Football picks - week two

Steve Brown’s picks - 6-2 last week

• Fayette Co. (0-1) vs. Jonesboro (0-1)
What happened to Fayette County last week? Maybe it was the recent announcement of the SAT scores. They will step it up a notch this week, it’s FAYETTE COUNTY!

• McIntosh (0-1) vs. East Coweta (0-1)
My beloved McIntosh team needs to start bulking up, eat a big breakfast, lunch, dinner I and dinner II at home. EAST COWETA will take it based on the momentum from hearing the news of their new mega-development in East Coweta off TDK.

• Landmark (1-0) @ Ola (0-1)
Amazing Grace How Sweet the Sound. It’s LANDMARK CHRISTIAN!

• Starr's Mill (1-0) vs. Rockdale Co. (0-0-1)
Big wheels keep on move’n, STAAAAARR’S MILL will keep on grove’n, Roll’n, Roll’n, Roll’n over Rockdale.

• Sandy Creek (1-0) @ Whitewater (1-0)
You are making me panic on this one. It’s the big boys from Sandy Creek versus the “Remember the Titans” Whitewater team. I flipped a coin – it’s SANDY CREEK!

• UGA (1-0) @ USC (1-0)
My dawgs always have trouble with USC. South Carolina could be 0-7 and they would still give the dawgs a headache. Who is going to play quarterback? I hope it’s the freshman Stafford. Too many letters on the back of the jersey: T-e-r-e-s-h-i-n-s-k-i. Larry Munson is having trouble pronouncing his name in clutch situations; that could be a problem. Remember that freshman named Herschel Walker? Get Stafford in there! It’s UGA by a six!

• Georgia Tech (0-1) vs. Samford
The jackets almost got the best of Notre Dame. The loss left them saddened, dejected and ready to beat the stuffing out of Samford. TECH will hold back the tears from the loss to the Irish and ground Samford into dust!

• Falcons vs. Panthers
Do the Falcons have any receivers yet? It’s pretty bad when your tight end is the team’s leading receiver. Falcon kicker Michael Koenen is going to die of leg cramps from handling punting, field goals and kick offs. Arthur Blank could make this season Coach Mora’s farewell year in Atlanta if things do not improve from last year. It looks more like chaos than the “west coast offense.” Hopefully, Michael Vick will run the Panther defense into the ground. It’s the FALCONS (but not by much)!

Other than that, Richt knows when Stafford needs to play. He's forgotten more football than Steve Brown will ever know.

I like how we keep underestimating Whitewater, but they will defeat Sandy Creek with good defense and a lot of offense. If the game was played at the Creek, I can see the coin flip, but the Wildcats have the home field advantage. The game of the year will be Whitewater at Starrs Mill, get there early! All other county games for Whitewater will be yawners!
The Dawgs should start Stafford, but we should not write off Tereshinski yet, give the kid a chance. We will see how he looks Saturday as opposed to the overrated scrimmage they had against Western Kentucky.
I like all your other picks.

Whitewater has never even played a region game! With 42 seniors they better have a great year because it will never get any better for them than this year should be. I know that they have already comitted two huge violations in the county (this season) (1) They were admonished for trying to recruit students who attend Starr's Mill by CW Campbell and (2) were in the end zone of the Starr's Mill/ Cherokee Dome game filming the game.... with two cameras ! For those of you unfamilar with GHSA rules - a HUGE no-no. I don't think you can say anyone has underestimated a team with 42 seniors who is one of the largest 4AAAA schools in the area and is willing to cheat to get a win. Sandy Creek (a AAA team) will play hard and may win, but win, lose or draw thay will do it with less than 42 seniors and no ethical violations this season. Go Patriots!

Old school with old excuses, "it's not fair, you guys are cheating". In case you did not know, all schools recruit and film, this is not a trend started by WHS! No doubt region play will be different from our first three years, however, this team should not be mentioned in the same breath as Fayette and McIntosh, they are much better than that. And they will beat Sandy Creek!

