Panthers edge out Tigers in county duals meet

The four high school wrestling teams from Fayette County met for the annual county dual meet Tuesday night and Starr's Mill emerged victorious once again. But it was close.

Starr's Mill defeated Sandy Creek 76-0, McIntosh 74-0 and Fayette County 32-23 to win the county meet.

Fayette County beat Sandy Creek 69-10 and defeated McIntosh 71-7.

County champs, wrestlers who went 3-0 at the meet, for Starr's Mill were Michael Cosper (125), Davey Woods (135), Nick Bennett (152), Kyle Verzello (160) and Jordan Powers (171). Other wrestlers who went undefeated were: at 103, Corey Radcliffe (1-0); at 112, Devon King (2-0) and Ryan Jones (1-0); at 119, Chase Verzello (2-0) and Aaron Thompson (1-0); at 140, David Drake (1-0); at 145, Scott Molleson (2-0) and Tyler Freeman (1-0); and at 189, Ben Griffin (1-0).

County champs for Fayette County were Thomas Lowery (103), Matt Kellerman (130), Zach Stanley (140), Will Barnes (189), Chris Leslie (215) and Drake McCoy (275).

McIntosh, which placed fourth, entered the meet with several of the regular starters missing or injured. Coach Nick Bellantoni mentioned that several wrestlers wrestled well: Cameron Hall, Jeff Patrie, Chris Cool and Ryne Rushing.

All four county teams will be busy this weekend. Starr's Mill will wrestle in the Carpet Classic in Dalton, Fayette County will wrestle in the Christian Brothers tournament in Memphis, Tenn., and McIntosh and Sandy Creek will compete in the Alexander Duals tonight and the Alexander Invitational on Saturday.
