Local players kick off their 2006 season on college gridiron

The college football season has started and a number of former Fayette athletes represented themselves well on the football field.

• Sandy Creek graduates and current members of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Calvin Johnson and Andrew Gardner, played in possibly the biggest game over the weekend losing 14-10 to Notre Dame.

Johnson had seven catches for 11 yards and a touchdown and Gardner got a start at left tackle and made some key blocks in the game.

In other games:

• Deante Battle, a Starr’s Mill graduate, had one solo tackle, one assist and one pass break-up for Northwestern University in their 21-3 win over Miami-Ohio.

• Darrell Burston, a Starr’s Mill graduate, had one assisted tackle in Florida State’s 13-10 win over the University of Miami.

• Charles Castleberry, a McIntosh graduate at the University of Minnesota, Crookston, rushed for 15 yards against St. Cloud State. The Golden Eagles lost to St. Cloud State 71-0.

• John Deraney, a Starr’s Mill graduate, kicked three extra points and had four kickoffs for 260 yards for NC State in their 23-10 win over Appalachian State.

• Johnny Edwards, a Starr’s Mill graduate, got some playing time on defense in Wake Forest’s 20-10 win over Syracuse.

• Michael Gates, a Sandy Creek graduate, started at right guard for Mississippi State in their 15-0 loss to the University of South Carolina.

• Ryan Gloer, a Starr’s Mill graduate at Shorter College, got some playing time at linebacker in their 39-7 win over Brevard.

• Gerren Griffin, a Sandy Creek graduate, got some playing time in James Madison’s 14-3 win over Bloomsburg University.

• Josh Haney, a Sandy Creek graduate, got some playing time at wide receiver for The Citadel in their 35-3 loss to Texas A&M.

• Chris James, a Starr’s Mill graduate attending Western Kentucky University, kicked an extra point and a field goal in the Hilltopper’s 48-12 loss to the University of Georgia.

• Teddy Morris, a Sandy Creek graduate, got some playing time on the offensive line for Valdosta State University in their 20-16 win over Albany State.

• Alex Mortensen, a Landmark Christian School graduate, was two-for-three passing for a 14 yards and a touchdown for Samford in their 37-7 win over Miles.

• Hart Pearson, a Fayette County graduate, kicked six punts for a total of 221 yards for Charleston Southern in their 21-13 win over Presbyterian College.

• Andy Smith, a Starr’s Mill graduate, got some playing time on the offensive line for the University of Memphis in their 28-25 loss to Ole Miss.

• Riley Swanson, a Sandy Creek graduate, had one solo tackle and one assist for Wake Forest in their win over 20-10 Syracuse.

This list is not complete. Some local players are on teams that did not play last weekend and others are not known by this reporter.

We should all be proud of these young men. (Especially the Sandy Creek Guys - just kidding!) These fellows are getting an education and playing at a level very few ever get to play at! Good Job Men!!
