TEACHING MATH:

Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $3.58. The counter girl took my $4.00 and I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to
her.

She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies. While looking at the screen on her register, I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help.

While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there and cried.

Why do I tell you this? Because of the evolution in teaching math since the 1950s.

Teaching Math in 1950:

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100.
His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit?

Teaching Math in 1960:

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100.
His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80.
What is his profit?

Teaching Math in 1970:

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100.
His cost of production is $80.. Did he make a profit?

Teaching Math in 1980:

A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100.
His cost of production is $80 and his profit is $20.
Your assignment: Underline the number 20.

Teaching Math in 1990:

A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes?
(There are no wrong answers.)

Teaching Math in 2007:

Un ranchero vende una carretera de madera por $100. El cargo de
produccion es $80. Cuantas tortillas se puede comprar?

than shutting down is when they guess and make incorrect change and then act as if you are calling them a liar when you point it out...... You can tell they are guessing, they get kinda glazy-eyed. I sometimes feel sorry for them since I think 'maybe he/she is at least trying'. Same result though. Bad attitude for being called on a mistake.

It has the same things in it that I learned, expect it seems to be laid out better, or maybe it's just my memory.

Your cut and paste is impressive, even comical, I've been seeing it for years, but it's not the norm for kids that want to learn.

For years, I've had trouble getting change at fast food places.

If you think math education is so horrendous, run for the school board and do something other than post a meaningless blog about how you managed to confuse the counter help at Burger King and how perfect life was back in the '50s.

Math education really needs to be reviewed. No wonder the SAT scores are so low. This is a national problem. Years ago, second graders were taught to make change during the classroom social studies experience (managing their own community store in their classroom). Mental math was part of the curriculum - and used as 'fun' warm up activities for math lessons.

Yeah, but we kicked out those kids who couldn't pass 6th grade, trying twice, at 16! Wasted no more taxes. Now we even-out every one.
1 plus 1 can be three under explained circumstances and understanding.
Worse yet though is a paragraph that makes no sense, skipping the spelling and bad language as also being a problem.

and then shake head!

You just forgot a couple of things: the adjective before the 1990 profit scenario -- EVIL -- and the virtue of the anti-logging protests (just "trying to stop the death of the entire plane"). Just don't mention the terrorist tactics of the environmentalists, especially Greenpeace.

Also, the solution is making it a crime to use more than one square sheet of toilet paper per day. (Math: How long will one roll last?) Laughing out loud

This discussion could take up the whole school year!
