College and the school of common sense
Just because you don't have a degree, doesn't mean you wouldn't be a good cop. As a matter of fact, sometimes, it means just the opposite. Common sense is the most valuable tool that a cop can have.
I am not knocking the degree, I am just stating what I have seen from experience. Its like the law, its never black and white. Its always gray. The law is a living breathing thing which changes constantly by caselaw. Having a degree doesn't automatically make you a better Officer.
Now, take our county for example. While the counties around us have experienced incredible jumps in crime in the last ten years, look at Fayette. Why do you think this county had remained relatively safe and a good place to raise your family?
Do you think its because some College somewhere taught an officer on how to be a cop? I don't think so.
Its because of the reputation of our Sheriff and the excellent judges that we have here. You can say what you want about the "Good Ole boy" system, but, truth be known, that is what has protected our citizens for the last thirty years.
Having a degree is just another tool in the toolbox. It can't hurt to be educated. But, without common sense, you end up with a College Educated Idiot. Carrying a gun.
