Food Now / What's Goin' On

Now, I've gotten hungry.

Old Mill is up For Sale...I guess that was better than a new lease w/ the old guy.

Is Buckhead going to be a drug store?
Fuddrucker's? Signs down. H@@ters?

Anyone eat'n @ Wines & Grinds?

GA Shrimp is still a good deal.

I know it was sold, grass is growing up, and I've seen some utility markers on the grounds. Did we ever confirm if in fact Walgreen's bought it and plans on tearing it down for another drug store?

I heard a new restaurant opened in Newnan where Valentino's was suppose to reopen. Its called something like Peg Leg Caribbean.
Anyone been there? Is it the owners of the old Valention's?

is the name of it. I went Saturday night. Basically the same menu. Service was slow, slow slow but they just opened so that's understandable.

No liquor license until May 8th.

The WILL honor old gift certificates from Valentino's.

We were just there today. I can't comment on the food because the service was so slow we got up and left. No one even came by to take our drink order after 10 or 15 minutes.

From what I've heard, Valentino's had two partners, something happened and they parted ways. One moved away, and the other is opening up a resturant in Newnan. I always enjoyed thier food and service in PTC, wish they had stayed. There is alot of compitition especially from chains, in Newnan and the way businesses fail, especially resturants, not sure that they will be in the 50% that make it one year. It's a tough business, and they seem to have had a following already in PTC, I for one, don't want to drive 10 -15 miles for dinner, when there are businesses to support in my own town, wish Valentino's was still one of them.

I was so bummed when I saw the "Gone Fishin'" sign on Old Mill. They had some excellent seafood. I wasn't impressed with Ga Shrimp when it was beside Ted's in the Pavilion area, is it really better in PTC?

While no longer actually in FayCo (they used to be off 74 in Tyrone), Catfish Hollow (now off of 34 and 154 in Sharpsburg) dishes up some good and plentiful seafood.

I prefer local establishments over franchises, but I would love to see Red Lobster, BoneFish, or Up the Creek in FayCo.

Zaxby's Chicken will be the death of me. I don't know what they put in their sauce but I swear this has been some of the best chicken I've tasted in my life (sorry Mom). Unfortunately, I had to put a stop to eating from them as I seem to gain 2 lbs every time I eat there. Smiling
Lot of generic eating places between F and PTC but I also love Thai Spice on "The Avenue" in PTC. Speak up people, what local establishment has food good enough to make your mouth water?

Five Guys is great, nice addition. Tried the Gecko place and was disappointed, it's a generic version of Moe's. Larry's Giant Subs has the best sandwich but Quiznos is a close second. Pies on Pizza had GREAT pizza as does Johnny's. I'm glad PTC is getting another Johnny's. I am also excited about She's, the new Peking Restaurant though I really miss Dragon Lady. Partners II in PTC is a classic. I wish we had: Olive Garden, decent BBQ, Steak N Shake, Panera, PF Chang.

Oh yea, the Mt. Fuji is really good, yes, they have the white sauce!

For pizza or calzones, I like Mellow Mushroom's pizza for the dough texture but the sauce is beyond bland (ever heard of basil, oregano and garlic???).

I wish we had a Mama Fu's. It's reasonably priced, Asian inspired, fast casual fare.

As for 'Cue, my rule is not to eat BBQ from any place that doesn't look like I'm taking my life in my hands to drive into the neighborhood to get it. The best places usually have a 3-year thick layer of soot and grease on the walls, barely-legible hand-written menus and smoke billowing out of a wood fire pit like some kind of 3-alarm blaze. Never had bad 'Cue out of a place like that. Laughing out loud

Speedi-Pig, which is just south of Grady Avenue in Fayetteville on GA Hwy 85 (before Kroger's), has the best BBQ ribs I've ever eaten. They literally fall of the bone, tender, succulent, and they have an awesome sauce. Their chopped pork is good, and their smoked wings have been all over the country, because I take them to reunions! Now if they just had a decent BBQ salad... DuRock had one, but they're closed. Jim N' Nicks BBQ, hailing from Alabama, has an awesome "Pig in the Garden" salad. Crisp lettuce, cucumbers, chopped egg, carrots, and succulent pork... YUM!!! Unfortunately, they haven't seemed to have gotten any farther east than Hiram.

Speaking of crisp lettuce, what the heck is going on with restaurants nowadays? Have they all gone to that nasty bagged lettuce? At least rinse that stuff before putting it in my bowl! I like my lettuce rinsed and crispy, not dried out and limp!

I really like "Cafe Pig" on Huddleston. I like their Que and their sides. Smoked wings are a nice touch too.

Cafe Pig is a local treasure. If you can find room for a treat after dinner try their banana pudding. It'll hurt you bad.

I agree with Concerned on the rest of the selection. I wonder it He, She or It has ever tried the Pig?

I, the ambiguously un-gendered Concerned Citizen have never eaten at the Pig but I will try it soon. Swmbo must like Harolds BBQ in Atlanta.

Cafe Pig is now my clear local favorite (since Du-Roc closed down, anyway).

The last time I was in there (we go about once/twice a month) I noticed that they had jacked their menu prices up $1 to $1.50 an item. I actually talked to the owner about that, I said hey I like your food but your prices are getting a bit too high for my taste.

He told me that the price of pork bellies that he buys in bulk have skyrocketed and because he was a single business he couldn't lock into long term pork contracts like Smokey Bones and the chains do. He also said Smokey Bones just about put him out of business when they first opened up but business was recovering nicely now (yay!)

The very best BBQ in the Atlanta area is up near the airport, on Upper Riverdale road a half-mile outside of the I285 exit. I think it's called "Key's BBQ". The old man makes some great pork BBQ....just avoid the place when his bling-bling son is workin' the pit! Sticking out tongue

Submitted by McDonoughDawg on Mon, 04/30/2007 - 10:28am.

I do a good bit of smoking butts/ribs at home and the prices have gone by almost 50% on the Baby Backs in the "vac-packs" at the warehouse clubs. Butts have gone up too.

That being said, good meat costs, and I think the Pig has some good eats.

I'll give the place off of Riverdale Road a try.

To the Ambiguously Un-gendered Concerned Citizen: I think you will love it. In spite of their pricing going up I think that Bas would definetly agree the atmosphere and the wonderful folks that work there and own it are well worth the price. Heck you can still get in and out of there a lot cheaper than the that Smelly Bones place.

A side note....If you want a veggie lunch or dinner then the Pig is the place to go. Turnip Greens, Corn On The Cob, Black Eyed Peas, New Potatoes, Sweet Potatoe Somethingoranother, Green Beans, and I'm sure I've left out something. Just don't spread the news though. If they get too busy Bas and I won't find a table. Errr...tables. I think he once said he wouldn't dine with me. Eye-wink Or was that some one else?

BTW... Did I mention the Banana Pudding? And when's Dawg having us all over for a butt and rib smokin? Smiling

Well, Git Real, I heard your table manners have improved to the point where ya only drool out of one side of your mouth now, so I guess you can sit at the "adult table" with me! Laughing out loud

Then we'll throw an issue on the table and see who will win the quiet game. If we need a tie breaker we'll settle it with rock, paper, scissors.
