Drop Ann Coulter

JeffC's picture

It is time for The Citizen to drop Ann Coulter’s column and replace it with one from a responsible journalist. Does The Citizen endorse the following quotes? Is this the best spokesperson for conservatism The Citizen can find?

“I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word "faggot", so I — so kind of an impasse, can't really talk about Edwards.”

“The ethic of conservation is the explicit abnegation of man's dominion over the Earth. The lower species are here for our use. God said so: Go forth, be fruitful, multiply, and rape the planet — it's yours. That's our job: drilling, mining and stripping. Sweaters are the anti-Biblical view. Big gas-guzzling cars with phones and CD players and wet bars — that's the Biblical view.”

“God gave us the earth. We have dominion over the plants, the animals, the trees. God said, 'Earth is yours. Take it. Rape it. It's yours.' “

“They're [Democrats] always accusing us of repressing their speech. I say let's do it. Let's repress them. Frankly, I'm not a big fan of the First Amendment.”

“I think our motto should be, post-9-11, 'raghead talks tough, raghead faces consequences.' “

“The presumption of innocence only means you don't go right to jail.”

“When contemplating college liberals, you really regret once again that John Walker is not getting the death penalty. We need to execute people like John Walker in order to physically intimidate liberals, by making them realize that they can be killed, too. Otherwise, they will turn out to be outright traitors.”

“Would that it were so! ... That the American military were targeting journalists.”

“My only regret with Timothy McVeigh is he did not go to the New York Times building.”

“[Learning difficulties are a cover for] rich parents with dumb kids...That's why 'Pinch' Sulzberger, the publisher of The New York Times, is alleged to have dyslexia - because he's retarded.”

“Which brings me to this week's scandal about No Such Agency spying on 'Americans.' I have difficulty ginning up much interest in this story inasmuch as I think the government should be spying on all Arabs, engaging in torture as a televised spectator sport, dropping daisy cutters wantonly throughout the Middle East, and sending liberals to Guantanamo.”

“We need somebody to put rat poisoning in Justice Stevens's creme brulee. That's just a joke, for you in the media.”

“I think [women] should be armed but should not vote...women have no capacity to understand how money is earned. They have a lot of ideas on how to spend it...it's always more money on education, more money on child care, more money on day care.”

Speaking to disabled Vietnam veteran Bobby Muller: “No wonder you guys lost. “

“These broads are millionaires, lionized on TV and in articles about them, reveling in their status as celebrities and stalked by grief-arazzis... These self-obsessed women seemed genuinely unaware that 9/11 was an attack on our nation and acted as if the terrorist attacks happened only to them... I’ve never seen people enjoying their husbands’ deaths so much.”

“The Episcopals (sic) don't demand much in the way of actual religious belief. They have girl priests, gay priests, gay bishops, gay marriages — it's much like The New York Times editorial board. They acknowledge the Ten Commandments — or "Moses' talking points" — but hasten to add that they're not exactly "carved in stone.”

“My only regret with Timothy McVeigh is he did not go to the New York Times Building.”

Several of my liberal friends were horrified that I would ask that Ann Coulter’s column be dropped. They rightly point out that she is the ultimate polarizing figure and that while the Party faithful loves her, her extremism converts no one new to the Party.

American conservatism and the Republican Party sold its soul to the Coulters, Limbaughs, O'Reillys, and Michael Savages of the world to gain power, and now that its ideology has been exposed as empty and its leadership incompetent and corrupt, free-floating hatred is the only thing it has to offer. In what passes for conservatism today, the lunatic fringe is respectable. Potty mouth nihilists are the most sought after and highly paid speakers, able to rouse the Party faithful and bring them to paroxysms of glee with calls to murder political opponents, assassinate Supreme Court Justices, bomb public buildings and with cruel taunts of widows whose husbands were killed by terrorists. They have become so debased that these exhortations are celebrated as humor by people who don’t even recognize themselves as extremists.

