It's Only Money (Why Not Waste It?)

Spear Road Guy's picture

The Tour de Georgia has a new dubious high. The broken down bike race is now asking the state legislature for a $1 million bailout!

The similarities to the tennis center in Peachtree City are so striking it’s unbelievable. The lies that it’ll help attract development and it won’t cost the taxpayers a dime are same ones used by the old Virgil Christian and Tom Farr crowd.

Peachtree City is waist-high in yet another sports profiteering sham. I’ll tell you what, Mayor Harold likes paying off those fishy deals. You can’t get the guy to pay his employees a decent wage, but he’ll sure jump at a lot of stupid stuff like bicycle races and bad development authority loans.

Oh yeah, look at how the tennis center has been revving up our local economy, especially the failing restaurants.

If a few snobbish people want their little playground and events for the rich and famous, let them pay for it. This bike race won't even be a blip on local economy.

The benefits of being associated with the bike race are so "great" they can't even get a local major corporation interested. That is the real test of impact.

Smart cities like Alpharetta don't do stupid stuff like this.

Once again, the narrow-minded with agendas try to justify their positions and fail miserably.

Final stage and finish line on Morrison Parkway at Haynes Bridge Road

The 2006 Ford Tour de Georgia is North America’ premier, professional cycling event and rolling festival of community events. This year’s race features 12 Host Cities with six start lines and six finish lines. The multi-day stage race starts April 18 in Augusta and travels across Georgia for the overall finish in Alpharetta 6 days later. The Tour de Georgia is now a 2.HC (hors classe) rated professional stage race, the highest rating outside of Europe. This makes the event the only HC stage race in North America.

So last year, Alpharetta had no problem with this. And this year, Peachtree City got an honor to host this.

And for those of you who keep saying that they're selling liquor at City Hall, you're WRONG. They are ALLOWING liquor to be consumed at City Hall for a private party.

But go ahead and get half the story.

Smart cities like Alpharetta don't have bloggers like you all.

Submitted by skyspy on Sat, 03/31/2007 - 8:05pm.

The only reason they hosted this white elephant last year was because it didn't cost the taxpayers a dime. Many "smart cities" bowed out this year.

60,000 for the "tour de drunk" is too much for any taxpayers to have to swallow.

There is nothing "world class" about this except for the egos of some small time athlete wannabees.

My tax dollar had better not be paying for harold's drunk at city hall!

An honor to host this? How about honoring the PTC fireman and police officers with some raises rather than waste money on something designed to boost certain individuals egos? Spending tens of thousands of dollars on a sporting event like this is nothing shy of needless government waste and thievery of the citizens of PTC.

And for those of you who keep saying that they're selling liquor at City Hall, you're WRONG. They are ALLOWING liquor to be consumed at City Hall for a private party.

What the hell is alcohol being served at City Hall for. Private or not boozing it up on city property is inappropriate. I would be hauled to jail if I sat outside City Hall consuming a beer. What type of elitist White Trash is running the show down there anyways.

And which City Hall Scumbag Elitist are you? The one who is going to grandstand at the Tour de Logsdon Drunk Fest?

Submitted by thebiggun on Sat, 03/31/2007 - 9:30pm.

Ok I must start by saying I have been talking to lots of people that know Logsdon. Co-works from NCR, Bell South, Police Department, Fire Department, National Guard etc. I have to say that all say he is dumb as a rock. Can't read, hangs out at bars (Y-Not, Big Daddy's ets, thinks the police are stalking him and his other drunk buddy Boone, has put the future of this city in the hands of Bernie (convicted drunk driver) McMullen, City Manager. Eats out of the hands of the Developers because he is the STOOGE that they got elected and can not walk and chew gum at the same time. Don't believe me, ask the people that see him every day. This guy is a joke. Now I am not a supported of Brown but my God we have elected Forrest Gump.

Everyone, and I mean everyone, is getting off this sinking ship. Fire Chief is getting off this sinking ship, Police Chief is right behind the Fire Chief because he can no longer put up with a City Manager and Mayor that put drinking before a safe city. Just look at what is going on, Drinking at the City Hall Plaza, Mayor and Boone sitting in bars all over the city and telling people how the have to be careful as the police are out to arrest them for DUI when they leave the bars DRUNK. A City Manager that pretends he did no wrong getting drunk at a city facility, getting arrested, gets bailed out by another City Council person (Pluckett) and then the Mayor saying how much he supports the City Manager after his arrest. And then I have been told he gets the biggest bonus he has every gotten for that year.

