Baseball in its purest form

Took a trip up to Greenville, SC yesterday to see the West Virginia Power (featuring Sandy Creek graduate Brent Brewer) take on the Greenville Drive (a Class A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox).

There's a lot of minor league teams that play a short day trip away and the ticket and concession prices are a welcome relief from "The Ted." I am hoping to take some of these day trips this summer and report on all the parks and teams I see.

There will be stories and videos to come, but my question is this: Have you ever gone to a minor league baseball game and if so, did you ever encounter a player or players who later went on to become major leaguers and possibly superstars?

I remember going to watch the Lynn Mariners when I was growing up and seeing Oil Can Boyd pitch.

In the early 80's I had the pleasure of seeing a young pitcher for the Columbia (S.C.) Metropolitans named David Cone face a hitter from the Sumter Braves named David Justice. How cool is that? I also have gone to a few Lookouts (Chattanooga) games and about 12 or so years ago got to see Pete Rose Jr. play. Two outta Three aint bad.

I lived in a Virginia town where a "rookie" league played baseball.
A tall skinny Texan, I think he was, named Nolan Ryan was pitching in that league that year.
The sound of the fastballs into the catcher's mitt were more distinctive than any of the other pitchers.
Unless by accident, none of the rookies could hit him, but a lot of them walked. He was wild!
I heard comments such as: throwing too hard, won't make the majors---too wild!
He learned and did right well.
