Obama T-shirts: About as "cute" as cancer

Main Stream's picture

This has been all over the AJC and local news about the owner of Mulligan's in Marietta selling a t-shirt with the Curious George monkey character, refrencing 'Obama in '08' The owner says he thinks they are 'cute.'

Check out the picture of Mulligan's sign as well... just lovely!

Wow, thanks for making Marietta the laughing stock of Georgia, Mike!

I'M SO CUTE

Was it ever mentioned to you angry citizens that those shirts were actually a GIFT for Mr. Norman and that there were only 42 shirts to begin with? Please. Get a life. There are so many more important issues at hand than a t-shirt!

Submitted by bssmstr1 on Thu, 05/15/2008 - 11:08am.

No one seemed to mention that ALL the money he is making off the shirts is going to charity! Idiots. Get a life

Submitted by sageadvice on Tue, 05/20/2008 - 1:04pm.

Yeah, right.
This man of t-shirts is a peerfect example of Christian brotherhood!
His intentions from the beginning had NOTHING to do with race.

SADLY, the MDA denied his contribution to their charity, but still, Mr. Norman will find a charity to donate the proceeds to.

Submitted by bowser on Fri, 05/16/2008 - 12:22pm.

Actually, bassmaster1 (silent b), the Marietta paper reported that the bar owner claimed he was going to give the proceeds to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. But when the MD folks read that, they immediately sent him a certified letter saying don't bother, we don't want it.

Maybe the Feed-a-Skinhead Foundation will take it.

I'll gladly spend the money for the blazing household charity fund and stimulate the economy at the same time. Laughing out loud

I agree with you, most people only look for the bad. There are a lot of things I don’t agree with. But I am from the Old School. You don’t talk about sex, politics, and religion in public, or on the blogs. So much for today’s ethics.

PS
You have 20 more friends than I have.

I am from the "New School" I guess. I only wish I was still in high school so I could wear one of these to class. Oh the look on the tree hugging pinko teachers face. I guess wearing one around town one day will have to be sufficient.

Socks, shirts, pants, ties and clean hair cuts.
And the teachers had yardsticks as big as 2 X 4’s, and they did little measuring with them in those days.
Boy am I dating myself

"I guess wearing one around town one day will have to be sufficient."

Please purchase one and wear it while walking down Campbellton Road in South Fulton, and then let us know the response you get, wearing it in public.

Perhaps some will consider your dare now that our governor has signed the law making it legal for licensed gun owners to "carry" in public places.

Submitted by bssmstr1 on Thu, 05/15/2008 - 11:59am.

Fine with me. I'll stay in a public park, or resturaunt, or on Marta, now that I can carry there. Smiling

when I was so easily entertained. The box that they come in may be pretty interesting for you also. The good thing about the heights that this humor reaches is that it easy to step over without stepping in it.

Well, I may be in the minority here, but the only issue I see with this T-shirt is that it infringes upon the "curious george" author's copyrighted works.

Parody is a protected form of political speech and has been for years. The simple fact that Republicans can only find crude "wink nudge" racially-tinged material with which to parody Obama speaks to their inability to create quality satire. (Not that "Chimpy McFlightsuit" was "high art" for the Democrats!)

Republicans seem to flounder more than a little bit when it comes to making fun of the opposition. Take a look at the "autobiographies" parody that I wrote last week (HERE) and then look at the Republican retorts from the racist Beavis and USArmyBratwurst....Republican humor is just not funny!

Submitted by USArmybrat on Thu, 05/15/2008 - 1:11pm.

Man, I am so glad to be included in your little circle of "friends and foes". Sorry you didn't think my humor was funny but I was wanting you to have one that reflected you, too!(Loving America while hating Conservatives) Liberals like you just don't have much of a sense of humor about themselves, I guess. Oh, and I love bratwurst, by the way!

Glad you like her. She's too small to be a cockroach, she's an insignificant gnat. Look how she runs around in circles. I've named her Lilly.

I don't plan on voting for obama, but the t-shirt is over the top.

RetiredArmy makes a good point, why are we only offended when a democrat is made fun of.

No matter which party you support some jokes are over the top.

Submitted by bowser on Thu, 05/15/2008 - 10:53am.

I daresay that if jc watts was running for the gop nomination and the same t shirt surfaced at a georgia bar, it would draw the same condemnations.

and for those below who don't understand the difference, calling bush a chimp may be juvenile and stupid but it is not a racial epithet.

You are correct about the shirt. I don't think anyone should make a shirt like that. I think the person that did it should have to stop selling them.

I made the comment about President Bush, I think it does not matter who it is it should not be done.

The shirt is offensive.

I don't plan on voting for Obama. I do believe in being fair on both sides.

I don't plan to vote for Obama, but the shirt IS offensive. However, the First Amendment protects this guy just as much as it protects Larry Flynt, Al Franken, Rush Limbaugh and every other person who pushes the envelope of good taste for a quick buck or cheap publicity.

The good news is the First Amendment does not protect this guy from a law suit from the original artist for copyright violation.

It's funny that people pretend that there's not a history of racism in the south. I've grown up here and I can't count the times I heard racists compare black people, and interracial people, to monkeys. This shirt is offensive and blantantly racist.

I hope everyone that is outraged about these shirts showed the same outrage when President Bush was mocked as Chimpy McShrub and every other vile name or image used.

I am glad that you spoke up and said your comments about the shirt.

Also, you are correct when President Bush was mocked as Chimpy McShrub and every vile name. They still mock President Bush.

If you have read online much, you will notice the liberals love to attack conservatives.

I don't mind, I know what the truth is.

Sometimes it can be quiet funny, because they are adults and act like kids and call you names and insult you because you stood up for President Bush.Laughing out loud

Thank you for your time served and keeping us safe.

Maybe one day some of the people in the military that make rude comments will learn respect for our President. Some only support the one that they voted for. Someone like that should not even be in the military.

Isn't there a rule against offending anyone over anything in our Constitution?

If the shirt had been directed at anyone but a Dem, not a peep would have heard about it.

Submitted by thenatural on Wed, 05/14/2008 - 2:51pm.

First let me say that I do not care for Obama's politics and will not vote for him. That being said, this is over the top. Obama has enough baggage to make him a poor candidate. This kind of thing is just not helpful to anyone. I guess there is a fine line between "cute" and just plain stupid.

Submitted by Spyglass on Wed, 05/14/2008 - 3:42pm.

I just think we go overboard to protect some in our society. IF Chris Rock had made up the shirt, all would have been fine.

Submitted by Davids mom on Tue, 05/20/2008 - 1:26pm.

The reality is Chris Rock would have been in big trouble if he had made up the shirt. He's not a fool.

Submitted by clh3511 on Thu, 05/22/2008 - 9:45am.

Chris Rock is not as available as Mr. Norman. With the team of lawyers and security, he wouldnt be near as fun to pick on.