But in mainstream America where elections are won, radicalism is fast losing fashion. And whether you like Ann Coulter or not, ask yourself this: Is the next thing Coulter says or writes which makes national news more likely to make decent people applaud or is it more likely to make them cringe?

So I am withdrawing my call to drop Coulter’s column. Let her represent the face of the Republican Party and be the poster child of conservatism. Bring it on Ann!

How about Al Franken? How about Bill Maher? Come on man... you're smarter than that sir.

I don't think Al Franken will actively drive people from the Party. I know Al personally and while I don't follow him closely, I don't know of anything he's said that even approaches the Coulter level, but I'm willing to be convinced if you have quotes from him. You probably know he is running for the Senate and I believe he will bring people into the Democratic Party. Bill Maher? Maybe.. I have only seen his show once and know virtually nothing about him. However, I did see Scarborough's show (former Republican Congressman by the way) where Joe said that he was on Maher's show at the time and that Maher had not said that about Cheney.

You are absolutely right Jeff. Al Franken will not actively drive people from the Democrat Party. Neither will Bill Maher. My point exactly. Al and Bill entertain and tell the members of the Democratic Party exactly what they want to hear.

Anne does same. She's not going to drive anyone of from the Republican Party either. I know Anne personally. Although I'm sure she doesn't remember me. Eye-wink Ok...so I shook her hand once. I can assure you that she's a sweetheart to most Conservatives because she calls it like she sees it......much like your guys do for you.

I don't know of anything he's said that even approaches the Coulter level

TEN AL FRANKEN QUOTES

10. I'm Al Franken. I hate you, and you hate me.
-- How Franken said he introduced himself to Karl Rove, Newsweek, March 29, 2004

9. I'm a bit of a shill for the Clinton Administration, which has its perks. I’m invited to all the inaugural balls.
-- Buffalo News, April 7, 1998

8. When I was first asked to speak at Hartford State Technical College, I jumped at the opportunity. Because, you see, I thought I had been asked to speak at Harvard, which would have been quite an honor. But instead, I am here with you, the nation’s future air conditioner repairmen.
-- Excerpt from the commencement address he gave to a technical college, Oh the Things I Know!, pp. 6-7

7. Making jokes about Terri Schiavo is one of the hardest things I've had to do as a humorist.
-- The Truth (With Jokes) p. 159

6. Nobody likes getting an abortion. Except, perhaps, rape victims.
-- The Truth (With Jokes) p. 124

5. If I put myself on the ballot and even 50 people voted for me, it'd be a travesty.
-- Interview with the Oregonian, Feb. 22, 1999

4. During Vietnam, I was in college, enjoying my student deferment. The government wisely felt that, in my case, military service was less important than completing my studies to prepare me for my chosen career: comedian.
-- The Truth (With Jokes), p. 97

3. I'm neutral in this race but I'm for freedom of speech, which means people should be able to assemble and speak without being shouted down.
-- After tackling heckler at DNC Event where Howard Dean was speaking, New York Post, Jan. 27, 2004

2. Minnesota Republican Norman Coleman is one of the administration's leading butt boys.
-- The Truth (With Jokes) p. 262

1. Republicans are shameless d**ks. No, that’s not fair. Republican politicians are shameless d**ks.
-- The Truth (With Jokes) p. 58

Get real, Do you think any of the Al Franken quotes approaches the viciousness of Coulter's quote about the 9/11 widows: “They believed the entire country was required to marinate in their exquisite personal agony. These broads are millionaires, lionized on TV and in articles about them, reveling in their status as celebrities and stalked by grief-arazzis. I've never seen people enjoying their husbands' deaths so much.”

However, I may not have been clear when referring to the Parties. The true partisans will not care or change but for those who are only marginally affiliated, and who are the swing votes in an election, maybe neither Ann nor Al will bring them in, but I believe that Ann has a good chance of alienating people from the Republican Party whereas I don't think that Al Franken alienates people from the Democratic Party.

