I AM NOT MAD AT IMUS

AF A-10's picture

Let the record show that some of us African American/Black/Negro/Colored/Melanin-enhanced types will jealously guard free speech no matter how incredible the comments. Short of yelling fire in a crowded room or crank calling 911, this is what makes America disfunctionally beautiful.
Imus has apologized to the greatest extent he can. Now, let's all relax, sit back, and let the market place dictate what happens. I don't like Rush or Ann Coulter, but I won't demand they be fired. At times, I will write letters requesting the Citizen use their space more constructively, and, as with Imus, I vote with my feet. But let the free speech continue. Citizens will choose to buy or not buy the records, and watch or not watch the news programs that intrigue them.
Also, for the record, these girls at Rutgers (or should I say young college women) represented themselves well today, and I saw no nappiness (that was a joke, by the way. Smiling )

Cheers all,

I was watching Fox this morning (Saturday). I do like getting all angles of the news, but I notice they use banners to print things they can't say; things they can't say because they can't defend them.

As they talked about various angles of the Imus fallout, the banner prominently at the bottom of the screen said this in essence:

Will the Imus fallout hurt democratic fundraising?

Stop the presses! Any reputable journalist knows that Imus is a self proclaimed Republican. He supports John McCain for President. He berates Hillary Clinton at every opportunity. So how do his statements hurt democrats? How are they partisan at all?
Condi Rice condemned him as did Oprah, Hilary, Rudy, John McCain, Barack. Some times I think Fox just tries too hard to put top spin on stories which need no spin at all.

As a form of media "taste test" I challenge any of my conservative friends here (and I really mean friends) to point out CNN or MSNBC/NBC/CBS news spin stories. I believe you'll have a bit of difficulty, but I'm an open vessel on this.

Forgot to post this from notes I made last week. Too busy watching clips from The View & 20/20 & Dateline. Smiling

I did look at the ABC News site (Politics Playlist) & saw some examples of bias. Here's some of what I saw (just a quick list).

Notice Diane Sawyer's reaction to Larry Elder at the end of the interview. Can't tell if she's really offended or not.

Notice how favorable Edwards on the Campaign Trail (04/12/2007) is when the supposed topic is extreme campaigning, not PR for Edwards.

"Running for office is more than just kissing babies; it's connecting with the common man," i.e., Edwards visiting a nursing home and helping out SEIU (Service Employers International Union) Healthcare workers (who say he's "doing fine"). Shown as warm & caring.

Contrast the POSITIVE coverage of Edwards with Guiliano who doesn’t know the price of milk.

04/09/2007 - Potential Presidential Hopeful in N. Korea - Richardson

04/05/2007 - Fundraising Numbers Raise the Stakes - Obama

04/05/2007 - 2008 Presidential Politics: Rudy Giuliani

"How is the former mayor of New York City doing among conservatives?"

(No questions about how are Dems doing among liberals -- The country needs to fear those wacko conservatives!)

Focuses on Giuliani & abortion – inconsistent statements (True, but where's the same treatment for the Dems?)

Personal life & social issues – a lot of "bluster"

04/04/2007 - Obama Boom (positive sounding)

04/04/2007 - Giuliani Puts Iowa in N.Y. State of Mind

Mentions Obama twice & other Dem candidates in first minute
G's "Brass, big-city style"
G's Pooper Scooper sound bite (Wonder why that one didn't make the cutting room floor?)
Only shown walking around, shaking hands & surrounded by the media

vs. Edwards shaving a man & pushing a woman in a wheelchair & talking with healthcare workers = just average next-door neighbor type

04/03/2007 - Mitt Romney's the Man of the Morning

Money & his religion ($ coming from Mormons)
His religion
His marriage vs. McCain & Guiliani’s divorces
Pressed for troop withdrawal time frame
Personal appearance helps to get votes (didn't mention Edwards) -- implication that he doesn't have much substance?
Why he’s raising so much $

How often are Dems asked the source of their $?

04/03/2007 - Republican Fundraising Numbers Are In

Diane Sawyer with Romney
No mention of Dems’ $
Joke about Romney marrying ALL of the soccer moms who think that he's good looking ("funny" reference to polygamy & Mormonism)
Romney's faith emphasized
$ from Mormons (religion scare tactic)

04/02/2007 - Campaign Money Trail: Who's in First?

"Fundraising totals appear to have Sen. Hillary Clinton in the lead."

Raising $ = Sign of strength
Barbra Streisand & rapper endorsements
Most extraordinary fund raiser
"Negative" -- $$$ does not mean that HC's assured of winning.

