Football fans - cool itFriday night's game between Starr's Mill and Whitewater was one of the best I have seen in my eight years covering sports in this area. I assume that if you were in the crowd Friday night, you would agree with that assessment, regardless of which side you are on. Starr's Mill looked awesome for much of the game - particularly Robby Davis. He was explosive running the ball for touchdowns, punted well and played great on defense, recovering a fumble. I don't care who you are or what level of football you are watching, you don't see a performance like that everyday. In addition, the defense played well too. They didn't let the Whitewater offense do too much - other than two big and very costly plays. Whitewater had a rough start and they didn't look especially good on offense, but they hung in there and got the big plays when they needed them. That is the sign of a good team and a good coaching staff. Whitewater's defense played well and didn't let things get out of hand, when they easily could have. As for penalties, any coach will tell you that they are a part of the game. Sometimes they go your way and sometimes they don't. Blaming the refs doesn't do anybody any good and once the game moves on, nothing is going to change. Somebody mentioned it in a previous post, but the sportsmanship of both teams should be praised. These kids gave it their all and kept their jawing after plays to a minimum. I noticed that all the players and coaches shook hands at the end without going all Miami/Florida International. As for the rumors that Tavoris Dixon is a Clayton County resident, I talked with C.W. Campbell and asked about the high school students affidavits. He said he could not tell me who was being audited and wouldn't answer a blogger's rumor, but also stated that the high school audits would be done within the week of us speaking - which leads me to believe that they have found no wrong doing. If they do find it, it will be a huge story. I promise you. Regardless, let's remember this is high school football. Honor the efforts that every student athlete gives and try to relax. It's great when your team wins and it's sad when your team loses, but life moves on ...very quickly. While I'm sure the players and coaches appreciate all the support that you give them, they would also ask that you exhibit the same good sportsmanship that they do week in and week out.
