Retirement

The last time we had $3.00 gasoline, tomatoes (medium to large) @ about $1.00 each, some onions even at $.75 each, good steak or roast from $6.99 to $9.99 per pound, and hamburger @ $3.00 per pound, green beans at about $4.00 for a pot full, and service technicians at $65.00 per hour, at least retired people on a fixed income after retirement could eat some dog and cat food to survive.
Not this time however. It is poisoned and the protein value is fake. Of course I'm not speaking of those 15% of retirees who were corporate executives or Airline Pilots, or Bankers, or stock managers who are retired in Bimini, or some such place.
Vacations are pretty much out since Hotels go for $200.00 to $300.00 in any place you would want to visit or see. Gas at about $60.00 every 350 miles is also tough.
Our 30,000 recently maimed and wounded soldiers have the wonderful Veterans Administration to look forward to, and then 2-3 years of rehab if they can stand in line and fill out enough paperwork for the idiots! Many of them also can retire providing they can live with someone and help buy the groceries.
Utilities are up 40% over just three years ago and will go even higher due to the oil situation.
Our national debt has climbed in the last six years from eight trillion, plus, excess, to about that same amount in the hole. About sixteen trillion shot! This has been to war, and promote a wonderful false economy based upon debt.
It would not take much for our stock market to collapse, our debts to be called in by foreign holders of the notes, and a consistent weather problem to destroy our food and water supply.
We have done practically nothing in the last six years to fight off any of this horrible stuff and we are bound to pay dearly for some of that.
Let us never elect another bunch of light weights with no ideas to office.

What gives here? I almost wrote this blog earlier this week on my own blog. Except, I was writing it from the opposite angle.

Let's take a look at the situation. The social security tax is spent as soon as it is taken. What we pay today goes to fund the checks that are written today, and the system is slated to become insolvent some time before 2020 because of the number of baby boomers reaching retirement age. Now we have activists who want us to come up with a way to fund this defunct system since they did not plan for their own retirement.

What did they do for their retirement? They paid into Social Security. Then they elected the half wit and dishonest politicians over and over and over and over who took their Social Security money and used it to fund other projects. As far as i am concerned these people (the baby boomers) are getting what they put in and paid for. The fault for social security does not lie with the politicians who spent the money, it lies with the people who elected these politicians to guard the proverbial chicken coop. Now they wonder where the eggs are. Through their votes, they enabled the theft of their retirement.

I'm sorry if you have to work while your friends are taking a life of luxury. I have a problem with the boo-hooing over the empty cofers of social security, and I have a problem with me paying into something I will never have a chance to use. However, I am already paying for someone's retirement check everytime I get paid and I think it's ridiculous to expect more out of my paycheck because someone else already spent their retirement.

Personally, I am taking care of my own finances for retirement. I watch it like a hawk, and my wife and I will enjoy it a great deal when that day comes.

Perhaps you should have planned better for your retirement rather than relying on the gubament to take care of you. I can imagine that SS check really does suck.

But don't worry. In the future the gubament will take care of the aging dependent class in this country via a new government program. May I be the first to introduce the Department Of Euthanasia.

Or maybe we can just turn them info food like that 70s
Sci-Fi flick starring Charleton Heston? We'll all be old someday.
And that "aging dependent class" will soon also be a solid voter block.

I'm not hungry myself, git. Some of us who have been fortunate in life still understand that a very high percentage of our fellow citizens are having a hard time surviving, or at least are miserable.
I'm one who wants things better for them, and one way to make that happen is for them to be able to get the "necessities of life (food, shelter, health care) at a resonable cost. I work toward that end.

Why do you think those of us that aren't having such a hard time of it don't deserve the same things at a reasonable cost?

Because we worked harder and saved we should have to pay more?

Submitted by dollaradayandfound on Thu, 05/10/2007 - 3:00pm.

It is automatic, don't you see? If one group can buy reasonably, all can.

.... hamburger @ $3.00 per pound .... $60 for enough gas to go 350 miles?

Why do you make up all this home-spun statistical crap? Are you just lonely or what? Don't you realize that we don't buy in to your made up bull-hockey?

You make Chicken Little look like Pollyanna.

The economy is GREAT you dolt. Go get a job.

And it has stopped who from driving?

The either-this-or-that argument doesn't work. Either three-dollar gas or stop driving isn't based upon reasonable assumptions.

First of all, as a country, we have not invested in a public transportation system that allows most people to avoid driving to work. Simply put, if you can't get around by some other means, you have no choice but to drive to the place where you earn your daily bread.

Second, inasmuch as there is no other readily available source for vehicle power (although the need to go to work, to schools, to the grocery store, the doctor, the hospital, etc., has not decreased), people have no other choice than to pay whatever it costs to buy petroleum-based fuel.

So, you will not likely see the resultant decrease in driving. Instead, you will see it in discretionary spending and when people run out of discretionary spending cuts they start cutting back on the essentials of life. Usually, this will hit elderly people and others on fixed incomes first and worst.

$3.00 gasoline hasn't affected anybody's driving habits. Perhaps it should. But that's what they make credit cards for isn't it? People aren't going to cut back on their driving. They'll sooner sell their soul to the devil rather than give up the liberty they feel the automobile gives them. Thank goodness I can afford it and I don't have to sell mine. Eye-wink

On the bright side though.... High gas prices are justifying the investments needed from the private sector to research better alternative energy "mouse traps" in an attempt to earn dollars off of the little people. Oh how I love Capitalism. Smiling

I think fuel prices might have something something to with the heavy losses of GM and Ford and the rise of Toyota as the world's number one car manufacturer. So I'm not sure if higher prices has affected how much people drive but it sure affects what they drive. Smiling

If the Govt. would give me an incentive to buy that BMW 1100 LT that I've been drolling over.

It gets over 50 MPG.

If I can get a "energy break" on a car, why not a motorcycle?

If everybody started to commute with motorcycles, congestion would go away and fuel consumption would drop.

Sounds like a win win to me.

Well dollar, I started riding at 5 (Honda 50) and racing at 11 (Hodaka Combat Wonbat 125). I have ALWAYS had at least one bike. I have had a street bike since 15 (Suzuki GT380K). I hit a car head on at 16 (her fault) and I am now 49. I still have a bike and I still ride often.

Last summer I rode 3,200 miles in 5 days with a friend. Last time I checked- I'm not dead yet (no thanks to many 'cage' drivers).

Either way – it’s MY choice.

1) most experienced adult riders don't crash too often
2) the #1 killer of motorcyclists is oncoming cars turning left
3) 68% of motorcycle accidents are caused by "at fault cars"
4) Most have insurance (health and vehicle) to cover those bills.
5) good gear prevents injuries. I have watched guys go down at 100MPH+ and walk away.

I'm certified to drive, fly or dive most anything the Govt. will certify as legal. I can even do it with some things that aren't legal.

Two wheels, four wheels, treads or tracks, I can drive them all. Rotor or propeller, I don't care.

As far as I know I was the only systems Admin. that had a license to drive cherry pickers, tractor trailers and forklifts.

What ever it takes to get the job done is my motto.

And depending on where you are driving – ‘white-lining’. I know a lot of motorcylists frown upon that, but when I lived in California, where white-lining was legal, it was worth the high risk of death to avoid sitting in traffic.
