College and the school of common sense

Just because you don't have a degree, doesn't mean you wouldn't be a good cop. As a matter of fact, sometimes, it means just the opposite. Common sense is the most valuable tool that a cop can have.
I am not knocking the degree, I am just stating what I have seen from experience. Its like the law, its never black and white. Its always gray. The law is a living breathing thing which changes constantly by caselaw. Having a degree doesn't automatically make you a better Officer.
Now, take our county for example. While the counties around us have experienced incredible jumps in crime in the last ten years, look at Fayette. Why do you think this county had remained relatively safe and a good place to raise your family?
Do you think its because some College somewhere taught an officer on how to be a cop? I don't think so.
Its because of the reputation of our Sheriff and the excellent judges that we have here. You can say what you want about the "Good Ole boy" system, but, truth be known, that is what has protected our citizens for the last thirty years.
Having a degree is just another tool in the toolbox. It can't hurt to be educated. But, without common sense, you end up with a College Educated Idiot. Carrying a gun.

That is very true in many professions. A little common sense goes a long way.

Many of us are still afraid of the cop who is going to lose it, while explaining the law to us.

I have never been rude to a cop, and never would be....but I'm still afraid of being beat up. Where I grew up if you were polite to the officer you always got off with a warning.(if you were a county resident) I'm always grateful and thankful when I encounter a good cop.

Cops have so much power, and it only takes one bad apple to spoil the whole bunch.

Most of the "older"(my age and up) officers that I have met here probably don't have a college degree, but they are certified officers and they have experience, and as you said common sense. They have kept us safe for many years, let's hope that continues.

Bob Nardelli was a college grad. He raped Home Depot investors of $210 on the way out the door. College can have a significant effect on such outcomes.

I'm a stockholder in Home Depot. His "seperation agreement" was basically agreed to when he was hired. The Board only did what they had agreed to. It was simply a matter of living up to the contract.

All that said, most folks would agree, a College Degree is very desirable, in almost all circumstances. It certainly helped Nardelli. Smiling

I've been pushing for a raise! Perhaps I need to change my strategy? Do you suppose you could find this salesman's phone number so I can get some pointers?

Wow, the incompetent sales clerk story kind of makes you wonder why you own HD stock McDonoughDawg.

I'm thinking there has to be more to the story than that. The piece was labeled as "satire". Not saying it's not true, but it's hard to believe, that's for sure.

McDonoughDawg if you're a stockholder, I suggest you go to a rape crisis center immediately.

You got my point though, Nardelli's advanced education gave him the skills he needed to achieve a new level of greed at the expense of the little people.
