You being in law enforcement, your suppose to be a leader not a follower. Once your a follower you will always be one. So hurry up and leave.

I just wish that this election would be over.

Submitted by Abby on Tue, 07/15/2008 - 12:49am.

I don't know about 90% but there is definantly an overwhelming majority in the SO that support Babb. But lets not get into that.

Let's look at it this way:

First, Hannah agreed not to answer questions posted by the citizen and whether you agree or disagree with that, he broke his word to the other candidates. We can argue technicalities as to the wording of their statement to the editor but it still boils down to him looking for a loophole that would allow him to break the agreement.
Second, he can't answer a forum question about his campain funds and spending yet he intends to manage millions of dollars in budget.
Third, he clearly states that he will protect his wifes position even though he would be in direct violation of a state law prohibiting this.
Fourth, there apparently is some question as to relations with female subordinates in his past.
Given this information I have to lean toward the so called "Bible Thumper" with no know skeletons in his past. And I might also add that Bible thumping (if thats what you want to call it) ain't such a bad thing in my opinion.
I also suggest that we look at the inovative way he has run his campaign, winning parade floats, airplanes pulling banners, Dot signs, and scores of people working intersections throughout the county. His campain alone shows us that he is a Man who can bring new ideas to the department.

I also believe that the deputies on the square speak volumes, At least they are not hiding behind screen names on these blogs!!!!!

VOTE BARRY BABB

"First, Hannah agreed not to answer questions posted by the citizen and whether you agree or disagree with that, he broke his word to the other candidates."

That is NOT what the Sheriff candidates letter said. Try re-reading it slowly, next time.

"Third, he clearly states that he will protect his wifes position even though he would be in direct violation of a state law prohibiting this."

Exactly what state law would that be? The one the expressly excludes "(F) Every elected county official and every elected member of a local board of education;"?

See ptcmom34, I think you're WRONG about Mr. Hannah

Then again, don't bother. Your reading comprehension skills will no doubt fail you once again.

From Barry Babb's own website, his priorities are, and I quote:

"Barry’s passions are in order, God, family, career, and community."

Now I have to admit the first time I read this it appeared that Barry valued order over God, but I later realized he'd just done a poor job punctuating that sentence (This is forgiveable, Babb attended Fayette County high school so his grammar education was most likely a bit spotty).

Nonetheless, it is interesting to see a public servant who admits that his career has a higher priority over service to the community.

Submitted by NeedtoKnow on Tue, 07/15/2008 - 3:49pm.

Since his career *is* serving the community, exactly how would you have wanted that worded? Besides, it didn't actually say "career, serving the community" but "career, and community."

Submitted by fayettenative on Tue, 07/15/2008 - 4:23am.

I'd like to add a fifth item to your list above.

Fifth, during the recent forum at the Fayette County Library, when asked "How serious is the gang problem in Fayette County and do you agree with Sheriff Randall Johnson's comment that crime in Fayette is not so bad?" After giving a non-answer to the first part of the question regarding gangs, Hannah's response to the 2nd part of the question was , "and I'm not going to comment on the second part of the question."

WHAT?? He's not going to comment? I understand that Hannah just got the endorsement from Johnson, but come on at least agree with him or agree to disagree!!

My choice...Barry Babb!!

Submitted by Sick of Fascists on Mon, 07/14/2008 - 9:45pm.

support Wayne Hannah. They say that Hannah is reasoned, respected, fair, cool under fire, and has a high degree of integrity. Babb has a short fuse and holds grudges. Mindar is an idiot. Simmons hasn't the experience with Fayette to have earned the job.

Submitted by daveskeys on Tue, 07/15/2008 - 4:45pm.

I didn't know any of the candidates so I went to the forums, read about all of them on their websites. All seem like good men. However, I wanted to hear from the Sheriff deputies themselves. Over the course of a couple weeks I asked 13 Sheriff's deputies and all stated that Babb should be the pick when I asked, "What candidate do you feel would be a great replacement for Johnson?"
So I got 100% but in a much different way. Some were VERY passionate in their comments regarding their support for Babb. As a business leader myself, I want my people bought it to my vision. To me it sounded very much like they truly love working for Babb and not Hannah. Just my opinion but this is why Babb got mine and my family's vote today.