Now let's take a look at development. Build it and they will come is the motto of Boone and Logsdon. Well I mean that is Logsdon saying it and Boone trys to say something that will support Logsdon but can't get it out of his mouth. Both boys standing there with their guts hanging over their belts wondering how they got elected. And we call ourselves Progressive. We have stepped back 25 years in PTC when it comes to having a city that we all thought we had. Look around at the roads, Litter, cart paths, sinking police station, an assistant city manager that headed a corrupt public works department for 15 years and a police union formed because they have "problems" with the City Council and Mayor.

I came to PTC because it was the most wonderful place to live and raise my family. We do not have that anymore. If you believe we do you need to come to a City Council meeting and just watch what goes on.

As long as you say you were binge drinking you won't be held accountable for your mistakes.

Also you can drink and drive, or drink at city hall .....harold said drinking is legal on that day so I guess ...public drunkiness, and drinking and driving, and urinating in public is ok too.. all the other things that go along with drinking in public....harold has given us a free day wuuuppppeee!

Thank god for worthless alcoholics in office!!!!!!

Anyone want to bet how many PTC cops will be stationed at city hall to observe those leaving who had been drinking in order to follow and ticket? Golf carts and all.
You know, like they did at the amphitheater?
I say NONE!
I never see any around NASCAR tracks after the race except to shoo them away.

Seem to lose that Vote Rebublican tag every now and then. Don't you think Harold is 1 of U? How about Westmoron? Don't U control the GA legislature & Sonny?
Did you read the latest, more than 40% of the wealth is controlled by...well you are probably 1 of those wealthy people.
The bike race is a good thang and what little the city puts out will be well spent and money will be returned.

60-70,000 dollars of my tax money is not money well spent. On a race that really isn't a race anyway.

The Tour de Georgia is good for the area! Just ask any of the businesses that will profit from the crowds. It's a world-class sporting event whose athletes deserve respect. (yes, there are more sports in Georgia than NASCAR and football)

I wish Ford had been able to continue their sponsorship but supporting the Tour is still good for Georgia!!

From the Tour website:
Since 2003 the Tour de Georgia has attracted 2.3 million spectators and generated direct economic impact to the Georgia economy that has totaled over $121 million.

The week-long event will maintain its traditional "Tour de France tune-up" slot on the UCI international cycling calendar as a 2. HC (Hors Categorie) professional event, attracting the best teams from North America and across the globe. Two of the past four winners have also won the Tour de France in the same year as winning the Tour de Georgia - Americans Lance Armstrong (2004, US Postal Professional Cycling Team) and Floyd Landis (2006, Team Phonak).

America has now come to the point where non-essential, extra-government activities regularly demand and expect funding. Even at the local level, our Commission and Councils fund charities. They do not have the courage to say no. This is a significant break with history.

Please understand---I love cycling. Though I detest Armstrong, Greg Lemond is more of the class athlete that I saw as a leader in the sport. Armstrong is just another egomanical Eddy Merckx. Even Chippenelli was of more value than Armstrong.

Tennis Centers, Airshows and Bike Races should be funded by the private sector. If the Bike Race is failing financially, that is a clear signal from the private corporate sponsors that it is not an event worth pursuing. The Super Bowl sells expensive commercial because companies are convinced of the value. The Corporate sponsors have withdrawn from the Tour because it is not self-sustaining.

For the City of Peachtree City to deny public safety employees competitive pay designed to promote retention while at the same time funding a Bike Race which will promote drunkeness is shameful. Mr. Logsdon is dangerously close to creating a legacy inextricably intertwined with wasteful spending and drinking.

This white elephant can't pay for itself.....that's why no one else wanted it either....harold wanted it here so he could allow drinking and driving for one day in the city. Next thing you know he will allow alcohol for the 4th.

Since when is alcohol an essential part of an "true" athletic event?

Peachtree City is throwing in somewhere around $60,000 to $70,000 on this event. Even better, the mayor backed the sale alcohol at the event!!! So much for that Peachtree City "family atmosphere."

If the guy needs a drink so bad that he has to sanction alcohol sales at local family events, maybe he ought to go into rehab. It worked for Britney Spears.

We've got real problems when you read we can't pay our police officers the same as other cities and we're wasting money on a defunct bike race in the same issue of the newspaper. Poor priorities and poor leadership!

Submitted by dollaradayandfound on Fri, 03/30/2007 - 5:14pm.

I'm sure it was requested by the bike people. When you have about 25% of the crowd that has an alcoholic in the family, they simply can't socialize without a drink, or two...
Bike crowds remind me of horse racing crowds and NASCAR.

That must have been an interesting survey. Did they fill that out survey while waiting for the bikes to come or after they already peddled by?

You know, 13% were already drunk while waiting for the bikes but 31% were drunk after they rode by according to 46% of the people they asked.

Submitted by dollaradayandfound on Fri, 03/30/2007 - 7:52pm.