If you don't agree to that, then how about this: I believe that the Democrats are going to be able to construe Ann as being much more of an extremist than the Republicans are going to be able to construe that about Al Franken (or anyone else). To that extent, it helps the Democrats to marginalize the Republicans from those who are tired of extremist politics and therefore helps the Democrats. Much like tying Michael Moore around the Democrat's necks helps the Republicans.

On Letterman, Al Franken Jokes About Execution for Treason of Rove, Libby and Bush

David Letterman: “The feeling was that this report made the administration's decision to go to war look bad-”

Al Franken: “Right. So they wanted to smear the guy who came back with the report, and so they out his wife and said she sent him there. This is essentially, you know, George H.W. Bush, the President's father, was the head of the CIA and he has said that outing a CIA agent is treason.”

Letterman: “It is treason, yes.”

Franken: “And so basically, what it looks like is going to happen is that Libby and Karl Rove are going to be executed."

[audience laughter over Letterman’s response]

Letterman, in mock indignation: “What? What! Really?”

Franken cautioned: “Yeah. And I don't know how I feel about it because I'm basically against the death penalty, but they are going to be executed it looks like.”

A bit later:

Letterman quipped: “The real crime is that there's an adult man walking around in the current administration named Scooter. I mean, we can agree on that, right?”

[Audience laughter]

Franken combined the liberal spin on the case with some humor: “That, but sooner or later he'll be executed, so that, and you worry about because the President at some, he said right away when Novak outed the CIA agent, Plame, said 'I want to get to the bottom of this.’ Well now Karl Rove is his right-hand man. Did he ask Karl? Did Karl lie to him? If so, we know he should have fired Karl by now so that, and did Karl tell the truth to him? In that case the President -- and I think, by the way, that we should never ever, ever, ever execute a sitting President.”

[Audience laughter]

Letterman: “It makes us look bad around the world, I think.”

Franken, in jest: “It would. It would be heartbreaking, I think, and I think that we should have a constitutional amendment.”

Letterman: “I see, yeah. Have we ever come close in the history to executing a seated President?”

Franken: “No, this will be the closest.”

Letterman: “This will be the closest, yeah.”

Franken: “Unless we get that amendment passed now.”

Now this stuff is "real comedy." It is obviously a play on words.
Rove's job is to give Bush "plausible deniability." He does that well, so far.
I don't think Gonzalez will prosecute the President however. All congress could do if they wanted to would be to send him back to Texas and put Cheney in as President, who would select Rove as VP rapidly before Pelosi could claim the throne.

These idiots who call themselves "entertainers" are republican radicals in sheeps clothing. They just need to admit it. However if they did, the party wouldn't allow them so much freedom, would they?
The only way that I can think of to put a stop to so much of this is to allow only thirty days to run for office and have five thousand signatures on a petition.
Then charge both sides for criticising the other on TV, radio, newspapers, and books, until the next election and the thirty days to do so. That way Coulter, Limburger, etc., would have to work for a living.

Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah....

Let's follow Dollar and each look up to the righteous and moral example of how we each should live. From this day out... me and my family will choose to worship the Democrat Party. No more Limburger...give me Franken. No more Hannity.... give me Sharpton. No more Coulter... instead I choose Bill Maher.

Good grief. Coulter calls Edwards a faggot and the world is coming to an end. The left compares Bush to Hitler and ... SO WHAT? Bill Maher complains because the Taliban was unsuccessful in kill Dick Cheney. SO WHAT?

Can't you fools see how stupid these blogs are starting to sound?

Cal can censor anyone here at his whim because he owns the place. I would have no objection to that at all and would not consider it an abridgement of free speech. However, I would strongly object to the government imposing censorship. We probably agree on this.

The difference between Ann C and Air America is that for every one nasty comment Ann makes, Liberal talk radio spews hundreds.

