"Houston, we have a problem"

Dave Houston's web site says "Tax-deductible donations can be made to "Campaign to Elect Dave Houston" in the form of cash or check." The mission of his campaign is to provide ethical and fiscal responsibility to the taxpayers. Please tell me that this guy who claims to be a financial expert and wants to run the school system doesn't know that campaign contributions are not tax deductible???

dorthea apparently can not read - Houston's web site never said "tax deductible". Dorthea is just spreading bogus rumors. Maybe Dorthea is really Smola?

Dorthea was correct at the time the blog entry was created. I personally saw the "tax deductible contribution" line over at Houston's website two weeks ago. It has now been changed.

I assure you both that this was not a "bogus rumor". It appears to have been a rookie politician's honest mistake that has been corrected.

No harm, no foul.

Here's what Dave Houston's site really says:

"Donations can be made to "Campaign to Elect Dave Houston" in the form of cash or check. We are not accepting individual donations exceeding $100."

See for yourself by going to the web site. Quit spreading rumors! We have enough to figure out in this election without people putting out wrong information.

Let's see, what has Houston done? Damaged the American economy by sending jobs for Americans to India so that Fortune 100 companies can make bigger profits. He sure didn't do it save the average taxpayer any money because all I see is inflation.

Hmmm, from what I can see Janet Smola has been working to help non-profit organizations raise money to help developmentally disabled children and adults right here in our very own community.

I don't see how anybody could be as difficult as you say to make that difference okay.

If I didn't know better, I would think you are CitizenSmolla.

"Hmmm, from what I can see Janet Smola has been working to help non-profit organizations raise money to help developmentally disabled children and adults right here in our very own community."

Yeah hmmm....I read an article about the Sams school and how it started. It interviewed the Sams woman, so I think it was pretty accurate. It said most people that work there....donate...their time. And that it was built and maintained by people that really wanted to help. It gave credit to ....everyone...that had assisted...It named names...and no where was Janet Smola's name listed in the 'thank you' s....I found this very telling.

It also seems very telling that no one from that group seems to have come forth to beat her drums...Isn't that amazing?

I have noticed that you hate them so much that I don't think it's good for you. You should get help for that....

Yeah, it says that now that he already showed his ignorance. He changed it since then.

According to Dave Houston "The focus of my work is assisting Fortune 100 companies in defining their finance and accounting and human resources strategy, then implementing that strategy."

According to Google, he works for a company called Equa Terra that outsources American jobs to India. "Dave Houston possesses expertise in business offshoring. Major achievements include migrating finance processes including invoice processing, travel and expense processing and vendor management for two major financial services companies to service centers in Mumbai, India; he developed and implemented a shared services accounting function for a large multi-divisional energy company, significantly reduced the procurement costs within several different commodity groups for a major petro-chemical consortium."

HIS HUMAN RESOURCES STRATEGY IS TO SEND AMERICAN JOBS AND MONEY TO INDIA.

We live in a global marketplace so your comment about doing business elsewhere is not especially relevant. I don't see any evidence that Houston doesn't support keeping jobs locally. I do see evidence that he understands how to use resources wisely and this is why he is a management consultant for Fortune 100 companies. In addition, it may be that this sort of perspective is just what we need to make sure that our students are educated adequately to compete in the global marketplace. We need local leaders in all our elected positions - not just the school board - who have knowledge and experience outside the Fayette County bubble. An especially relevant book on this subject is "The World is Flat" by Thomas Friedman who has won three Pulitzer Prizes for his investigative writing.

I wish someone would outsource Smola the mole-a right outta Fayette county!!!! Maybe Dave can clean up the mess that the morons on the FCBOE have created. And yes, it is a mess thanks to Janet, Terri, Lee and the former Greg Powers. Poor Marion, the lone voice of reason on the board. At least she has company now that Bob is there. I hope Fayette county comes out in droves and votes Smola & Terri right off the board!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

along with juveniles who make fun of people's names. How old are you?

I have one of her signs in my yard! I haven't seen too many Smola signs. I wonder why?

