Board of Education swears in new members

New Fulton County Board of Education member Liz Hausmann (District 5) and re-elected members Katie Reeves (District 2), Zenda Bowie (District 6), and Julia Bernath (District 7) were sworn in at a special ceremony December 10 at Dunwoody Springs Elementary School. Judge Pinkie Toomer of the Fulton County Probate Court presided.

Hartsfield prepares for new screening measures

For several months officials at Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport have been working diligently with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the airlines to modify facilities for new screening equipment. The modifications were made in preparation of the TSA 100 percent baggage screening deadline.

SFMC approved for renovations

South Fulton Medical Center received final approval for its Certificate of Need from the Georgia Department of Community Health on December 24, 2002 to invest $8 million to enhance services to residents of the south metro Atlanta area with the addition of a new emergency department.

Fire guts Fayette Daily News office

A part of Fayette County's history went up in smoke early Thursday morning as a fire destroyed the building that houses the Fayette Daily News in Fayetteville.

Community Meeting Planned For New Sandtown Middle School

An informational meeting will be held January 21, for the community to learn about features of a new middle school being built adjacent to A. Philip Randolph Elementary School in south Fulton County. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Randolph Elementary, located at 5320 Campbellton Road SW in Atlanta.

Tax Lien Sales: Money & Politics

In 1994, tax lien sales became big business in Fulton County when former Chairman Mitch Skandalakis and former Mayor Bill Campbell sold $27,665,615.53 in delinquent taxes to National Tax Funding, including liens of the elderly.

Mandatory driving tests begin

Beginning this month, the Department of Motor Vehicle Safety will initiate mandatory on-the-road driving tests for anyone getting their first Class D driver's license. In the past, many applicants were only required to pass a series of maneuvers among cones in a secluded parking lot driving course.

South Fulton students to share in new arts program

The arts program in south Fulton has received an enormous boost thanks to an innovative $40,000 grant funded though the Arthur Blank Family Foundation.

Local teams split in first night back after break

Tuesday night marked the beginning of the second half of the high school basketball season and the local boys and girls teams split in all of the games. Sandy Creek, McIntosh and East Coweta's girls won, as did Fayette County and Starr's Mill's boys.

Panthers edge out Tigers in county duals meet

The four high school wrestling teams from Fayette County met for the annual county dual meet Tuesday night and Starr's Mill emerged victorious once again. But it was close.

Candy Cane Sprint results sweet for SCAT

SCAT swimmers finished first at the SCAT Candy Cane Sprint, a dual meet with the Carrollton Bluefins Dec. 21 at Kedron Pool.
