Impatient Killers!

I don’t know what the cause of yesterday’s accident on I-85 S, before Exit 61, was but I have a good suspicion that another rude, impatient driver caused it, like it has happened so many times in the same place. Perfectly nice people turn into demons when they get behind the wheel and endanger their and everyone else’s lives around them. All, because they can’t bear waiting their turn and have to prove something (maybe how uncivilized they are) by trying to get ahead of as many law-abiding people as they can. I have been commuting from Peachtree City to Atlanta for 12 years and everyday, taking exit 61 is the most dangerous part of my trip. I see it almost everyday; people trying to get ahead of the line of cars in the exit lane by speeding in the adjacent lane and when they find a car-length gap, slam on their brakes with absolutely no regards for the vehicles following them or the vehicles adjacent to them. I wish these people would come to their senses and at least think about how dangerous this is to them, never mind other people. I hope the charred asphalt on I-85 will be a reminder to these people to be more courteous drivers. I feel sorry for the 2 people who lost their lives yesterday and even more for their families. My condolences to them. I just hope no one else will have to go through a similar thing again.
PLEASE, slow down and be more courteous and careful drivers. You will live longer!

Same people usually do this every day. Most are from Michigan or Illinois, originally. Some maybe New York, originally. But basically the problem isn't where they learned to be asses, but the fact that they are geniuine selfish bullies; trying to take advantage to the extreme to get back at someone that they can't control at work or home. It has been proved many times that such jumping can only "possibly" delete 3 to 4 minutes from a 30 mile trip if everything goes your way. Usually you catch them 3 to 4 traffic lights down the road. It is a psychological thing, unfortunately. Only on rare occasion does a traveler from out of state miss a sign and have to try to do that---even then it is dangerous.

I don't know which makes me madder... the line jumpers, or the drivers who LET them line jump.

Same thing at the 54/74 intersection, when the longhorn corner folks are trying to turn right at the yield sign, onto 54wb. They have a YIELD to on-coming traffic sign, yet keep moving. And there are always idiot on-coming traffic drivers who LET them in. It isn't like they aren't ever going to get their turn... they CAN wait.

Some don't ask to be let in: they just cut in at high speed. You either hit them or hit your brakes. Costs too much hospital bills and insurance to crash them. Ain't christian (or jewish for that matter) anyway.

It is the self-important idiots who cut over at the last second. God forbid these "important people" would wait in line.

I travel this route every week. I always catch up to them at the light at the top of the ramp. It doesn't take nearly as long as you suggessted.

I never see state patrol at that exit......maybe they will start to catch these "important people".

I get on I-85 at Union City and then have to take the left ramp over onto I-285 West.

Some mornings, the ramp onto I-285 bottlenecks because of the traffic at the end merging from the right lane into the left.

I **HATE** it when people who are backed up in the left lane decide to shoot over into the right lane to move ahead of the line and then squeeze back in to the left at the last minute.

DON"T THEY SEE THAT THIS NEED TO MERGE BACK IN IS THE CAUSE OF THE BOTTLENECK IN THE FIRST PLACE?

I think I'm generally a pretty nice guy. But when I get up to the end and one of those people is next to me and trying to squeeze back in, I ride the bumper of the car in front of me to make their re-entry as difficult as I can.

I've dubbed that right lane the "idiot lane."

We used to call them “non-drivers”. I still do. They would have road rallies in D.C twice a day.

I have always wanted to own a 69 Impalla, two door, puke green white top with snow tires when I had to commute in D.C.

Talk about the ultimate urban assault vehicle.

Hehehe!!!! My husband drives a 69 Chevy pick up to work every day. We moved to PTC from the north side to get out of the congestion and even though the flow of traffic is much lighter commuting from PTC to downtown Atlanta, we have found there are more little fender benders and rude drivers on this side of Atlanta! Anyway, my husband's SUV was hit three times in one year, no fault of his......he went out and bought a 69 Chevy pick up that he keeps in excellent running condition. People in our neighborhood just stare and turn their heads when they see him driving the old truck!

I would laugh too, but it is not funny in the least. I have never understood why the GA State Patrol did not park at the top of the ramp and hand out a couple of hundred tickets for improper lane changing, following too close etc. They probably could catch several drunks, drug dealers, and other felons in the bargain. Sure it would tie up traffic and people would wail, but at the end of the day it just might prevent an event like yesterday. Seems like a simple straightforward solution.

Before you write me a ticket for following too closely, perhaps I should clarify.

By the time traffic has reached the top of the ramp to merge onto I-285, and where the people in the Idiot Lane are trying to get back into the left, traffic is at a crawl if not a stand still.

I don't think that either the Idiot Lane people or indignant people like me who close the gap by tailgating have the potential for causing anything more than a minor fender bender.

But, MAN, am I ever tired of this commute! I used to teach at a college in a small midwestern town where I biked--and sometimes walked--to work.

Smiling

It would cause much less traffic congestion and be fun at the same time.