Submitted by tc on Fri, 06/27/2008 - 10:27am.

Marion Key has a track record of supporting the community and putting student needs first unlike some of the other board members who put unneeded construction projects out in the middle of nowhere ahead of student concerns.

And as long as you're nitpicking other people's blog styles, you might consider exhibiting some knowledge of English by matching your subject with the topic of your blog.

You have got to be kidding me. I guess you failed to notice the blogs when people were freaking out that she might be unopposed in this election.

At least I'm not making fun of her name. I am seriously disturbed by accusations that she behaves like a Clayton County Board of Education member. If you are worried about Fayette County, you need to be very worried about that, too.

Let me make it simple: neither have any usefulness at this point, even in a volunteer position. It's pretty bad when you have to send packing people who are performing work for free and it is a net loss. Smola at one time I thought had a clue, but maybe her husband's arrogance and ineptitude is contagious.

Key is a Clayco wanna-be meddler. Later much.

The whole board bungled the school redistricting so poorly from the start(let's hire a big buck consultant) to the middle(let's plan to violate the open meetings laws until The Citizen drops the hammer) to the end(forget that consultant and the citizen panels, let's throw some crap together at the last minute)that it's very hard to say any incumbent has earned the right to stay. That's just the recent fiasco and there is more.

Submitted by g8trgrl on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 7:58am.

The current BOE members running for re-election wasted a lot of tax payer money on the re-districting fiasco & are now going to waste a bunch of money on gas to bus kids all over town. They had the opportunity to send kids to schools near their homes, but opted against that to appease certain individuals. I would love to see the total bill for how much money they wasted on that issue. If they bungled that one, how many more issues could have been better handled. There are ways to handle the out of county students, but the BoE refuses to get aggressive on it. The people working in the front office of the schools know who is out of county & should be able to report it to the Superintendent.

Let's get some new people on the BoE, they could not possibly be any worse!

Particularly in heated local elections, it seems to make sense to look at facts. The blogs you are referring to did not appear to be factual. What is your definition of ethical and who do you think has ethics?

Anything to send the last Smola packing. Her hubby turned Tyrone into a financial train wreck. Any time Smola weighed in on any issue like boundaries it was always rude and obstinate. Her contributions to local schools? Ask the Sams School for a reference.

Anybody but Smola-- even a Loblolly Pine.

POST 3 has a candidate who will be an improvement! Vote for Carol Jensen-Linton(or Mark Aasen for that matter). Just get Marion Key out of office!

Submitted by oldbeachbear on Thu, 06/26/2008 - 8:34am.

We need a change. You are correct about the financial train wreck and the arrogance.

I heard, but don't know for a fact, that Sams School was charged some high consulting fees when most everyone else donated their time for a good cause. What were the details? This is a time that it might be good for someone to share the details.

I am not a Smola fan and will not vote for her. However, let's be careful with the unsubstantiated innuendo about someone and how they earn a living. Smola is a professional fund raiser for goodness sakes. If the Sams School wants to pay her for her services isn't that between them?

Submitted by tc on Fri, 06/27/2008 - 10:01am.

What is her fundraising experience? Isn't she in charge of the great georgia airshow?

Submitted by CitizenBlogger on Fri, 06/27/2008 - 10:30am.

I just looked at the Great Georgia Airshow website. She's listed as the Marketing Director.

Two jobs & they both help our community. Plus, a school board member... another service to the community.

I don't know her. I just don't see anything that wonderful about Dave Houston other than he has an axe to grind because he got mad about his neighborhood being redistricted to Bennett's Mill. I found an archived letter on this website where he said that very thing.

I hope Fayette voters won't be too quick to support one candidate over the other just for personality reasons without looking at actual accomplishments that benefit Fayette County.

Remember that when you have to talk to somebody in India to find out why your kid's bus is running late.

I know from a friend of a friend that she works for ExceptionalOps, a service for developmentally disabled adults. Check out www.exceptionalops.com. They've done wonderful things for the people they help.