I don't hear any calls against Code Pink, Moveon.org, Bill Maher, Rosie O'Donnel, etc, etc,

I mean, it is not as if your father is a fa--ot or president or something. Get a grip. Ann Colter is a comedian just like Al Franken. She says stuff like this just so you and others react and show your stupidity. You liberals can sure dish it out by calling Bush a liar and comparing him to Hitler, but a little jab from the queen of mean and you go homophobic.

It must suck for people like jeffc and bladderq to know that there are opposing viewpoints out there. Their idea of debate is browbeating the opponent until they roll-over. Get rid of Foxnews, Coulter, Hannity, Limbaugh, and the rest because they aren't open-minded to fact that I don't like their opinions. What non-sense!

Michelle Malkinn, McCain, Giuliani criticized Ann harshly, but just like with Iraq, your side tends to ignore criticisms from conservatives so you can say "the left is against it." If your reality suits you, feel free to dwell there.

I must say Cal chooses not to run a great number of Ann's columns. I believe she is an embarrasment to conservatism. I was provoked to write Cal begging him to drop Ann after she blamed the female deputy for the actions of Brian Nichols in Atlanta a year and a half ago. She made the blanket statements that women were more prone to shoot without cause (over shoes) and did not have the emotional wherewithall to be trusted with guns(Among many other incredible statements.) I am amazed at how often conservatives here take great offense in what I say locally, contrary to their opinions, and whistle right by Limbaugh mocking Michael J. Fox, or calling Halle Berry and Obama "halfrican Americans." They completely ignore the "jokes" about "faggots" and even try to say the GOP is a big tent which accepts "Log Cabin" Republicans. I am amazed that we (collectively) give Ann a stage. Whenever the "family values mouthpiece" is a single 40 something female that says she lives on "red wine and cigarettes," you definitely have identity problems. We live in a confusing world where conservativism is hard to currently define. Lindsay Graham views last week's perjury conviction as "apples and oranges" to Clinton's perjury conviction. Newt views his adultery as being not as bad as Clinton's adultery, even though Bill salvaged his marraige. And it is very hard to attack the gay lifestyle when the Vice President lovingly supports his daughter's openly gay lifestyle. I wonder if Lynn Cheney thinks Ann Coulter's words were a "cheap and taudry trick." You remember how upset she was at the mere mention that her daughter was gay. It reminds me of the John Dean book, Conservatives Without Conscience. I truly hope they regain their moral footing. They can start with a divorce from Ann Coulter.

Cheers,

..the "family values mouthpiece" for conservative America. Whether you love her or hate her, she is without doubt one of the wittiest writers in the US --kind of the anti-Maureen Dowd or Molly Ivins (God rest her soul). If you have any kind of funny bone, you can't read Ann without chuckling at her snide and biting remarks. She is very much the H. L. Mencken of our age. Wikipedia says this about Mencken: "He captivated young intellectuals with total assurance and a delightfully hateful, but no less erudite style."

That's Ann: delightfully hateful.

Submitted by AF A-10 on Sun, 03/11/2007 - 5:22pm.

I'm not sure how much wit is involved in calling someone a "faggot" or berating widows by saying they enjoyed their husbands' deaths. I'm not clear on what is intellectually gained by suggesting the poisoning of liberal supreme court judges, or the bombing of the New York Times. The wit and humor in that escape me, as it escaped Michele Malkin, John McCain, Rudy Giuliani, and somewhere around 7 of her former sponsors and half a dozen of her former news papers. If all it takes to be considered "one of the wittiest writers in the US" is to hurl insults, that is a sad testament to the US state of academia. I imagine your opinion is not very widely shared. Time will, however, be Ann's ultimate judge. I did find it interesting that, though Fox News saw no humor in John Kerry's "stuck in Iraq joke", they were very quick to come to Ann's defense with the harmless gay epithet. Go figure...

Cheers to you,

Kevin "Hack" King
