The McIntosh Symphony Orchestra

Sniffles's picture

Last night was the very first time that the McIntosh Symphonic Strings and the McIntosh Symphonic Band ever played together as a complete orchestra.

What a great night!

Good thing the fire marshal wasn't there or he'd have shut the event down. I never understood the phrase "packed to the rafters" before last night...people were taking up every last bit of space! I estimate there must have been 500+ people in the auditorium.

A great turnout for a great orchestra!

Man, why'd they start doing all the good stuff right after I graduated? I'm sure it must have been great! I just wish they had done something like that while I was still there. I just finished a semester with the Georgia State Symphony Orchestra. I had a great time with it, and I'm sure the McIntosh students probably have a great time with their group, too.

So, anybody that was there, please answer this question: What did they play? Thanks!

Hi Mick,

They played a medley of Christmas songs with 6 (!!!) tempo changes. Lot of very grim looking faces in the orchestra trying to keep up...that many tempo changes couldn't have been easy.

They finished up with Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik which they did very very well on. I've heard them perform that individually as a band and strings, but harnessed as a full orchestra took it to an altogether different level.

Interestingly, they had to jump through hoops to get together as an orchestra. Since strings and brass always played during different school periods, they had to get permission for an "in-school field trip" to excuse kids from classes to rehearse as an ensemble.

They only had two rehearsals as a complete orchestra but did a wonderful job!

I was at the concert and it was amazing. The students played various Christmas and holiday season music. I believe the goal is to have the Concert and Orchestra bands combine for annual events. I was surprised to hear that the auditorium is only 2-years old because usage was obviously not considered by the Fayette County School Board. There are not enough seats - as with this event and several others, it is not just standing room only, but squeezed together room only. The acoustics' are so poor that the McIntosh Chorus has to hold their performances off-site.
As a McIntosh grad, you might want to join your alumni at the All-You-Can-Eat Pancake Breakfast with Santa and Friends being held this Saturday, December 15th from 7 a.m. - noon at the McIntosh Cafeteria. The bands will be performing Christmas and holiday music, ballerinas will be dancing from portions of The Nutcracker, there will be a crafts and face painting station and of course Jolly Saint Nick will be there to hear wishes and for photos. The cost is $4.00 for adults and $2.00 for children 10-years and younger. Proceeds to benefit the providing of transportation and lowering costs so that all concert and band members can take part in upcoming away performances. What a great way for the community to spend a Saturday morning Smiling