03/30/2007 - Obama and Friend Take Different Paths

"Barack Obama's close childhood friend has been homeless and in jail."
Problems of being black in America
Friend shown tearful when talking about Obama
Stresses how Obama’s helping him

03/30/2007 - Exclusive: The Giuliani's With Barbara Walters

Personal life – both on 3rd marriage (2003) & infidelity & RG
estranged from his children

(Compare with the favorable treatment the Edwards get, especially when Elizabeth's cancer reappeared. I am only mentioning this because of the amount of free coverage JE got & the financial boost it gave him. Can't quite see the same sympathy & coverage would be extended to Mrs. Bush or Mrs. Cheney. Also remember some favorable coverage of Obama & his wife. Best to keep silent on this subject with the Clintons!)

03/27/2007 - Elizabeth Edwards Hits the Road

Hugging people -- shown as warm & caring
Part Oprah & part revival –- "my angel," "my idol," "my everything"
"Like Lance Armstrong"
Crusade instead of a campaign –- she's "thriving," "energetic"

03/26/2007 - United Front of Optimism for Team Edwards

03/23/2007 - Edwards Campaign Continues

~ Edwards seems to be getting a lot of positive coverage from ABC during this time period. From my quick (vs. in-depth) analysis, there was nothing negative about him here.

______________

Almost all news stories on the Playlist in this time period were seemingly negative toward Bush (judging by the titles & a few that I watched).

I don't think I have ever witnessed a TV news channel, and ALL of its announcers and producers, who have taken it upon themselves to deliberately scheme propaganda for a Washington administration and Corporations.
I only watch them anymore when CNN has on a re-run and they may have some news.
It wouldn't be so bad provided they EVER saw anything they liked that the Bush Administration didn't. If they have, I haven't seen or heard of it.
It is embarrassing sometimes---the snide remarks, the sour criticism, the total agreement among employees.
It is obvious they will work for money only and don't have any right to evaluate the news for themselves.

I think the tide is finally turning for Fox News. For ten years they've tried to have it both ways, insisting they are "Fair 'n Balanced" while functioning as the unofficial partisan Republican house organ.

I enjoyed watching them howl in outrage when all the major Democratic candidates declined to participate in a Fox-sponsored debate (remember the last time Fox sponsored one? Every candidate got "gotcha" questions except Dino Joe Lieberman, a Fox supporter).

I have been surprised, though, that Fox actually criticized two Republicans in the past two weeks: Newt Gingrich, who was criticizing Nancy Pelosi for meeting with foreign presidents (Didn't you do that as Speaker too? Yeah, but that was DIFFERENT!) and then when evil Senator Mitch McConnell criticized Dems for not giving President Bunnypants his war budget (Didn't you do that to Clinton on Bosnia? Yeah, but I was a new senator then! How does being a new senator make things different? I was a NEW SENATOR then! Oh, okay)

For proof positive go to their website. There are more features on the the dregs of Hollywood and other perverted or otherwise demented derelicts than any other news source out there. Plus they are indeed the only Republican mouthpiece of the TV news channels. Their slant is inarguable.

Now as for CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS etc., etc., they are indubitably the mouth piece for the Democrat side of the aisle.

Those facts are as indisputable as saying that Mother Theresa was a good person and Adolph Hitler was evil.

I read more than watch TV -- too many sound bites & obsession with stories like ANS.

Isn't the internet wonderful. Like you I don't have to watch Fox or CNN anymore. I can troll around reading and researching many different news sites enabling me to sort out the facts from the malarkey. Quite honestly I can say that the only time I ever watch CNN is when I'm forced to while eating a tasty burger at Backyard Burgers or when I'm stranded at Hartsfield Airport. Of course it helps when you don't have cable.... but that's a blessing in its self.

Denise...I see you figured out how to post links. Looks great!!! Flying Under The Radar was an awesome show. Makes me think of Hack. Flying out over rural Oklahoma at about 75' over the ground and seeing some Brush Okie lazily riding his tractor while turning last years wheat crop under and then.... With a wicked grin on his face.... and out of nowhere.... KAZOOMY.... buzzing the poor guy while causing him to mess his pants.

And we should use our larger, slower planes to take every last US soldier, Marine, sailor, and Airman out of the civil unrest which our president refuses to acknowledge is a failure. Now. Gump's picture
Submitted by Gump on Sun, 04/15/2007 - 11:36pm.

Dollar, consider the outcome of the Bosnian war in 1999. NATO air forces mounted a sustained bombing campaign against Serbian forces, with extremely light NATO casualties, and the result being the Serbians eventually acceded to the UN demands. No occupation was necessary until after the war, and then it was a relatively minor peaceful occupation, nothing like what is going on now in Iraq.

So it definitely IS possible to bring a country to its knees with just air power. What makes the situation different in Iraq was the near total lack of planning of what to do after the fall of Bagdad. There is a long list of incredible blunders that I'm sure you are familiar with.

By the way, talking about awsome firepower, nobody has mentioned the AC-130 gunship. Talk about "reach out and touch someone"!! I had a chance to do a tour with them, but I passed it up for family reasons. That would have been a great assignment.

