The Department of TransportationMost folks believe that the state Department of Transportation is a mess. This morning's AJC (12/13) indicated that the DOT has almost 300 current projects and a backlog of almost 9000 projects!! Much of this backlog is due to the fact that the Georgia Legislature treats the DOT budget like the Peachtree City "developer elite" treats the PTC budget, i.e. their own personal piggybank. The DOT made huge strides this year by bringing in an outsider to clean up this mess. Transportation professional Gena Abraham beat out the Legislature's hand-picked political candidate by a 7-6 vote. This rebuff was taken as a personal insult by Glenn Richardson, speaker of the House. He's throwing a Bob Lenox-class hissy fit and has indicated he will gut the DOT bureaucracy in January. To do this, Richardson will need a pliable Republican majority to do his bidding. I am of the opinion that Ramsey will do anything to continue to curry favor with the political elite, and Steve Brown will do the right thing (not necessarily the popular thing).
