Computer Trespass

Your quote:
I was able to get in to OldSchoolFootball's account (comcast)and get RightOnTheMoney's account (gov. email addy and IP) after I was pinged by them or at least one of them.

You may want to consider spending more time learning the law rather than breaking it:

16-9-93
(b) Computer Trespass.
Any person who uses a computer or computer network with knowledge that such use is without authority and with the intention of:
(1) Deleting or in any way removing, either temporarily or permanently, any computer program or data from a computer or computer network;

(2) Obstructing, interrupting, or in any way interfering with the use of a computer program or data; or

(3) Altering, damaging, or in any way causing the malfunction of a computer, computer network, or computer program, regardless of how long the alteration, damage, or malfunction persists

shall be guilty of the crime of computer trespass.

I would urge Cal to save the IP logs for oldschool and mainframecpu's accounts on a separate server for the purposes of criminal prosecution. It really does not matter if somebody pinged you, logging onto their account is a crime. Also, if the logs are mysteriously gone in the morning by the time Cal has a chance to save them, I would be very worried mainframe.

Can someone more knowledgeable than me about this stuff offer a clear explanation? How am I harmed if I am "pinged"? How can I know if this has happened? And how can I prevent it?

Submitted by RealSecurity on Fri, 11/10/2006 - 9:31am.

A ping is a single data packet sent from one computer to another. This is usually to determine if the remote computer is online. So the first computer says "Hey, are you there?" and the second one says "I'm here".

This CPU person cannot take over your computer or account just by receiving a ping from you.

However, he/she could:
1 - Trick users into giving him/her their login info
2 - potentially break the applications that makes TheCitizen.com work. (thus revealing ALL user account login/password info)
3 - Guess weak passwords

2 of these are trivial, the 3rd a little more challenging but would only be another 30 minutes of work.

I've extended my personal challenge in a previous comment. I have yet to receive a response.

Why are you pretending to be some kind of genius and trying to scare people who know little about the net? You eed help....get it soon.

I'm not pretending to be "some kind of genius" and I'm definitely not trying to scare anyone. Quite the opposite. I work in internet security. I deal with hackers all day long. It's what I do. Just because you don't know a threat exists, doesn't make you safe. In my post, I simply pointed out 3 ways an account *could* be hacked. Right now, this MainFrameCPU guys seems to have folks up in arms. He/She signs on as different users. I'm simply calling him/her out, and only answered the question about pinging.

Thanks for playing though.

If you have remote viewing software installed - one could actually 'take over' your computer. Most of you do not have this installed unless you are on a LAN or WAN that uses it for tech support.

RealSecurity you are Citizen.com aren't you?

I must trust that a newspaper wouldn't play your stupid games. Good for lawsuits.

not real. Smiling

No, I'm not with Citizen.com.

I just get to do Internet security all day, every day and got a little excited when I found out that our little community may have a wily hacker for me to play with Smiling

For cracking passwords Brutus is still hard to beat. For gathering IP addresses - I'll let you find your own software- I have my favorite - I bet you do too RealSecurity.

Concerned Citizen is overly concerned and quite anal. I think the OldSchool called him a 'busy-body' . Maybe she was Barney Fife in a previous life Eye-wink