Our Air Force is certainly the best in the world, but they can't win wars from 40,000 feet or from 200 feet, alone.

Submitted by AF A-10 on Sun, 04/15/2007 - 9:01pm.

But our capabilities in the AF are quite extensive. We have UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles), fighter planes, attack planes, reconnaissance planes, transport, bombers, communication, etc. We have infrared and optical satellites. Being that Iraq has a government, we can support their troops on the ground from above. THEY OCCUPY THEIR OWN COUNTRY, and we serve as the Air Force they don't have (because we wiped it off of the map.) As they contact insurgents, they summon us, we kill them from above. It is not complicated. As movements of insurgents are seen across the borders with Iran or Syria, we ruin their days as well. But we stay out of Iraq's civil war. The beauty is this would cost a fraction of what we are blowing now, and we will not be seen globally as imperialists, but as supporters of a fledgling govt. I hope this isn't too military tech talk. I'm always willing to chat about this subject.

I think it would be best if no one was allowed to use racial slurs........especially black rappers. Stop using the race card people ......as long as blacks keep tossing around racial slurs like they were candy, things will never change in this country.

First, I realize that all the things Imus said all these years on his CBS radio show, and then on MSNBC-TV, is somewhat different in its impact than for Snoop Dog, et al, to publish such trash for our youngsters to see and hear.
What I don't understand though is the near total avoidance of the latter, when blacks are questioned by the media!
It doesn't make what Imus did be a responsible thing, even if 10,000 hip-hop artists were spouting such trash, all at the same time.
I know the difference in the two: Imus attacked a whole group of athletes as being cheap; Hip-hoppers are talking about real people who possess the qualities they describe, and deserve to be called that.
It is a matter of opinion whether one is worse than the other.
They are both trying to make a living shocking people, and appealing to their worst traits.

Anyway, I appreciate that you and I can disagree on occasion without race, socioeconomic or religious affiliation becoming a part of the problem.

It seems that some people on here only want to divide by any means possible, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, political views, race, whatever works to divide and persecute, judge and condemn. For banmani it’s: “Agree with me or be called a (Christianist, homophobe, racist, race baiter, right wing nut job, homophobe, etc.). And, “Cal he called me a name, insert misapplied state law, make him apologize, censor him, CENSOR hiiiiim!!!” Blah blah blah. Ugh.

Hutch: Thank you for staying neutral as tempers flared around you. I appreciate your restraint.

All: I apologize for giving the impression that I felt the warrior spirit on these blogs was a one-way street. As I stitch my wounds of late, I realize that it runs rampant here in the Citizen.

Mixer: You are a good man (a reiteration) to offer me my man card back (you are offering it back, right?) Thanks for the apology.

Enigma: Have you ever seen situations where a couple of aggressive, hot-headed guys get into a friendly tussle that ends up going a bit too far (broken furniture, bones, and/or bruises?) We were headed that way in the blog sense. I'm standing down. Thanks for your gestures to do the same.

Last comment: When I blog to one person saying x and y are funny guys, or brave guys, or witty guys, it does not mean every one else is not. You are just able to listen in on a two way conversation. If Bas and I were on opposite political spectrums, I'm sure I'd have been banned by now. But we aren't. Personally, I'm willing to bet the whole lot of us would make a dang effective unit if we were serving together. We'd just have to leave politics out of it. I beg you guys to let emotions cool a bit and return with a fresh perspective on how discussions between Americans should take place. I hope we can all be the bigger man in this.

Cheers my brothers,

Kevin "Hack" King

I can't find one of your recent responses now, but I seem to remember that you added the additional information that your wife was present much later to your original statement.

Your using that particular example to justify eliminating abstinence education seemed, well, "creepy" (to use your words about Mark).

Count me in. We have got to find a way to be able to discuss these issues and still keep our testosterone in check. I appreciate you stepping up and taking a leadership role in this. Hack, I accept you proposal and agree to elevate the civility of our discourse.

I for one would feel 100 times better if I could see ArmyMajor and MAV apologize and start fresh. I can certainly recall more than few times I was ready to bite the head off of a team member in tent city - I was wrong then and I am wrong now.

Mixer, I don't know you...or do I? There truly are not many CCs around here and if you are one- I would love to share a cigar like we talked about. I like your politics and I like your wit. Please, accept Hack’s proposal and agree to elevate the civility of our discourse.

Hack, I respect you as a man and a fellow father, vet, and blogger. You are a worthy opponent and have a good heart. I think our real rift began when we both came to the aid of another – maybe it’s in our training? Regardless, I am sure if we have not met we will and I look forward to it.