Sandy Creek AAA - 13
Whitewater AAAA - 10

Enough said.

and believe me, turnovers killed WW's game. They made the better big plays all evening. Sandy Creek played well enough and got the advantage of a turnover that resulted in their first touchdown.

Whitewater is for real.

I'll remind you of the Creek's scores during the season, let see how long you can beat your drum. Obviously you can't win with class.

Go Wildcats!!!

I can see that you disagree with Steve Brown (and me) for loyalty reasons and that's fine. As for "cheating", you obviously don't know anything about the GHSA, why it exists, or what it does. Yes, filming is allowed - but ONLY your own games. The standard fine for illegal filming in the GHSA is $1000. Since you don't know that, maybe the coaches that are scouting with pen and paper and legally trading game film(s) before games will make sense to you now. As for the "everybody does it" excuse for recruiting active players from other schools..... maybe you should re-examine your ethical and moral standards a little closer. At a cost of $7000 per student, inviting kids to come play football from other schools is, at minimum, unethical. Students who transfer are subject to eligibility restrictions. Seems to me that the 'Blue Devil' coaches at Whitewater need to learn the GHSA standards if they want to coach 4AAAA high school. As for me, I will wait to see what the record looks like for Whitewater after they have played in the region for four years. The 42 seniors will be gone, the program will be (because they didn't play region schedules for three years) seven years old (which means that other teams will legitimately have tape on them and their trends) and then we can begin to see what kind of program they really have. I wouldn't be so fast to crown Whitewater king of all they survey. I remember Starr's Mill going to the dome with their first senior class for the state finals. Let's see if the Widcats can at least match that small feat before they are crowned the kings of football. Now you know a little something about old school football and the GHSA.

It sounds like there has been some rule infringement here. High school athletics shouldn't be a cheater-take-all thing. I'm disappointed to hear about this kind of activity.

Perhaps some public exposure would stop the terrible practice for good.

GOOD QUESTION - Maybe you should keep asking it!!

Submitted by people4u on Thu, 09/07/2006 - 10:23am.

You make some good points, however, where did you get the information on these allegations of improprieties? I have kids at WH Sand nothing has been said, have not seen anything reported locally either. I don’t see any harm in asking a kid to move to your district and play with you, it seems too strict, but you are right, I’m not familiar with the GHSA rules and maybe it covers this issue in there somewhere.
As far as coaching, don’t knock these guys because they are from the Blue Devil system, one of the most suceful youth organizations around. Either you love them or hate them, that’s how this goes; you know that.
There is no doubt that Starrs Mill is the king of the county when it comes to football, but we need to recognize that WHS is a program to be reckoned with in all sports, not only football. The graduating seniors will have an impact when they leave; your point is well taken. I honestly don’t see the same level of athleticism or commitment down the chute. We’ll just have wait on that one!
I’m still picking WHS over SC because of the home field advantage.

I would recommend calling Mr. Campbell at the county office for more information on the GHSA violations. The information came from the county office where he works. It was reported to my wife by a county office employee that he was not going to report the violations but later had to. You can also ask the athletic department at Whitewater - it would be a great chance to see how honest they intened to be with you. Whitewater, like all the Fayette schools, is a good school. Since my kids are Sandy Creek grads I follow the Pats. I always enjoy seeing a Fayette County school doing well in anything ....but especially football. I plan on being at the game and hope that both teams play hard and show well. I like the Cats - but I love tha Pats! ;-)Enjoy!!

I don't know if I'm as sure of Whitewater victory as you are. I'm more apted to go with the coin toss.

Sandy Creek is a tested regional team. Whitewater has talent but what happens when they finally meet someone that can shut them down? I think Sandy Creek can.

On UGA QB Stafford, you have to be careful not to ruin a young talent by throwing them into action when they aren't ready. It is important for the team to accept Stafford as a leader and I don't know if its there yet.

The world must be coming to an end. I agree with Brown on the Bulldogs needing to go with Stafford. Tereshinski has a little more experience but the new kid Stafford is a football machine.
