Please, Just Consider A Shelter Critter

SouthernBelle's picture

I have been looking into getting a dog for our family for about three years now. We decided on a few breeds that we liked, namely, the Great Dane, the Neopolitan Mastiff, and the Cane Corso. We started looking up breeders of all three, and found locals for all three. Then, I had an epiphany. What about all the shelter animals? Every single day millions of pets are put down, many in ways that are so cruel, it would make a man cry. Dogs placed in dark, cold metal boxes, on top of each other, crying out, and then they turn on the gas. The crying slowly fades, and then, just when you think its over, they bring in the puppies, and put the puppies on top of the older dogs they JUST killed, and the puppies cry, they don't understand. Then the lid is closed, and they cry to get out, then they turn on the gas, and the crying stops. Then, a trash pick-up truck comes and picks up the dark, metal box, and dumps it into the garbage truck, right along with all your trash from your own home, then they are taken to a landfill, and tossed away; and for what? Because of an irresponsible owner? Or maybe it was a responsible owner who just wanted to have "one litter" and that litter can't be sold or given away, and if they are, what if the people you sell or give them to don't alter their puppy? That creates even more of a problem. Now, I'm not a PETA freak, I'll tell you, I eat meat, and there's nothing like a good steak. But these are dogs, and cats, and they need us. If you alter your pets, then that stops the cycle of over population. Please, I am begging, if you want to get a new pet, please go to the shelter. Look up the numbers for Coweta County's animal control, or Fayette County's. The numbers are grim, and its so sad that people go to the mall and get a puppy, and don't realize what that puppy's mother is going through, or went through, not to mention what that puppy has been through. Puppy mills provide for pet stores, and puppy mills are too vile to even imagine. Do your own research. Contrary to popular belief, PETA is an organization looking out for pets and animals. Google "Puppy Mill" and see for yourself. I guess I'm just trying to get people to stop the breeders from taking away homes from other pets. For every dog or cat you purchase from a breeder, you've condemned a shelter animal to death. Think about it, please. They need us. If you can't adopt, VOLUNTEER! They need us.

I know you're hearts in the right place and I appreciate it that you're not some PETA wacko. You bring up some good points.

But respectfully, you speak of adopting a dog and incurring the expense of feeding and caring for it. Would that be a wise choice at this time in lieu of the financial predicaments you and your family are facing?

Our research a few years ago, prior to the financial struggles. We know we can't afford a dog right now, but we still look at the pound about once a week, knowing full well that we DON'T need one yet, but we still look often.

You've been in my thoughts lately with the issues your family has had to face. God be with you.

Kind. I can't even thank you enough for thinking of us. Its been tough, but we're working on it! We MAY have the settlement soon, and that would really be a big help. I just LOVE the hurry up and wait thing with Workers' Comp! Again, thanks for your thoughts and prayers.

Sorry about the hassle with the Workers Comp. Sometimes I wonder how well it would function if the deadbeats weren't raping it. Too many times those that have legit needs and rights to it are the ones that are victimized by the red tape. Gee...I wonder why the red tape is sooo needed.

You are! I know personally, a person who has "taken" the WC system. Its so sad, my husband is in pain every single day with his back, but its not bad enough for surgery, but too bad to return to full duty at work, and he only has ONE occupation...he's a surveyor, has been for years, and they aren't even willing to retrain him so he can continue to work with his company! They wouldn't be trying to come up with a "fair" settlement if they would just retrain him to do something in the office. (They've done it before for others, just not my husband, even though he's done everything for them, including missing his son's first few months of life!) I'm just at the end of my rope with all this, thank Gawd it is ALMOST over!