The average family in PTC has 2 and 1/2 people old enough to be alcoholics. 25% divided by 2.5 = 10%
Which means approximately 10% of the people (adults) in this country are either alcoholics or need a drink often and soon will be.
It has to be looked at as a family however, since if one is an alcoholic they will bring the rest who will also have a drink to be sociable.
It never ceases to amaze me how many people can't reason, or don't want to if it is not advantageous to them!

So if everyone boozes it up, we’ll probably spend a lot of money enforcing laws against urinating in public.

What a bunch of whiners!!

The Tour de Georgia is a great event and a plus for Peachtree City. Go and enjoy the scene and the racers. I went to the morning start of the race last year in Fayettville and it was fun--family fun.

And so what if some public money is used for the event. If that is necessary to make it happen, that is fine. There is no need to sit by and wait for private money to make things happen.

And garbage? Pigs? Give me a break. The trash will be picked up. And if you want to save the city some money, come and help pick up the trash yourself.

What do you mean so what if public money is used? Public money is money that is taken from us forcibly and they're going to waste it on a sports event that will be televised with tremendous amounts of revenue going to the promoters and many of the bikers? Give me a stinking break. We the taxpayers demand our tax dollars be spent on strengthening our county and municipal services rather than subsidize an event that won't stand on it's own and that has a very limited appeal to the citizens of PTC.

I guess we're also subsidizing and event so Logsdon and his pals can booze it up on public property without getting hauled off to the pokey.

Personally I'm sick and tired of some people who probably pay very little in taxes justifying wasteful spending as long as they get to play.

Submitted by lion on Sat, 03/31/2007 - 7:50pm.

Public money taken from you forcibily? You poor thing. You pay taxes to live in a wonderful city like PTC. Taxes pay for many things which make PTC a good place to live--and can be used to help bring events here like Tour de Georgia.

Many of us pay signficant taxes but don't spend so much time complaining about it. Pretty presumptous of you to think you speak for "we the taxpayers" as if other taxpayers dare not disagree with you.

Sorry to hear you are so sick and tired. Why don't you come see the Tour de Georgia? It might cheer you up.

Submitted by skyspy on Sat, 03/31/2007 - 8:19pm.

Who doesn't pay taxes at all. This is a huge waste for something that is a non-event.

I did go last year what a boring group cluster of people riding together....race??? That's a laugh at best......They should be paying us, and reimbursing us for the cost of all of the police and extra firemen we will need to have on hand for this lack luster...slipshod "event". Not to mention a toll fee for using our city streets. They need to go away and stay away. Maybe they will take you as there welfare manager....since they don't have any money.

Funny how every major company in America sees this as the huge joke and waste of money that it is...that's why not one company will sponser this snoozer "event". Yet someone like you who doesn't pay taxes thinks it's a good thing.

Forcibly yes. Withhold from the gubament in protest and see what happens. Duh!

Taxes pay for many things which make PTC a good place to live--and can be used to help bring events here like Tour de Georgia

I agree that they can be used to bring events like the Tour de Waste to PTC. But that doesn't make it right. Why should the taxpayers involuntarily be forced to pay for the wasteful event which will provide no future benefit to the citizens of PTC?

Many of us pay signficant taxes but don't spend so much time complaining about it.

Many of us wouldn't complain about paying taxes if it wasn't wasted on useless crap like the Tour de Logsdon Beer Bash. Put the money into our infrastructure and our public services department. This is what we're paying our hard earned tax dollars for.

Pretty presumptous of you to think you speak for "we the taxpayers" as if other taxpayers dare not disagree with you.

Look at the board you fool. There is one of you and many of us. We get rather ticked at having to pay for luxuries that are fleeting and that few will benefit from or enjoy. I may be presumptous but you are a pompous and selfish ______ to justify massive amounts of our monies be wasted on a fleeting sports event that a month after now one will remember who won nor care.

Why don't you come see the Tour de Georgia?

No thanks. WHY?

When I was a kid, 4-10, I was amused by firecrackers, probably due to the noise and the fact that I didn't understand what made them blow up!
The lavish displays now done by politicians to light up the sky with an abundance of such explosions seem to be done, not because there is money to spend, but to aggrandise or coverup something which so many of us can't appreciate without such a show.
Personally, I can watch the tall ships come into New York harbor and understand the significance of it without blowing up powder in the sky to impress, not the individuals in the crowd, but the crowd itself!
Rock concerts are another good example of trying to make something worthwhile by unceasing explosions, when without the fireworks and distractions, carefully choreographed with the "musicans" antics, excite the "crowd" no matter what quality the singing and playing entails.
Reminds me of the fertility dances and the incessant drums of old.
