A Union City man was charged Aug. 24 with the murder of long time city resident Thelma Ransom.

David Bates, 53, was charged with murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, according to Union City Police Public Information Officer George Louth.

The 63 year-old Ransom was found in her home on Lower Dixie Lakes Road by a relative Aug. 22, Louth said. Bates was known to the victim though police have not established a motive at this time, Louth said.

Bates is being held in Fulton County Jail.

To set the record straight...

Thelma Ransom was 60 years old, not 63
She was found by her daughter on Aug. 21, not Aug 22
Bates had a knife, not a firearm

She lived in a duplex, Bates was her neighbor in the other side of the duplex and had lived there for almost a year.
