The alleged illegal student athlete

Michael Boylan's picture

According to Sam Sweat, the Assistant Superintendent of Operations for the Fayette County Board of Education, the home of the student that everyone has been referring to was foreclosed on towards the end of September/the beginning of October. This triggered the Families in Transition Act and gave the family 30 days to find a home in Fayette County. They did. It is in the Sandy Creek school district but special permission was granted to the students in the home to remain at Whitewater because they are both seniors. Sweat stated that he would do the same thing for any senior student in a similar situation.

Over 180 out of district at WHS - only 70 are employees kids.

Therefore over 110 special permission kids are not employees children.

Who are they?
why are they there?
Where should they be?
How many are out of Fayette county?
Why are they allowed to attend an overcrowded school?
How much does that cost the tax payer ($7,500 each/year)?
How can those being re-districted have the same permission to stay?
How many are seniors? Underclassman?
How many trailers does WHS have?

As a WHS faculty member I would like to let you know that we also have questions regarding the exceedingly large amount of special permission kids (employees kid's aside). We wonder, as do you, why permission is granted over and over again when we are clearly overcrowded.

Is there anything we can do to help get some of the strays out of your building and back to where they belong?

I was told your armed 'visitors' today were from a neighboring county and were there for a girl on special permission. Do you know if that's true?

Thanks-

are these kids out of county? or out of district, or would you know?

I don't know about all of the kids, but the few that I do know about live in the county, and I hate to say it, but several are in your school zone. I have no idea how they obtained their permission, what excuses they used, or from whom they obtained it. We're not given that kind of information. Usually we find out they're special permission by the kid accidently telling us. It's very frustrating. It especially bothers me because not only do I work in Fayette County, I live in Brooks and WHS is the home school for my kids. I could just scream. My older children (who have already graduated) went to FCHS and then SMHS when it opened and then what happened....my younger children are redistricted out of the SMHS complex. Now, we finally have a school of our own (Brooks has waited a LONG time for this) and it's overflowing with special permission kids. Not that I'm against special permission, but I truly believe that each case needs to be scrutinized by a group of parents that represent the county as a whole.

You people talk like it costs money to teach a kid at one school, but not at another. Strange. Most of the bill is paid by the state, not the county. Why is it so hard for some to understand that a certain constant costs are at every school. The 7000 dollars is a farce number. It does cost some much smaller number at the actual school the student attends, but some other school is making that money, aren't they? Now, if a new school is built solely for the purpose of teaching too many out of district students, and their proper school could have handled them, then that is wrong.
However, we do pay administrators to make these kind of decisions for a multitude of reasons.

I think you are alone in your opinion. And I think you should look in to the incident today at WHS - CC kids coming to check on their homies. Nice.

each school gets funding for the number of students enrolled. So....Yes it does cost more money for out of county kids and for out of district kids it takes away from the school they should attend. And every child that they have in a special education program or Ld program... they get even more....Why do you think so many kids are being diagnosed by the schools with some type of handicapp or learning disability...More Money!!!!

who some of the students are and why they have permission to go to WHS, but I can't. I might get my source in trouble! I will tell you this....a lot of it is who you know and/or your law suit (or threat thereof).

That's the problem, it's who they know. How can you sue over which school your child attends? They have boundary lines for a reason (or at least I thought they did).

I bet if someone investigated this, they would find that most of the 110 are underclassmen. They were granted "their" special requests to attend WMS over 3 years ago, therefore allowing them entrance into WHS. Some live as far north as New Hope Road. I did not like it then, and I do not like it now. Some are atheletes, some are not.
WHS does not have any trailers, yet. Probably to come soon. As early as next year. New development coming to Brooks-Woolsey Rd. and lots are being sold off of South 85 Conn. Not to mention the new development at corner of Antioch/Brooks-Woolsey Rd. Makes you wonder how I, just a citizen know all of this and the BOE can't comprehend that the south end of Fayette is growing. All WITHIN the WHS district.

I started out as a journalism major - you asked some good basic questions.

Any way we can get you to work for this 'paper'?

How many are playing football for WHS? We know of 1-how many others are there?

Submitted by OldSchoolFootball on Wed, 11/08/2006 - 11:34am.

The dates are a bit off but the 'facts' are 'generally' accurate.

Eviction actually occured before the forecloser (for those who care)in August.

The student DID indeed live in Clayton County for more than the '30' day period that is allowed (Some of Aug., all Sept, most of Oct).

Now the student, along with a few others, is back in the county and lives in the Sandy Creek district.

The family rents a home owned by a Whitewater coach, ((Name Witheld)).

It is not unusual to allow a student to finish their senior year even if they move.

The student's family was forced to move back in to the county by public pressure (which may indeed be unfair)and fear of reprisal.

Thank you Michael Boylan for folowing through(although it sure did take you a while)!

You are right, I checked with the FBOE and was told August, and the same things you are saying last week and posted it. I know you are right, and I also say the same thing...when MB didn't come through with the story as he stated he was going to, it only made it worse. I don't think the family would have moved back except they possibly were ..not...paying the tution. When you start a school year in Fayette and move and they find out...If they are ...not overcrowded..(I don't know about seniors), you are given the option to pay and stay for the rest of the year. No pay...no stay..

What is the reason for allowing so many out of district children? I thought I saw somewhere it was over 100.

Submitted by head_ragg on Wed, 11/08/2006 - 1:17pm.

and we don't either..wish we did know how many out of county and for what reasons.
