When will Principles return to Washington, DC?

State's rights were a principle of conservatism until states began to entertain legalizing gay marraige. Then, state's rights became less important, and conservatives began turning to federal government (a goverment they claimed they wanted to be smaller, presumably) to federalize via constitutional amendment the definition of marraige as heterosexual.
Up and Down votes were required for Alito and Roberts, but are not required for something as small as the war in Iraq and how to conclude it.
Democrats in the minority called the filibuster a legitimate legislative tool with respect to conservative judges, but now, democrats feel filibusters are political stunts. And I don't even need to bring up the shifting views on presidential pardons and commutations. My head is spinning from shifting sands on both sides. Does anyone know of a politician who will stand on the same principles be they majority or minority member? Should we simply flush the commode and start over with a completely new group of legislators?

I appreciate you confessing that there really isn't much difference between the two parties and the that in actuality the Democrats are just as useless as the Republicans.
