How these blogs and comments work?

Apparently, old comments are eliminated according to how many there are, not how long ago they were posted: therefore, we miss many when a great number are posted, and see some that are a day or two old on the weekends when nobody much participates.
I mean if you post a comment in the morning and it is gone by the evening, what good is that? I get tired of reading answers to posts that no longer exist after maybe only 12 hours! Blogs on the other hand seem to be available, but if you pick out and old one to respond to, nobody knows what you are talking about! Is this thing for everyone to participate, or for two people to talk to one another?

Blogs just don't work that way.