Babb's campaign. I don't know where you retrieved your numbers from, but they are completely inaccurate. How much research did you conduct? Did you poll every individual in the department? Your comment suggests that you did and I know for a fact that you didn't. Many people know that you and the rest of Babb's slimy followers don't want another Sheriff that will hold all of you accountable, expect that you perform your duties with integrity, and ensure that you follow departmental policies and procedures. There are also a lot of people who already know what kind of loose division Babb runs. His men and women can't even spend their clothing allowances! You really should have kept holding your tongue!

I Hope that Hannah wins and you do leave the department. Fayette county would be a much better place to live and work without you!

I admire your loyalty to Captain Babb. He is a great guy but I have reservations about his adminstrative capabilities. Great guys can make good leaders but the position of Sheriff requires a great deal of adminstrative duties. Patrol has notoriously been out of overtime money early in budget year. New cars go unequipped for extended periods of time before being placed on the road. Then there is the whole topic of accountablity. Hannah has excelled in all these areas. I think that is the biggest fear of those supporting Babb within the Department is the accountability. Law enforcement is a profession and with that comes increased accountability. The County is facing trying times and Hannah is better equipped to lead the Department for the next 4 years. Good luck to you and Captain Babb. I only hope that whoever wins that the other will stay. I think the County needs both.

Submitted by skyspy on Mon, 07/14/2008 - 9:23pm.

In the long run most companies find it more cost effective to pay overtime than to pay full pension and health benefits to the additional employees it would take to cover shifts.

We have such little respect for our officers on the southside of town. We do not pay them what they are worth. SandySprings starts cops at a full 10,000 above what we start them at. I have heard that most of our cops have been offered jobs with better pay. Most of them stay here because they love Fayette County. That could change and if it does you and I and every taxpayer will lose here.

We need them more than they need us. Especially if the naacp keeps threatening us.

Sky,
I love your enthusiasm for law enforcement in Fayette County. The County is truly at a crossroads. I moved down from Clayton County 15 years ago to escape the crime and the destruction of the community. The time has come for Fayette County to stand and fight. The destruction happens very quickly I have seen it. A high turnover rate with law enforcement will not help in that fight. Cops do not choose the profession to get rich, but stability in earnings and leadership are a must. My choice for Sheriff is Hannah because I believe he can provide both and take a tough got get um stance in protecting the community. Good Luck to both, I predict a runoff between Hannah and Babb. I hope we can keep both regardless of who wins.

Submitted by skyspy on Mon, 07/14/2008 - 10:01pm.

I hope we keep all 3 Hannah Babb and Mindar. We can't afford to lose any of them.

I moved here as clayton fell to crime also. White flight took off to rural "hick" Fayette( at the time that is what it was) We have grown. But the criminals and the naacp have ruined clayton too. So now they want to move here to ruin this county. We need an ordinance like they have in Kennesaw. If they knew that every homeowner was mandated by law to protect themselves they would think twice. Crime dropped by 89% in Kennesaw when they were all required to have guns for self-protection.

It is a hard choice between Hannah and Babb. I like them both. Like I said I hope the taxpayers win for a change.

As I have said before we already gave the naacp one county we shouldn't have to give them another one. Just because they have made a complete mess of clayton doesn't mean we should give them a second chance here. Let them clean up the mess they made of Clayton.

Submitted by skyspy on Mon, 07/14/2008 - 9:09pm.

I agree. Barry has run the cleanest campaign. The worst thing I could find about him is that he is "too christian" I'll take it. He has great ideas, and I know he will hit the ground running without missing a beat. Plus he will have a 110% support from loyal deputies.

I know that most of you have been offered better jobs if the election doesn't go the way you want it too. Thank you for your service to Fayette County. We can't afford to lose any of you. We need you more than you need us. I don't know who you are, but thanks for making this a safe, great place to live.

Let's hope that for a change the good people will win. I know good guys always finish last, but let's hope we change that trend tomorrow.

Thanks Captain! I agree with Spy. Some of the things that have been said by the other camp in this race trouble me. It gives one the feeling that there is a dark shadow hovering about. Especially coming from someone who is seeking to hold the top law enforcement office in our county. The good guys don't always win... but we do need to stand beside them and support them to the end.