MAV , you and I could not be further apart in our political perspective – at least on the topics we have debated/discussed/destroyed but I see you believe in God. I bet you want to be safe, have a good place to raise your family and want America to thrive. You and I simply do not agree on how to achieve that – but we want the same things. I apologize for the insults and I would TRULY like to see you and the ArmyMajorRetired get along. I really think if you and he don’t insult each other- neither of you will breech that slippery slope with another blogger. Please, accept Hack’s proposal and agree to elevate the civility of our discourse.

ArmyMajorRetired, I don’t know you – but we appear to be on the same basic side politically. I must ask you as I have MAV (Basmati), please stop insulting each other so that we can raise the level of discourse to a more civil level. No one is hiding and no one is afraid and no one should be banned. Many of us, including Hack and Jeff came to your aid. I know that you and basmati could not be further apart. I also know that you both have something intelligent to contribute. Please, accept Hack’s proposal and agree to elevate the civility of our discourse.

Well, I generally trust your judgment, Hack. But I'd point out that Enigma is the one who chimes in with the "reverse racism" talking points when people bring up racism, as if "the other side does it toooooo" is a valid defense and two wrongs make a right. Case in point: Enigma's claim that Black Entertainment TV is "racist and divisive", presumably because it doesn't carry enough programming for white folks. *rolling eyes*

I suppose I could be wrong here, and Enigma should be considered profoundly ignorant as opposed to a true race-baiter. I guess I assume the worst about people who trivialize combat deaths by equating them to car accident deaths.

No one has used more derogatory personal attacks than banmani has - and "it takes one to know one". Ask the rice queen, banmani, the queen of censorship if you aren't sure what a racist slur is. She does after all, claim to be the authority on all things related to gender, sexuality and race.

She even says that "As slurs go, it's a tad more imaginative than the usual ones foisted upon us here by the race baiting contingent (norwester aka thebeaver, 30yearresident, enigma, et al). "Thug" was getting a bit worn out as a euphemism.

(et al means "and others", Denise)"

Let's see, that's 5 personal attacks in two sentences. Gee, that's good even for banmani!

We should all think 2 or 3 times, or a lot more, before mindless name-calling, especially about a person's superficial features because such fatuous, callous barbs can produce a lot more than superficial wounds in those less "thick-skinned."

Agreed...It's totally up to Imus's employers whether he continues to be employed. They have a business decision to make, and that's how they'll make it.

By the way, has anyone ever heard Al Sharpton apologize to the New Jersey prosecutor he falsely defamed as a racist and rapist during the Tawana Brawley affair? According to wikipedia, the righteous Rev. Al has never paid any of the damages the prosecutor won against him court, either.

It's astonishing -- stranger than fiction -- that Al Sharpton is even considered a credible commentator on anything given that that's how he climbed onto the national stage as a "civil rights leader."

My gut says fire the dolt. He really should have been fired years ago. He's an idiot.

Heck, basmati cried like a baby until ArmyMajor was banned and censored and all Major did was use a character in place of a letter to spell out a 'bad' word (like at least two that are on here right now) and we don't even pay Major to blog.

If his job was say, counting beans and he wants to say what he did, fine. He actually makes millions talking on the microphone - stop paying him for that.

Thank about it, his job is to talk to millions of people on an open microphone and he has misused that position.

Don’t kill him or break his legs - just take his microphone.

If he can make a living without his microphone - great - if not- that's just the cost of misusing a media that reaches millions.

I suppose you can make an argument that this is only a racial issue for Rutgers players to deal with, and maybe I shouldn't have a voice in this issue, but I really think an 'unbridled' mouth (basmati) should be 'unplugged'(Major).

I suppose I’ll do what Hack does and vote with my feet – or tuner in this case.

But I disagree with you a tad bit here. I say let's round up Imus, Sharpton, & Jackson and hold each of them to the same set of standards. Perhaps we can get rid of 3 PICKS at one time. Did I misspell Pick?

I don't like what Imus said, but I didn't hear it because I don't listen to Imus. I also don't listen to the hiphop and rappers that call all women much worse than that and make their living doing it. If we are going to have free speech ... lets have it. If not, you have to shut it all down. About the only thing that is politically correct to disrespect these days is Christianity.
Let there be free speech that our Constitution supposedly protects and then let people decide who they will turn off.
If Chris Rock had said what Imus said, there would not even be a discussion. If Rock has free speech then Imus should as well.

Git Real's picture
Submitted by Git Real on Wed, 04/11/2007 - 9:19am.

Imus is as offensive as Sharpton. Sharpton as offensive as Jackson. Jackson as offensive as... well nobody's as bad as Jackson.

My point was not to suppress free speech but rather hold everyone to the same standards. Right now free speech is graded on the curve. The Al Sharptons and Jessie Jacksons can say whatever the heck they choose with no accountability and somehow they are viewed as revered leaders. Imus or Coulter does the same and the mob mentality is "off with their heads".
